Stability of High Internal Phase Emulsions

  • We have studied the stability of W/O high internal phase emulsions(HIPE) containing water, cetyl dimethicone copolyol and oils varying magnesium sulfate in the range 0 to 0.5 wt% and oil polarities, respectively. The rheological consistency was mainly destroyed by the coalescence of the deformed water droplets. The greater the increase of complex modulus was, the less coalescence occurred and the more consistent the concentrated emulsions were. The increasing pattern of complex modulus versus volume fraction has been explained with the resistance to coalescence of the deformed interfacial film of water droplets in concentrated W/O emulsion. The stability is dependent on: (i) the choice of the oil is important, the requirements coincide with the requirements for the formation of the rigid liquid crystalline phases; and (ii) addition of salts the aqueous phase opposes the instability due to coalescence. Increasing the salt concentration increases the refractive index of the aqueous phase. It lowers the difference in the refractive index between the oil and aqueous phases. This decreases the attraction between the water domains, thus increasing the stability.

Solid Immersion Lens Microscope for Spectroscopy of Nanostructure Materials

  • We demonstrate a high-spatial-resolution imaging and spectroscopy tool using a solid immersion lens (SIL), a hemispherical lens made of high refractive index glass (n ~2). Photoluminescence (PL) images of single CdSe nanocrystals confirm a numerical aperture enhancement factor of ~2, close to the refractive index of the SIL. In particular, a bare-eye observation of PL signals emitted by single nanocrystals with ${\sim}10\;{\mu}m^{-2}$ densities was possible over an ${\sim}30\;{\mu}m$ diameter region. In addition, the PL spectra of single CdSe nanocrystals were successfully measured at room temperature. Thus, this SIL microscope ensures a simple but powerful method for nanostructure spectroscopy.

Synthesis and Physical Properties of Ophthalmic Copolymer Containing 4-fluorostyrene (4-Fluorostyrene을 포함하는 안의료용 고분자 합성 및 물리적 특성)

  • This study used 4-fluorostyrene with the cross-linker EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and the initiator AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) for copolymerization. Measurement of the physical properties of the copolymerized polymer showed that the water content was 19.98 ~ 31.08%, refractive index 1.443 ~ 1.475, visible transmittance 87 ~ 93% and tensile strength 0.246 ~ 0.311 kgf while the contact angle showed a distribution between $54.14^{\circ}$ and $66.95^{\circ}$. Therefore, the ophthalmic material produced using 4-fluorostyrene satisfied the basic physical properties required for contact lenses and also showed an increase in wettability and refractive index while having no significant change in water content with relation to styrene. Based on the results of this study, the produced copolymer is suitable for use as a material to high refractive index and wettability contact lenses.

Resonant Wireless Power Transfer System with High Efficiency using Metamaterial Cover (메타구조 기반의 고효율 공진형 무선전력전송 시스템)

  • In this paper, unit cell and arrayed cover for improving the transfer efficiency of resonant wireless power transfer system is proposed. We used the characteristic of zero refractive index for focusing a magnetic field between the transmitting resonator and receiving resonator. For zero refractive index, we designed the unit cell structure that have a negative value of effective permeability. The size of proposed unit cell based on metamaterial structure is $70mm{\times}70mm{\times}3.2mm$, operating frequency is 13.56 MHz. And, the size of arrayed cover is $400mm{\times}400mm{\times}3.2mm$, is consists of 2-layers. The transfer efficiency of the proposed wireless power transfer system are 94.8 %, 93.2 %, 91.4 %, 90.8 % at 100 mm, 200 mm, 300 mm and 400 mm (distance between transmitting and receiving resonator), respectively. And proposed WPT system has a transfer efficiency high than 90 % over the overall distances.

Optical-waveguide Phase Modulators Based on High-refractive-index Fluorinated Polyimide (고굴절률 불화폴리이미드를 이용한 광도파로 위상변조기 제작 및 특성 분석)

  • Fluorinated polyimide has excellent light transmittance and a high optical refractive index, and is useful for producing optical-waveguide phase modulators with low optical loss and low electric power consumption. In this work, an optical-waveguide phase modulator is designed and fabricated based on a high-refractive-index fluorinated polyimide, and its characteristics are measured. An efficient protocol for characterizing the loss components of the optical waveguide is proposed, and the propagation loss of the fabricated polyimide optical waveguide is confirmed to be 0.9 dB/cm. The phase modulator requires 9.1 mW of power for phase change of π, and the response time is 290 μs, which is improved by tenfold compared to a previous demonstration of polymeric phase modulators.

