Precision positioning system with magnetostrictive actuator(MA) has widely used in manufacturing devices to control the positioning accuracy to meet the high load and stroke requirements. It has many advantage in comparison with piezoelectic actuator; high force, high strain, high efficient etc. But, the performance of Terfenol-D, the commercially available magnetostrictive material, is highly dependent on the prestress, magnetic field intensity and temperature. Therefore, thermal strain of magnetostrictive material obstructs precision position control of magnetostrictive actuator, magnetostrictive actuator is need of cooling system. In this paper, cooling system using compressed cold air is developed and proper temperature and velocity of compressed cold air is studied by thermal analysis according to applied current.

For the stabilization of laser output power and wavelength of the high power fiber laser, the cooling plate must be properly taken into account. In this study, three analyzing methods which are heat transfer theory, CFD and experiment are used to analyze cooling plate performance by measuring pump Laser Diode(LD) temperature. Under limited operating conditions of a cooling plate, the internal flow of cooling plate is transitional flow so that the internal flow is assumed to be laminar and turbulence flow and conducted theoretical calculation. Through CFD, temperature of pump LD and characteristics of the internal flow were analyzed. By the experiment, temperature of pump LD was measured in real conditions and the performance of the cooling plate was verified. The results of this study indicate that three analyzing methods are practically useful to design the cooling plate for the high power fiber laser or similar things.
Injection molding is a cyclic process comprising of cooling phase as the largest part of this cycle. Providing efficient cooling in lesser cycle times is of significant importance in the molding industry. Recently, lots of researches have been done for rapid cooling of a hot-spot area using CO2 in injection molding. The CO2 flows under high pressure through small, flexible capillary tubes to the point of use, where it expands to create a snow and gas mixture at a temperature of -79℃. The gaseous CO2 removes heat from the mold and releases it into the atmosphere. In this paper, a CO2 cooling module was applied to an injection mold in order to cool a large area cavity uniformly and quickly, and the cooling performance of the injection mold was investigated. The product was a high-curvature molded part with a molding area of 300x100mm. Heat cartridges were installed in a stationary mold, and CO2 cooling module was inserted inside a movable mold. Through structural analysis, it was confirmed that the maximum deformation of mold with CO2 cooling module was 0.09mm. A CO2 feed system with a heat exchanger was used for cooling experiments. The CO2 was injected into the holes on both sides of the supply pipe of the cooling module and discharged through hexagon blocks to cool the mold. It took 5.8 seconds to cool the mold from an average temperature of 140℃ to 70℃. Through the experiment using CO2 cooling module, it was found that a cooling rate of up to 12.98℃/s and an average of 10.18℃/s could be achieved.

The important problem in high speed spindle is to reduce and minimize the thermal effect by motor and bearing. This paper presents the thermal characteristic analysis for a high speed spindle with and without cooling at the rear part, considering the viscosity and the flow rate of cooling oil. A high speed spindle is composed of angular contact ceramic ball bearings, high speed built-in motor, oil jacket cooling and so on. The thermal analyses of high speed spindle need to minimize the thermal effect and maximize the cooling effect and they are carried out under the various cooling conditions. Heat generations of the bearing and the high speed motor are estimated from the theoretical and experimental data. This result can be applied to the design and manufacture of a high speed motor spindle.

We have developed a numerical model to analyze flow dynamics and heat transfer characteristics of the cooling water in a circular rotating magnetron cathode by a moving boundary grid method realized in a commercial multiphysics package, CFD-ACE+. The numerical model is composed of a target, dual mass rotating cathode and cooling water connections. When the inlet and outlet of the cooling water are offset by the same distance from the rotation axis, the temperature at the center is higher by $50^{\circ}C$ at maximum. At 5 mm away from the target surface, the temperature profile showed typical center high characteristic. At heat input of 30 kW, the maximum temperature change of the cooling water hits $6^{\circ}C$ within 0.5 sec under 60 rpm. With a cooling water configuration of center in/edge out, the temperature of the center region of the target gets lowered. Within 100 seconds of plasma operation time, the cooling water temperature keeps getting higher.

