  • The specific antibody response of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus to different water temperature were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In the rearing temperature of $15^{\circ}C$, first anti-bovine serum albumin (BSA) antibody titer was appeared after 14 days of immunization, whereas 24~48 days post-immunization (PI) resulted maximum antibody titer in all 5 experimental fish with optical density (OD) values 1.94~3.04. At the end of the experiment (84 days), 0.03~1.28 OD values were observed. In the rearing temperature of $12{\sim}13^{\circ}C$, first antibody titer was found 28 days PI in 2 out of 5 fish. Three fish shown high OD titer (1.88~2.68) between 56 and 70 days and OD values of 0.49 to 2.35 were observed at 84 days. However, the anti-BSA antibodies of two fish showed less than 0.8 OD values until 84 days. In the rearing temperature of $10^{\circ}C$, specific antibody appeared at 56 days, maximum antibody titer was observed at 70 days in 2 out of 5 fish (OD values: 1.37~1.53) and 1.00 to 1.11 OD values were observed at 84 days. Rest 3 fish showed OD values of 0.12 to 0.68 much below to that of other 2 fish, throughout the experimental period. In conclusion, specific antibody response of olive flounder at high temperature was much faster, higher and longer than that at lower temperature.

  • This study was carried out in order to examine the germination characteristics of Atractylodes japonica seeds, and it was to develop the more efficient pre-treatment and production system of the seeds. Experiment was performed by two ways-temperature control (10, 15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$) and shading treatment (full sunlight, 35, 50, 75, 95% of full sunlight). Seed pre-treatment before the each experiment was carried out by temperature (with low temperature and wetting treatment (LTW) for 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days) and shading treatment (with drying at room temperature (DRT), drying at low temperature (DLT) and water soaking (WS) for 48 hours). Seeds of A. japonica were germinated well under temperature control (overall 85.3~100%), especially high temperature. And, the seeds pre-treated with LTW for 45 days germinated with a 100% success rate. Under the surveying shading treatment, the highest germination rate was 95.8% with DRT and overall 63.2~95.8%. Germination rate under seeds with WS was 63.2~7.8%. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, A. japonica seeds don't need to pre-treat cause of high germination, but if it is performed with LTW for a certain period of time, it would be more productive.

  • The phenological change of plants is an indication of local and regional climate change. An increase in temperature due to global warming is manifest in the change of phytophenological events. In this study, trends in the plant phenology and its correlation with air temperature in South Korea were examined using observational data for 18 phenological phases. The spring phenological phases, such as sprouting and flowering, occurred earlier (from 0.7 to 2.7 days per 10-year) during 1945 ${\sim}$2007. while the autumn phases, such as full autumn tinting, moved later (from 3.7 to 4.2 days per 10-year) during 1989 ${\sim}$2007. The correlation between the plant phenology in spring with the air temperature from February to March is relatively high. The warming in the early spring (February March) by $1^{\circ}C$. causes an advance in the spring plant phenology of 3.8 days. The plant phenology in autumn also correlates with the average temperature in October. The autumn plant phenology for a $1^{\circ}C$ increase in October temperature occurs about 3.1 days later.

  • This experiment was carried out to study the influence of temperature treatments on germination of sorghum (cv. Pioneer 931), sorghum-sudangrass (cv. Pioneer 988), sudangrass (cv. Piper) and corn (cv. Suweon 19) in growth chamber. Each crop seeds were germinated under different day/night temperature of 10/5, 15/10, 20/15, 25/20, 30/25, 35/30 and $40/35^{\circ}C$ over 14/10 hour days. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. Germination of sorghum and sorghum-sudangrass were less affected by high temperature than those of corn and sudangrass. The optimum temperatures for germination were $20-40^{\circ}C$ for sorghum and $20-30^{\circ}C$ for corn. High temperature($40/35^{\circ}C$), however, resulted in great decrease of seed germination rates of seed germination rates of corn, while those of sorghum and sorghum-sudangrass shown high germination rates with the value of 95.8% and 89.9%, respectively. 2. Sorghum-sudangrass hybrid was shown to have a great tolerance to low temperature. Under low temperature($10/5^{\circ}C$) seed germination of sorghum-sudangrass was 80.0% but those of corn and sudangrass were 43.2% and 24.8% respectively. Germination rates of sorghum were decreased to about 68.8% at low temperature from a value of 98.1% at optimum temperature. 3. The days required to the seed germination of sorghum and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid were shortened by increasing of temperature. Under different temperature treatments, it was required 12 days ($15/10^{\circ}C$), 6 days ($25/20^{\circ}C$) and 3 days ($40/35^{\circ}C$) in sorghum but corn required 16, 7 and 3 days, respectively.

