The first flush phenomenon is defined as the initial period of road runoff during which the concentration of pollutants was significantly high. Road runoff contains significant loads of micro-particles, heavy metals and organic constituents. There were two major objectives of this study. The first objective was to characterize the road runoff. The second objective was to measure and evaluate particle sire distribution of the road runoff, Stormwater runoff was monitored on two sites of four lane road areas along with traffic volume. A total six storm events were monitored to characterize the road runoff. The quantity of road runoff and quality constituents, including chemical oxygen demand ($COD_{Cr}$), suspended solids(SS), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), ortho-phosphorus ($PO_4-P$), total phosphorus(TP), heavy metals and particle size distribution were analyzed. The results indicate that the concentration of SS, $COD_{Cr}$, TKN and TP ranges were $45{\sim}2,396\;mg/L$, $40{\sim}931\;mg/L$, $0.1{\sim}19.6\;mg/L$, and $0.2{\sim}25.1\;mg/L$, respectively. The results of the regression analysis between SS and the others constituents shows that $COD_{Cr}$, TP, Cu, Pb were highly correlated. And the results showed that the mean range of particle size and uniformity coefficient for road runoff were $6.7{\sim}23.4{\mu}$ and $6.4{\sim}10.2$, respectively.
Distillation condensate generated from downstream processing of microbial alcohol fermentation imposes a serious burden to biological wastewater treatment or anaerobic digestion due to its high contents of SS (suspended solids) and TN (total nitrogen), A pilot scale microfiltration of the stillage condensate with a stainless steel SCEPTER membrane of 0.1 ${\mu}$m pore size was carried out to remove SS which was mostly composed of microbial cell residue. A stable permeate flux was achieved when the decanter effluent containing 0.7% of SS was filtered under the conditions of X10 VCR (volume concentration ratio), 2.5 bar of TMP (transmembrane pressure), and 60$^{\circ}C$. When stillage condensate with 2.6% SS was treated directly with microfiltration, VCR below X3 was recommended for a long duration of filtration. The permeate and retentate obtained from microfiltration were recycled to make-up medium of fermentation. Adding permeate or retentate up to 30% of fermentation volume showed no distinguished undesirable influence during the course of alcohol fermentation. Although only slight improvements in the final amount of CO$_2$ evolution and alcohol content were observed, fermentation rate increased so that the required time to reach 450 L/ton of CO$_2$ evolution was shortened to 72% of that with normal media.
Fresh cut vegetables provide convenience and rapidity to consumers. However, they have a weakness with respect to their short shelf-life due to browning and quality degradation via increased respiration. To overcome this problem, the effect of packaging film on the short-term storage of cut kimchi cabbages was investigated. Polypropylene (PP), oriented polypropylene (OPP), and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films were used as packaging film, and cut kimchi cabbages were stored in the packaging films at $5^{\circ}C$ for 4 weeks. PP film packaging showed the least weight loss and soluble solids loss after 4 weeks. Titratable acidity increased during storage for all samples, however, the increase rate of titratable acidity in PP and OPP film packaging decreased, which was lower than that of LDPE film packaging. Color values decreased over time during storage. In appearance, PP film packaging was better than other films due to their high transparency. In a sensory test, there was no statistical difference among samples. Taken together, the transparent PP film packaging was more effective for short-term storage of cut kimchi cabbages. Thus, this study provides useful information for the selection of packaging materials for cut kimchi cabbage marketing.
Persimmon contains high levels of vitamins and phenolic compounds, as well as soluble solids, necessary for the fermentation of persimmon wine. Co-fermentation of persimmon wine was carried out using a mixed culture of Pichia anomala JK04, a Korean indigenous yeast that improves wine quality and flavor, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae Fermivin, an industrial wine yeast, in the following ratios: 9:1 (v/v), 5:5 (v/v), 1:9 (v/v) and 0:10 (v/v). During fermentation, the alcohol contents increased more slowly in samples of mixed culture than in samples of the single culture of S. cerevisiae Fermivin. The alcohol contents of all samples reached 12~13% (v/v) after 15 days. All samples of the mixed culture showed greater variety in flavor and taste than S. cerevisiae Fermivin only. In the sensory evaluation, mixed culture samples had higher scores in terms of flavor and overall preference than the single culture samples. Therefore, P. anomala JK04 is thought to improve the wine flavor of Korean domestic persimmon wine.
Long-term storage technology was developed to extend shelf-life of citron (Citrus junos). Changes in quality characteristics of blanched and frozen citron peels (type A, without blanching for control; type B, blanched at $95^{\circ}C$ for 2 min; type C, blanched at $95^{\circ}C$ for 2 min, sugar added; type D, blanched at $95^{\circ}C$ for 5 min) during frozen storage were evaluated. Citron jam was prepared using frozen citron sample B, which showed the highest quality characteristics during storage, and high quality characteristics, such as yield and overall acceptability, were obtained when using 40% frozen citron, 41% sugar, 18.56% glutinous starch syrup, 0.39% pectin, and 0.05% citric acid. During storage of both blanched and frozen citron peels and citron jam made of frozen citron peel, changes in characteristics such as pH, total acids, soluble solids, and browning, were lower than those of control. Sensory evaluation for sourness, sweetness, and overall acceptability of citron jam made with frozen citron peel during storage showed higher values than those of control.
Effects of different processes or texture of cucumber pickles fermented in 7% NaCl solution were studied. Cucumbers were treated with different processes: control; preheating in 7% NaCl, 0.04M $CaCl_2$ solution ($60^{\circ}C$, 1hr); combination of preheating and post microwave heating (5 min, midium high level, 2450 Mhz); preheating in the solution which was adjusted to pH 8.5. In each process the pH and total acidity of brine solution, total pectin contents in alcohol insoluble solids (AIS), hot water soluble pectin (HWSP) contents and firmness of cucumber pickles were determined at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 25 days of storage periods. Total pectin contents and the firmness of pickles were decreased during 25 days of storage. Control group showed the lowest value and post microwave heating group marked the highest value in total pectin contents and firmness retention of cucumber pickles. The results of this study indicated that total pectin content seems to correlate with the firmness of cucumber pickles. However, HWSP content did not show any correlation with firmness of cucumber pickles. Post microwave heating method could be used to retain firmness of fermented cucumber pickles.
The experiment has investigated the effects of growth, yield, fruit quality and cation absorption of strawberry 'Akihime' in different $NO_3-N:NH_4-N$ ratio in nutrient solution. $NO_3-N:NH_4-N$ ratios were 5.5:0, 4.0:1.5 and $3.0:2.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}$. As the ratio of $NH_4-N$ increased, pH was decreased by $5.0{\sim}6.0$ and EC sustained $0.8{\sim}1.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ during experiment. Though in high $NH_4-N$ ratio of $3.0:2.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}$, the absorption of cations(K, Ca and Mg) was not inhibited. Treatment in contained $NH_4-N$ showed a tendency of increasing of petiole length and leaf width. The fruit length, fruit width, fruit weight and soluble solids were not significantly different. Yield per plant was lowest in $4.0:1.5\;me{\cdot}L^{-1}$, of $NO_3-N:NH_4-N$ ratio. Malformation fruit has not shown during the whole growth period.

