  • Sentinel-2A satellite imagery provides VNIR (Visible Near InfraRed) and SWIR (ShortWave InfraRed) wavelength bands, and it is known to be effective for land cover classification, cloud detection, and environmental monitoring. Greenhouse is one of the middle classification classes for land cover map provided by the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Korea. Since greenhouse is a class that has a lot of changes due to natural disasters such as storm and flood damage, there is a limit to updating the greenhouse at a rapid cycle in the land cover map. In the present study, we utilized Sentinel-2A satellite images that provide both VNIR and SWIR bands for the detection of greenhouse. To utilize Sentinel-2A satellite images for the detection of greenhouse, we produced high-resolution SWIR bands applying to the fusion technique performed in two stages and carried out the detection of greenhouse using SVM (Support Vector Machine) supervised classification technique. In order to analyze the applicability of SWIR bands to greenhouse detection, comparative evaluation was performed using the detection results applying only VNIR bands. As a results of quantitative and qualitative evaluation, the result of detection by additionally applying SWIR bands was found to be superior to the result of applying only VNIR bands.

  • The dissemination of commercial satellite images. which have the high spatial resolution such as aerial photos, are the active trend in remote sensing community because of the recent development in satellite and sensor technology. Such high resolution satellite images provide a unique tool for the monitoring of ongoing urban land use change. Especially KOMPSAT-1, which was launched at December 1999 and successfully operated up to now, provides repeatedly panchromatic images over Korean peninsula, which has the spatial resolution of 6.6m. Based upon this KOMPSAT-1 EOC image data we can try to analyze and assess the temporal urban land use change, which could not be done because lack of such data. The aim of this paper is to analyze and assess the spatial land use characteristics of Daejeon Metropolitan City based on KOMPSAT-1 EOC data. The land use map of year 2001 is generated through the modification of the year 2000 land use map, which is published by National Geographic Information Institute, using visual interpretation of KOMPSAT-1 EOC image which is acquired in year 2001. This study can be the start point of the time series analysis of the long term land use change monitoring mit KOMPSAT-1 EOC data.

  • In this paper, we introduce an algorithm for the ortho-rectification of high resolution pushbroom-type satellite images. The generation of ortho-images in the ultimate level of the satellite image preprocessing which also includes systematic geocoding and precision geocoding. It is also essential for the mapping of satellite images because topotraphic maps are based on the orthographic projection. The newly developed ortho-image generation algorithm introduced in this paper is on the line of the algorithms previously developed (Shin and Lee, 1997; Shin e 1998). Various experimental results are shown in this paper. The results show that the algorithm completely eliminates the disparities in the perspectively viewed images which were caused by the terrain height. The absolute accuracy of the developed algorithm depends on the accuracy of the camera model and the digital elevation model used.

  • The Korea Aerospace Research Institute has developed a 6U HiREV Nano-satellite for the observation of the earth using high resolution videos and images. Since the 6U Nano-satellite is bulky compared to the 1U/3U Nano-satellite, the first natural frequency is relatively low. Large equivalent stress and total deformation, due to structural load, can be generated. In this paper, the design of the 6U HiREV Nano-satellite is described and structure analysis, such as acceleration load analysis, modal analysis, and random vibration analysis are carried out. It is proven that the structural design of the 6U HiREV is stable. These results will be useful as reference materials for the development of additional 6U Nano-satellites, which will be applied to various future missions in KOREA.

  • Supplying high-resolution satellite image, we take much interest in the update and the revision of digital map and thematic map based on the satellite image. This study presented the possibility of the update and the revision to the existing digital map on a scale of l/5,000 and 1/25,000 to take advantage of the IKONOS satellite image. We performed geometric correction to make use of the ground control points of the existing digital map in IKONOS mono-image and created ortho-image by extracting digital elevation model from three dimensional contour data and altitude on the existing digital map. We revised changed features in the method of screen digitizing by overlapping orthorectified satellite image and existing digital map and flawed features of the unchanged area on the satellite images for positional accuracy analysis. As a result, rectification error is calculated at $\pm$3.35m by RMSE. There is a good possibility of update of digital map under the scale of 1/10,000. It is possible to the update of the large scale digital map over the scale of l/5,000, as if we used the method of stereo image and ground control point surveying.