The combustion chamber and nozzle of a liquid rocket engine need thermal protection against the high temperature combustion gas. The nozzle extension of a high-altitude engine also has to be compatible with high temperature environment and several kinds of cooling methods including gas film cooling, ablative cooling and radiative cooling are used. Especially for an upper-stage nozzle extension having a large expansion ratio, the weight impact on the launcher performance is crucial and it necessitated the development of light-weight refractory material. The present survey on the nozzle extension materials employed in the liquid rocket engines of USA, Russia and European Union has revealed a trend that the heavier metals like stainless steels and titanium alloys are being substituted with light weight carbon fiber or ceramic matrix composite materials.
High strength steel is similar to carbon steel in its composition. This material is developed originally for special uses such as aerospace and automobile due to its high strength and shock-free property in spite of lightness. But the chemical attraction of high strength steel is serious, which includes comminution of formation, metalization and strengthening. Machining results in built-up edge between this material and the tool. Especially the work hardening behavior results in tool life shortening, which was caused by temperature generation during machining. In this study, cooling system was made in which liquid nitrogen is supplied to circulate in order to make up for these weaknesses. Machining of high strength steels, which is recognized as difficult to machine materials, was conducted after tool is cooled at -195$\circ$C. Experimental results showed that the tool was cooled down rapidly below -195$\circ$C in about 200 seconds. The tool temperature of machining with cooling system was lowered by 60~95$\circ$C than that of machining in room temperature. The hardness of the surface of chip is decreased by machining with cooling system. And the machining using the cooling system made it possible to increase shear angle, to retain smooth surface on chip without built-up-edge and to get a better roughness.
In this study, the performance of the simultaneous heating & cooling water making system using R134a was investigated by simulation. The most important effect upon heating COP was intermediate pressure depending on input water temperature. With the input water temperature of $10^{\circ}C\;and\;20^{\circ}C$, optimum intermediate pressure were 923 and 1040kPa, respectively. At that optimum intermediate pressure, the maximum heating COP of the system operated between $0^{\circ}C$ evaporating temperature and $70^{\circ}C$ condensing temperature were 4.15 and 3.83. With installation of the subcoolers in high or low pressure section, the system COP was increased by reducing the refrigerant mass flow rate. Under the optimum pressure and $10^{\circ}C$ input water temperature, it was found that heating COP was maximized when the low-subcooler and high-subcooler capacity rate were taken by 14% and 13%, respectively.
Heat stress results in fatigue, a decline in strength, alertness., and mental capacity. The problem is compounded when high humidity exists. To help relieve worker heat stress, many types of cooling units are marketed. While workers may experience some cooling, critical body core temperatures often continue to elevate. This study was designed to find the effects of three kinds of cooling vest with portable frozen gel strips on thermophysiological parameters and on temperature and humidity within clothing. The heart rate, rectal, and skin temperature as well as sweat rate and clothing microclimate were measured during 80 min in 5 healthy males. Inquiries were also made into the subjective rating thermal, humidity comfort, and fatigue sensations. The main findings in our experiments are as follows: (a) Physiological parameters such as rectal temperature was the lowest in garb A1, intermediate in garb A, and the highest in garb A2 throughout the experiment. And mean skin temperature was the lowest in garb A, intermediate in garb A1, and the highest in garb A2; (b) Temperature and humidity within clothing (back) were garb in Al, intermediate in garb A, and the highest in garb A2. But the temperature and humidity within clothing (chest) were garb in A, intermediate in garb A1, and the highest in garb A2; (c) Most participants (4 out of 5 persons) answered that they felt more comfortable and fatigueless in garb A1 than in garb A and A2. It is concluded that local cooling in garb A1 of the upper torso could physiological reduce the thermal strain in participants wearing cooling vest.

Since the structural temperature of a flight vehicle flying at high speed rises rapidly due to aerodynamic heating, it is necessary for optimum structural design to obtain proper material properties at high temperature by taking into account of its operational environment. For a special alloy, analysis data on strength change due to exposure time to high temperature are very limited, and most of them are for an exposure time longer than 30 minutes for long term operations. In this study, base and weld metal samples of Ti-6Al-4V alloy had been prepared and high temperature tensile tests with induction heating were performed, and then high temperature strength characteristics and strength recovery characteristics through cooling have been analyzed. Pre-tests to determine maximum heating rate were performed, and response characteristics for temperature control were confirmed. As a result, high temperature tensile strength appeared to be lower than that of room temperature, but it was higher than that of high temperature of 30 minite exposure listed in MMPDS. In strength recovery through cooling Ti-6Al-4V alloy has shown higher recovery rate compared with other alloys.
