Effect of process parameters on the quality of condenser discharge weld for coated sheet steels was discussed. The welding specimens were coated with pure Zn of 20/20 g/m2 in the production line. Direct measurements of welding parameters such as the discharge current, the pressures and the voltage drop across the electrodes were carried out with welding process monitoring system. High speed camera was also utilized to analyze the weld formation process. Test results indicated that the relation between weld strength and applied energy was stabilized at the acceptable welding heat input range. It was thought that the acceptable welding heat input should be redefined based on the monitored data because the calculated value of the welding heat input could hardly be utilized if the discharge condition was changed. Mechanical test results and high speed photographs showed that expulsion deteriorated the weld quality and the strength at the same time especially when the size of the spatter was large enough to carry the molten metal, which should form the nugget, out of the welding spot. Results also demonstrated that the discharge current should be applied at the appropriate time during the process because sufficient nugget was not produced if the time was deviated from the optimum range.
For high performance and structural stability, application of high strength steel has continuously increased. However, the change of the base metal gives rise to problems with the accuracy management of the welded structure. It is attributed to the martensite phase transformation of the high strength low alloy steel weldment. The purpose of this study is to establish the predictive equation of transverse shrinkage and residual stress for the HY-100 weldment. In order to do it, high speed quenching dilatometer tests were performed to define a coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) at the heating and cooling stage of HY-100 with various cooling rates. Uncoupled thermal-mechanical finite element(FE) models with CTE were proposed to evaluate the effect of the martensite phase transformation on transverse shrinkage and residual stresses at the weldment. FEA results were verified by comparing with experimental results. Based on the results of extensive FEA and experiments, the predictive equation of transverse shrinkage and longitudinal shrinkage force at the HY-100 weldment were formulated as the function of welding heat input/in-plane rigidity and welding heat input respectively.
In recently, according to increase the construction rate of steel bridge, it is necessary to develop the high strength, high toughness steel. Thus, this study show to evaluate the fatigue characteristic of SWS 570 B first used within a country. With the weld-joined compact tension specimens compared with each other, that is, transverse and lengthwise about the crack propagation, high and low in the input heat level, the fatigue test were performed. The log-log curves between the fatigue crack propagation rate da/dN and the transition range of the stress intensity factor ${\Delta}K$ ahead the crack tip were drawed, with these data. By using this curve, we obtained C and m which is material constant from Paris-Erdogan power law. The obtained results from this study indicate that fatigue crack growth rate of SWS 570 B is not influenced by softening effect which occurs in the HAZ(heat-affected zone) when high and low heat input weld is carried out. Softening effects, which affect fatigue properties, are shown that it is not affected to the fatigue growth rates significantly.
High capacity container carrier has been considered for many decades to transport the more containers at the same time. Therefore, it is required for high capacity container ship to be applied thicker plate to accomodate a number of containers compared to that of general container ship. To maintain the same productivity of this thicker plate, new welding process should be considered. One of the process for vertical-up position is 2 electrodes EGW(Electro Gas Welding). 2 ectrodes EGW was applied and evaluated whether it can be applicable or not. The heat input used for 72mm thick plate was 520k11cm. from the mechanical test, it is considered that this process can be applicable, showing satisfaction of mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation and impact property.
Until now, many researches on laser-arc hybrid welding processes have been conducted mainly for high power CW laser and high direct current arc to weld the thick steel plates for shipbuilding. Recently, however the usage of thin steel plates, which tend to be deformed easily by thermal energy, is been increasing because of demand of light structure such as car body in the automobile industry. Accordingly, heat sources having relatively low heat input such as pulsed laser, dip-transfer DC GMA and pulsed GMA seem to be applied more increasingly and the study about those heat sources is needed more intensively. Any heat source mentioned above can not stand alone without weld defects at a relatively high welding speed for increasing the welding productivity. This is main reason to apply the hybrid welding process which uses pulsed laser and low-heat-input GMA heat sources simultaneously to weld the thin steel plate. In this study, parameters of pulsed laser and dip-transfer DC GMA welding are studied firstly through preliminary experiments, and then analyzed in the viewpoint of their physical phenomena. Before conducting the hybrid welding, a pulse control technique is developed based on the parallel port communication and Visual C++ 6.0. Owing to development of this technique, interactions of laser and arc pulses can be controlled consistently. Using the pulse control technique, the hybrid welding is conducted and then its interactive welding phenomenon is analyzed.