  • While utilizing high resolution satellite image for land use classification has been popularized, object-oriented classification has been adapted as an affordable classification method rather than conventional statistical classification. The aim of this study is to extract the paddy field area using object-oriented classification with time series NDVI from high-resolution satellite images, and the RapidEye satellite images of Jaeryung-gun in North Korea were used. For the implementation of object-oriented classification, creating objects by setting of scale and color factors was conducted, then 3 different land use categories including paddy field, forest and water bodies were extracted from the objects applying the variation of time-series NDVI. The unclassified objects which were not involved into the previous extraction classified into 6 categories using unsupervised classification by clustering analysis. Finally, the unsuitable paddy field area were assorted from the topographic factors such as elevation and slope. As the results, about 33.6 % of the total area (32313.1 ha) were classified to the paddy field (10847.9 ha) and 851.0 ha was classified to the unsuitable paddy field based on the topographic factors. The user accuracy of paddy field classification was calculated to 83.3 %, and among those, about 60.0 % of total paddy fields were classified from the time-series NDVI before the unsupervised classification. Other land covers were classified as to upland(5255.2 ha), forest (10961.0 ha), residential area and bare land (3309.6 ha), and lake and river (1784.4 ha) from this object-oriented classification.

  • Extraction of man-made objects from high resolution satellite images has been studied by many researchers. In order to reconstruct accurate 3D building structures most of previous approaches assumed 3D information obtained by stereo analysis. For this, they need the process of sensor modeling, etc. We argue that a single image itself contains many clues of 3D information. The algorithm we propose projects virtual shadow on the image. When the shadow matches against the actual shadow, the height of a building can be determined. If the height of a building is determined, the algorithm draws vertical lines of sides of the building onto the building in the image. Then the roof boundary moves along vertical lines and the footprint of the building is extracted. The algorithm proposed can use the shadow cast onto the ground surface and onto facades of another building. This study compared the building heights determined by the algorithm proposed and those calculated by stereo analysis. As the results of verification, root mean square errors of building heights were about 1.5m.

  • We investigated the accuracy in three dimensional geo-positioning derived by four high resolution satellite images acquired by two different sensors using the vendor-provided rational polynomial coefficients(RPC) based block adjustment in this research. We used two in-track stereo pairs of GeoEye-1 and WorldView-2 satellite and DGPS surveying data. In this experiment, we analyzed accuracies of RPC block adjustment models of two kinds of homogeneous stereo pairs, four kinds of heterogeneous stereo pairs, three 3 triplet image pairs, and one quadruplet image pair separately. The result shows that the accuracies of the models are nearly same. The accuracy without any GCPs reaches about CEP(90) 2.3m and LEP(90) 2.5m and the accuracy with single GCP is about CEP(90) 0.3m and LEP(90) 0.5m.

  • KOMPSAT-2 is the seventh high-resolution image satellite in the world that provides both 1m-grade panchromatic images of the GSD and 4m-grade multispectral images of the GSD. It's anticipated to be used across many different areas including mapping, territory monitoring and environmental watch. However, due to the complexity and security concern involved with the use of the MSC, the use of KOMPSAT-2 images are limited in terms of geometric images, such as satellite orbits and detailed mapping information. Therefore, this study aims to produce DEM and orthoimage by using the stereo images of KOMPSAT-2, and to explore the applicability of geo-spatial information with KOMPSAT -2. Orientation interpretations were essential for the production of DEM and orthoimage using KOMPSAT-2 images. In the study, they are performed by utilizing both RPC and GCP. In this study, the orientation interpretations are followed by the generation of DEM and orthoimage, and the analysis of their accuracy based on a 1:5,000 digital map. The accuracy analysis of DEM is performed and the results indicate that their altitudes are, in general, higher than those obtained from the digital map. The altitude discrepancies on plains, hills and mountains are calculated as 1.8m, 7.2m, and 11.9m, respectively. In this study, the mean differences between horizontal position between the orthoimage data and the digital map data are found to be ${\pm}3.081m$, which is in the range of ${\pm}3.5m$, within the permitted limit of a 1:5,000 digital map. KOMPSAT-2 images are used to produce DEM and orthoimage in this research. The results suggest that DEM can be adequately used to produce digital maps under 1:5,000 scale.

  • Both Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing fields have been nearly neglected or ignored by historical geographers. This paper intends to show the potentiality of satellite images of various spatial reslutions to explore and to express themes of historical geography. Old Chinese maps and atlas were also used to relate the digital values and historical facfors. Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer data might be used as a real image for a contintal scale to show changes in coastal shoreline. Landsat Thematic Mapper Imagery of Beijing showed some of boundaries of old palace. Finally IKONOS images of one meter resolution showed detailed information of landcover and landuse of the City, Beijing. The potential capability and limitation to apply satellite imagery in application of historical geography are also discussed.
