In this paper we have proposed an efficient coding algorithm using directional filtering. First an image is transformed by using DCT which has better energy compaction and then the transformed image is divided into a low frequency component and several high frequency components. The transformed coefficients of each parts are transmitted respectively by using huffman code and these are transformed inversely at receiver. For the directional components total edge images are reconstructed at zero crossing points. We are able to reduce the amount of data by getting of complex component and making directional angles 90. As a results, this proposed method is better than that of Kunt in respect of processing time and memories. We have 38dB of image quality with objective measurement of PSNR and 0.26bpp of compression ratio which is acceptable.
A phasor estimation algorithm based on the least square curve fitting technique for the distorted secondary current due to current transformer (CT) saturation is proposed. The mathematical form of the secondary current during CT saturation is represented as the scaled primary current with magnetizing current. The information on the scaled primary current is estimated using the least square technique, with the measured secondary current in the saturated section. The proposed method can estimate the phasor of a fundamental frequency component during the saturated period. The performance of the algorithm is validated under various fault and CT conditions using a C400 CT model. A series of performance evaluations shows that the proposed phasor estimation algorithm can estimate the phasor of the fundamental frequency component with high accuracy, regardless of fault conditions and CT characteristics.
In this paper, we propose a two-scale fusion method for infrared and visible images using saliency and variance. The images are separated into two scales respectively: a base layer of low frequency component and a detailed layer of high frequency component. Then, these are synthesized using weight. The saliencies and the variances of the images are used as the fusion weights for the two-scale images. The proposed method is tested on several image pairs, and its performance is evaluated quantitatively by using objective fusion metrics.
This study aimed to investigate whether inhaling the aroma of essential oils could alleviate physiological stress responses and mimic the effects of forest therapy in urban settings. Briefly, 31 participants underwent stress index assessments for two days and inhaled the selected plant essential oils. The effects of this treatment on physiological responses were determined through electroencephalogram (EEG) and heart rate variability (HRV) measurements taken before and after inhaling the aroma of essential oils, extracting results for low frequency (LF) and high frequency (HF) components of HRV, as well as 𝜃 and 𝛼 brainwave activities. The results indicated that lavender oil did not yield significant differences, whereas pine, chamomile, and cypress oils exhibited significant differences in effects. Overall, stress relief was associated with enhanced 𝜃 and 𝛼 brainwave activities, a decrease in the LF component and an increase in the HF component of HRV. Among the essential oils studied, pine oil was the most effective. These findings underscore the potential of plant essential oils in replicating the therapeutic benefits of forest therapy, even in urban environments. Further investigations into their utilization are warranted to better understand and harness their therapeutic potential.

The fabrication process of fiber placement system of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) requires real time process control and reliable inspection to ensure quality by preventing defects such as delamination and void. Therefore, novel non-contact inspection technique is required during the non-destructive evaluation in a fiber placement system. For the inspection of delamination in CFRP, various methods to receive laser-generated ultrasound were applied by using piezoelectric transducer, air-coupled transducer, wavelet transform and scanning laser ultrasonic technique. Laser-generated ultrasound was received with a conventional piezoelectric sensor in contacting manner. Then signal characteristics due to defects were analyzed to find a factor for detecting defects. Air-coupled transducer was used for reception of laser-generated guided wave using linear slit array in order to generate high frequency guided wave. And line scan technique was used to confirm the capability of on-line application. The high frequency component of laser-generated guided wave received with piezoelectric sensor disappeared after propagating through delamination region. Nevertheless, it was failed to receive high frequency guided wave in using air-coupled transducer. The first peak of the frequency spectrum under 100kHz in the delamination region is higher than in the sound region. By using this feature, the line scanned frequency data were acquired in fully non-contact generation and reception of ultrasound. This method was proved as useful technique for detecting delamination in CFRP.
Non-stationarity and non-Gaussian property are two of the most important characteristics of wind. These two features are studied in this study based on wind speed records measured at different heights from a 325 m high meteorological tower during the synoptic wind storms. By using the time-frequency analysis tools, it is found that after removing the low frequency trend of the longitudinal wind, the retained fluctuating wind speeds remain to be asymmetrically non-Gaussian distributed. Results show that such non-Gaussianity is due to the weak-stationarity of the detrended fluctuating wind speed. The low frequency components of the fluctuating wind speeds mainly contribute to the non-zero skewness, while distribution of the high frequency component is found to have high kurtosis values. By further studying the decomposed wind speed, the mechanisms of the non-Gaussian distribution are examined from the phase, turbulence energy point of view.
This paper describes the design and realization of an extra high frequency band $8{\times}8$ microstrip Butler matrix. Operation at 36 GHz is achieved with a frequency bandwidth exceeding 400 MHz. The circuit is implemented on a bi-layer microstrip structure using conventional manufacturing processes. This planar implementation of a Butler matrix is a key component of a switched beam smart antenna with printed antenna elements integrated on-board. Conception details, simulation results, and measurements are also given for the components (hybrid couplers, cross-couplers, and vertical inter-connections) used to implement the matrix.
In the microwave heating system, a ferroresonant transformer is used to regulate the magnetron power fluctuation. For the simplification, nonlinear characteristics of the transformer and the magnetron are idealized to be piecewise linear. Dipped peak shape of the magnetron current is explained qualitatively by considering the fundamental and third harmonic frequency components in the circuit. Design equations providing the values of the leakage inductance, turn ratio of the transformer and the capacitance are derived analytically by cosnidering the fundamental frequency component only. The ferroresonant transformer is designed to obtain a required regulation and high input power factor from the derived design equations, and analytical calculations are compared with experimental measurements.
Plasma display panel (PDP) has a serious thermal problem, because the luminance efficiency of the conventional PDP is about 1.5 lm/W and it is less than $3{\sim}5$ lm/W of cathode ray tube (CRT). Thus there is a need for improving the luminance efficiency of the PDP There are several approaches to improve the luminance efficiency of the PDP and we adopt the driving PDP at high frequency range from 400 kHz up to over 700 kHz. Since a PDP is regarded as an equivalent inherent capacitance, many types of sustaining drivers have been proposed and widely used to recover the energy stored in the PDP. However, these circuits have some drawbacks for driving PDP at high frequency range. In this paper, we investigate the effect of the parasitic components of PDP itself and driver when the reactive energy of panel is recovered. Various drivers are classified and evaluated whether it is suitable for high frequency driver, and finally current-fed type with do input voltage biased is proposed. This driver overcomes the effect of parasitic component in panel and driver and fully achieves ZVS of all full-bridge switches and reduces the transition time of the panel polarity.

In optical fiber communications, several newly-developed signal formats are used to obtain the best performance within limited spectral bandwidth. CSRZ (carrier-suppressed return-to-zero) format is one of the new signal formats, which has better spectral efficiency and better robustness to dispersion than RZ (return-to-zero) format. Thus it is widely used for demonstrating high-speed optical communication systems. In an earlier research, we proposed a clock-extraction method of CSRZ signal to monitor chromatic dispersion. However, the clock-frequency component extracted by the clock-extraction method can be affected by the bandwidth of a transmitter or a receiver. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the effect of bandwidth on the chromatic dispersion monitoring of CSRZ signal based on clock-frequency component. As a result, we propose a couple of robust clock-extraction methods to monitor chromatic dispersion in CSRZ signal.