  • Sodium hypochlorite, used as water disinfectant, is generated by electrolysis of salt. Compared to chlorine gas disinfection, it is free from high-pressure gas regulation and does not generate toxic gas, so it is increasingly used as a safe disinfectant. Despite these advantages, the concentration of sodium hypochlorite decreases with temperature during long-term storage, and the amount of chlorate increases when a large amount is added, it has mainly been applied to small-scale waterworks. To solve this problem, high sodium hypochlorite generation was developed. In this study, the changes of concentration and chlorate of sodium hypochlorite with time has been studied. As a result of the test, it was found that the usable period of sodium hypochlorite produced at a certain temperature or less was increased from 1.5 days to 13 days. Overall, sodium hypochlorite can be applied even in large-scale waterworks, which makes operation more stable and also reduces the disinfection byproducts, thus it contributed greatly to securing water quality.

  • The diurnal variations of $O_3$ and $NO_2$ in an urban park and the effects of air temperature and wind speed on the diurnal variations are investigated. $O_3$ and $NO_2$ concentrations were observed at a site in an urban park of Seoul from 27 July 2015 to 9 August 2015. The $O_3$ and $NO_2$ concentrations observed in the urban park are compared to those observed at the Gangnam air quality monitoring station (AQMS). The $O_3$ concentration is higher in the urban park than at the Gangnam AQMS in the daytime because the amount of $O_3$ dissociated by NO is smaller as well as partly because the amount of $O_3$ produced in the oxidation process of biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is larger in the urban park than at the Gangnam AQMS. The $NO_2$ concentration is lower in the urban park than at the Gangnam AQMS during day and night because the observation site in the urban park is relatively far from roads where $NO_x$ is freshly emitted from vehicles. The difference in $NO_2$ concentration is larger in the daytime than in the nighttime. To examine the effects of air temperature and wind speed on the diurnal variations of $O_3$ and $NO_2$, the observed $O_3$ and $NO_2$ concentrations are classified into high or low air temperature and high or low wind speed days. The high $O_3$ and $NO_2$ concentrations in the daytime appear for the high air temperature and low wind speed days. This is because the daytime photochemical processes are favorable when the air temperature is high and the wind speed is low. The scatter plots of the daytime maximum $O_3$ and minimum $NO_2$ concentrations versus the daytime averages of air temperature and wind speed show that the daytime maximum $O_3$ and minimum $NO_2$ concentrations tend to increase as the air temperature increases or the wind speed decreases. The daytime maximum $O_3$ concentration is more sensitive to the changes in air temperature and wind speed in the urban park than at the Gangnam AQMS.

  • Using 61 observation data of the recent 30 years from 1979 to 2008, we have identified the areas which had climatologically frequent occurrence of extraordinary low and high temperature leading to meteorological disasters. The station of the highest temperature deviation was Gangneungduring the period of April through July. Furthermore, the eastern coast region including Gangneung recorded the largest amplitude of temperature deviation in Korea, showing the climatological evidence that the temporal variation was the largest. During the period of April to October, most of the days with extraordinary high temperature were found in April. The regionswith more than 30days of extraordinary high temperature werethe eastern and western coast regions. Thus, special attention to prevent the meteorological disaster related to extraordinary high temperature is required in the coast regions particularly during April. Meanwhile, further attention to prevent the disaster related to extraordinary low temperature is required in Gangwon inland, Chungcheong inland, and the southern province especially in August.

  • The ionic conductivity of several simulated borosilicate glasses was measured in the temperature range 150-600℃ in air. Leaching experiments were also carried out using Soxhlet apparatus at 100 ℃ for 7 days. As Li+ ion increased in simulated borosilicate glasses, both the ionic conductivity and leaching rate increased. The activation energy in the ionic conduction of the simulated borosilicate glasses was 1.38-1.45 eV in the high temperature region and 0.93-1.1 eV in the low temperature region.

  • We investigated the optimum salinity and temperature conditions for the mass culture of small rotifer, Keratella sp.. In the salinity experiment ranging from 0-34‰, the population growth of Keratella sp. drastically increased continuously up to 15‰, and then slightly increased over 20‰. Their maximum density reached 1,007 inds./mL at 0‰. A pre-reproductive phase was shorter in low salinity than in high salinity. The highest number of offspring per female (10.2 inds.) and lifespan of the female (10.7 days) were obtained at 0‰, but there were no significant differences compared to those at 5‰. In the temperature experiments ranging from 16-$32^{\circ}C$, the highest maximum density (1,766 inds./mL) was shown at $24^{\circ}C$. The number of offspring per female significantly increased with increasing temperature, and the highest number of offspring per female was 10.4 inds. at $24^{\circ}C$. The lifespan of female increased with decreasing temperature and the longest lifespan was 12.8 days at $16^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, the characteristics of temperature history was evaluated for three hot wires with different capacity installed in slab concrete which are relatively thin. Results can be summarized as follows. First, for the case of material using 5W hot wire, all decreased to below zero at or around 24 hours. Similarly, the material using 20W hot wire decreased to 2℃ below zero at or around 80 hours but satisfied the accumulative temperature of 45° D·D at 7 days of material age. On the other hand, the case of 30W hot wire, the biggest capacity, showed the high temperature history of 5℃ in average at all areas except the corners. Thus, the target accumulative temperature was secured at or around the 3 days of material age. Considering the above, the initial damage by freezing can be prevented only if 20W or higher hot wires are used for the slabs at -10℃ of extremely low temperature environment.