Optimal Mixtures of Roadway Pavement Marking Beads Under Various Weather Conditions (기상조건 변화에 따른 노면표시 비드의 최적 배합비율 산정)

  • Lane markings such as edgelines, centerlines, and lines that delineate lanes generally provide drivers with the various information for safe driving. Drivers can easily recognize the lane markings through the color differences between the markings and road surfaces during the daytime. However, it is a bit difficult for drivers to perceive them during the nighttime due to the lack of artificial lights. Although the glass beads with the 1.5-refractive index have been used to improve the visibility of the lane markings during the nighttime, it is still difficult for drivers to recognize the lane markings properly, especially during the rainy nighttime, which may often lead to traffic accidents. To improve the retroreflectivity and visibility of the lane markings during the rainy nighttime, the high refractive beads with the 2.4-refractive index are essentially required, but they do not work appropriately during the dry nighttime. Thus, the mixed materials with the 1.5, 1.9, and 2.4-refractive beads should be considered for the satisfactory implementation of the lane markings. This study reveals the best mixing rates of the beads by conducting benefit-cost analysis under various weather conditions in Korea. The analysis results show that the lane markings with the 100% of the 2.4-refractive beads provide the highest visibility of lane markings regardless of the roadway conditions, but the benefit-cost (B/C) ratio of the bead mixture is merely 0.46. The best mixing rate of the beads, from the highest B/C ratio viewpoint, was identified as the mixture with a 80% of 1.5-refractive beads and a 20% of 2.4-refractive beads. Some limitations and future research agenda have also been discussed.

Measurement of Refractive Index of Liquids by the Maximum and Minimum Deviated Laser Beam (레이저광의 최대.최소 편향법을 이용한 액체의 굴절률 측정)

  • The prism spectrometer is a standard device for the measurement of refractive index; it is used in undergraduate laboratories. Typically, however, lots of attention is required in the alignment, and the accuracy of the obtained refractive index is not so high in spite of the durability of the device. The maximum and minimum deviation method, which compensates the disadvantages of the prism spectrometer, can be composed cost effectively using a length marking tape and a rotating platform. It can measure the refractive indices accurately by utilizing a wide screen. In this study, the equal sided hollow prism whose length is 26 mm was fabricated and measured the refractive indices of seven kind of liquids (pure water, $C_3H_5(OH)_2$, $CCl_4$, $C_6H_4NH_2$, $CS_2$, $C_6H_4(CH_3)_2)$ by using the prism spectrometer and maximum and minimum deviated laser beam method at the wavelengths of He-Ne laser (${\lambda}$= 632.8 nm) and YVO4 laser (${\lambda}$= 532 nm). The result shows that the data obtained by the latter method are more accurate and precise than those obtained by the former device.

Preparation of High-Transmittance Glass Thin Films by the Sol-Gel Process (졸-겔법을 이용한 고투과율 유리 박막의 제조)

  • To prepare high-transmittance films, thin films were fabricated on the microscope slide glasses with silicon alkoxides and boric acids as starting materials by using a dip-coating technique. Thicknesses of the thin films were controled as viscosity of the sol used and composition of the $B_2O_3$ was changed at 5, 10, 15 and 20 mol%. Transmittance at visible range and IR transmittance of the films according to the composition were measured, and refractive index of the films were analyzed also. Maximum transmittance at visible range and minimum refractive index were obtained at 15 mol% $B_2O_3$. We will discuss a decrease of the transmittance at 20 mol% on the basis of the refractive index.

Preparations of z-cut LiNbO$_3$ Optical Waveguide for High Refractive Index Change and Properties of Insertion Loss as a Function of Ti Thickness (高 굴절율화된 z-cut LiNbO$_3$ 광도파로 제작 및 Ti 두께에 따른 삽입손실특성)

  • In this paper, we proposed a diffuion model of Ti diffused lithium niobate optical waveguide for fabricating waveguides with high refractive index and compared with conventional one. The achivement of low optical insertion loss between waveguide interface and single mode fibers was discussed as a function of Ti thickness for $\lambda$=1.55$\mu\textrm{m}$ The proposed diffusion method exhibited higher refractive index waveguide than conventional one for $\lambda$=0.6328$\mu\textrm{m}$ We have achieved the total fiber-waveguide-fiber insertion loss as low as 0.5dB/cm in z-cut and 1$\pm$0.5dB/cm in x-cut for both TM and TE mode of Mach-Zehnder interferometric waveguide in the range of Ti thickness 1000-1400$\AA$ for $\lambda$=1.55$\mu\textrm{m}$ From these results, this diffusion model for making a low loss waveguide can be used for low-power-modulators and switches.