A simple in-situ methane enrichment system in mesophilic anaerobic digestion was developed to take advantage of the differing solubilities of $CO_2$ and methane. The methane enhancement systems consisted of low solids plug-flow maize digester coupled with a leachate recycle loop to an external $CO_2$ stripper. The effects of leachate recycle rate (LRR) and reactor alkalinity on the resulting offgas $CH_4$ contents, biogas productivity and TVS removal efficiency were quantitively evaluated. The results showed that offgas $CH_4$ contents of over 94% was achieved at 3 volume of leachate recycle per volume of reactor per day (3 v/v-d) and at the reactor alkalinity of 4 g/L as $CaCO_3$, as the optimum operating conditions. The TVS removal efficiency of the methane enhancement system was 79% which corresponds to 94% of the control reactor and the methane productivity appeared to be 0.71 v/v-d. Offgas methane contents correlated well with LRR. However excessively high LRR led to the decrease in TVS removal efficiency.

Retardation effect of heavy metals in soils caused by adsorption onto the surfaces of solids particles is well known phenomena. The adsorption of metal ions has been recognized more strong in clay mineral and organic matter contents rather than sands and gravels. In this study, we investigated the retardation effect in two sandy soils by conducting batch and column tests. The column tests were conducted to obtain the relationship between concentration and time known as breakthrough curve (BTC). We applied pulse type injection of ZnCl$_2$solution on the inlet boundary and monitored the effluent concentration at the exit boundary under steady state condition using EC-meter and ICP-AES. Batch test consisted of an equilibrium procedure for fine fractions collected from two sandy soils for various initial ZnCl$_2$concentrations, and analysis of Zn ions in equilibrated solution using ICP-AES. The results of column test showed that i) the peak concentration of Zn analyzed by ICP was far less than that detected by EC-meter for both soils and ii) travel times for peak concentration were more less identical for two different monitoring techniques. The first result can be explained by ion exchange between Zn and other cations initially present in the soil particles since ICP analysis showed a significant amount of Ca, Mg ions in the effluent. From the second result, we found that retardation effect was not present in these soils due to strong cation exchange capacity of Zn ion over other cations since we did not apply a solution containing more adsorptive cations such as Al. The result of batch test also showed high distribution coefficients (K$_{d}$) for two soils supporting the dominant ion exchange phenomena. Based on the retardation factor obtained from the Kd, we predicted the BTC using CDE model and compared with the BTC of Zn concentration obtained from ICP The predicted BTC, however, disagreed with the monitored in terms of travel time and magnitude of the peak concentrations. The only way to describe the prominent decrease of Zn ion was to introduce decay or sink coefficient in the CDE model to account for irreversible decrease of Zn ions in liquid phase.e.

The study was conducted on the effects of time of defoliation on fruit quality of pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) trees, managing with low-pesticides, and regrowth of stem cuttings in vitro. Treatments included for 40% of uniform defoliation at early-August, end-August, and early-September, as well as control (no defoliation). Defoliation at early-September and control increased growth of water sprouts as well as concentrations of carbohydrates, total nitrogen, and free sugar in one-year old shoots. Defoliation at early-September and control increased fruit yield and mean fruit weight, with high soluble solids content and fruit surface color of $a^*$ observed for both defoliation at end-August and early-September. Defoliation at early-August increased rates of electrolyte leakage in stem cuttings at $-18^{\circ}C$ in vitro. There were no significantly different for germination rates of the cuttings between the treatments at -18 and $-21^{\circ}C$ in vitro, with the highest germination of the cuttings observed for defoliation at early-September and control at $-27^{\circ}C$. Therefore, orchard management should be performed to be minimized for defoliation of the spur leaves until end-August, causing from precipitation and pests.
