  • Computational simulation has been conducted to analyze the oil separation performance of gasoline engine oil separators. Two models are compared to select a proper oil separator for the engine. To analyze oil separation characteristics, d50 and separation efficiency have been calculated for each separator. As a result, model A shows excellent d50 and separation efficiency, and model B shows good pressure-drop characteristics. Model B is recommended for the general gasoline engine with low crank-case pressure and low oil consumption. Model A is recommended for the engine with high crank-case pressure and high oil consumption, especially equipped with special exhaust gas treatment system, that is critical to the oil contamination.

  • A turbo fan engine performance analysis program combined with a particle swarm optimization(PSO) has been developed to optimize the major design parameters of the combat aircraft gas turbine engine. The optimized parameters includes bypass ratio, fan pressure ratio, high pressure compression ratio and burner exit temperature. The objective parameters have been determined using a multi-objective function consisting of the net thrust and specific fuel consumption along a weight function. The basic model for the combat aircraft gas turbine engine has been selected as the F404 turbofan engine which is widely used in the combat aircraft, F-18 and Korean high level training aircraft, T-50. The optimal conditions of four parameters have been obtained for various design conditions.

  • The worldwide focus on reducing the emissions, fuel and lubricant consumption in T-GDI engines is leading engineers to consider the crankcase ventilation and oil mist separation system as an important means of control. In today's passenger cars, the oil mist separation systems mainly use the inertia effect (e.g. labyrinth, cyclone etc.). Therefore, this study has investigated high efficiency cylinder head-integrated oil-mist separator by using a compact multi-impactor type oil mist separator system to ensure adequate oil mist separation performance. For this purpose, engine dynamometer testing with oil particle efficiency measurement equipment and 3D two-phase flow simulation have been performed for various engine operating conditions. Tests with an actual engine on a dynamometer showed oil aerosol particle size distributions varied depending on operating conditions. For instance, high rpm and load increases bot only blow-by gases but the amount of small size oil droplets. Submicron-sized particles (less than 0.5 ㎛) were also observed. It is also found that the impactor type separator is able to separate nearly no droplets of diameter lower than 3 ㎛. CFD results showed that the complex aerodynamics processes that lead to strong impingement and break-up can strip out large droplets and generate more small size droplets.

  • The requirement of high efficiency and low emission for marine diesel engines are being enforced because of air pollution and climate change on the earth. In connection with these, many new technologies are considered. But they are mainly for new building ship. It is necessary to be concerned about the improvement of engine performance for existing ship. In this paper, the simulation program for performance of marine two-stroke diesel engine was developed to predict the deteriorating performance according to elapsed time for existing ship. The result was compared with the result of the program named TOP-CODE which was used by engine maker and checked to be shown good agreement between them.

  • In this paper, we have implemented the performance evaluation system of the unified fuel heater for CRDI diesel engine. If the diesel engine be cold by low temperature in winter, then that makes the waxing materials like a paraffin and is the source of poor engine starting. The unified fuel heater is the barrow meter that estimate the start performance of diesel engine, and be tested by test chamber. The chamber perform the normal temperature, an extremely low temperature, an operating performance in an extremely high temperature, the resistance operation delay time and current operation delay time in setting up test resistance, the bimetal delay time test in temperature variation, the current and resistor test of the composited heater, a heating operation test.

  • In this paper, we propose the structure of a high-performance face-detection engine that responds well to facial rotating changes using rotation transformation which minimize the required memory usage compared to the previous face-detection engine. The validity of the proposed structure has been verified through the implementation of FPGA. For high performance face detection, the MCT (Modified Census Transform) method, which is robust against lighting change, was used. The Adaboost learning algorithm was used for creating optimized learning data. And the rotation transformation method was added to maintain effectiveness against face rotating changes. The proposed hardware structure was composed of Color Space Converter, Noise Filter, Memory Controller Interface, Image Rotator, Image Scaler, MCT(Modified Census Transform), Candidate Detector / Confidence Mapper, Position Resizer, Data Grouper, Overlay Processor / Color Overlay Processor. The face detection engine was tested using a Virtex5 LX330 FPGA board, a QVGA grade CMOS camera, and an LCD Display. It was verified that the engine demonstrated excellent performance in diverse real life environments and in a face detection standard database. As a result, a high performance real time face detection engine that can conduct real time processing at speeds of at least 60 frames per second, which is effective against lighting changes and face rotating changes and can detect 32 faces in diverse sizes simultaneously, was developed.

  • Since the energy shock in 1973, there have been wide studies for the developments of the alternative energy source, the rationalization of the energy utilization and the energy economy because of the recognition of the limitation of energy source all over the world. This study is experimentally examined in and compared with the engine performance of output, torque and fuel consumption rate, and the exhaust emissions with the change of engine rmp in the cases of using water-gashol blends, gashol and gasoline as a fuel in a conventional 4 cycle 4 cylinder gasoline engine. In the case of using water-gashol blends, it is installed by the exhaust manifold pipe into the intake manifold, and water is injected from nozzle fitted up the air horn of the carburetor. The results are obtained as follows; 1. In the case of an addition with water, the engine output and the torque are little difference with the case of gasoline. 2. The fuel consumption rate is decreased as compared with the case of gasoline. Especially, the decrease in quantity is remarkable at the low rpm. 3. The exhaust emissions are remarkably decreased as compared with the case of gasoline. Especially, decreases of CO and HC in quantity are remarkable at the low rpm, and a decrease of No/sub x/ in quantity is remarkable at the high rpm. 4. There is a moderate condition of operation because the producing factors of NO/sub x/ and CO, HC are contrary to each other.

  • The scavenging efficiency has a great influence on the performance of a diesel engine, especially slow two-stroke diesel engines which are usually used as a marine propulsion power plant. And this is greatly affected by the conditions in the cylinder, scavenging manifold and exhaust manifold during the gas exchange process. There are many factors to affect on the scavenging efficiency and these factors interact each other very complicatedly. Therefore the simulation program of the gas exchange process is very useful to improve and predict the scavenging efficiency, due to the high costs associated with redesign and testing. In this paper, a three-zone scavenging model for two-stroke uniflow engines was developed to link a control-volume-type engine simulation program for performance prediction of long-stroke marine engines. In this model it was attempted to simulate the three different regions perceived to exist inside the cylinder during scavenging, namely the air, mixing and combystion products regions, by modeling each region as a seperate control volume. Finally the scavenging efficiency was compared with three type of scavenging modes, that is, pure displacement, partial mixing and prefect mixing.
