  • Elimination of the heat treatment process is very important in automation of metal forming since controlling heat treatment by computer has many difficulties and it has bottle neck problem. non-heat-treated steels materials which are not in need of heat treatment have been developed for cold forging. However to apply non-heat-treated steel to structural parts. it is necessary to prove reliability of mechanical properties. In order to define the reliability of mechanical properties we have investigated microstructure, hardness, the tensile strength compressive strength and tensile fatigue strength for both steels. Considering the results of high cycle fatigue test for both specimen the characteristics of non-heat-treated steel are decided on the yield strength, It has same tendency for heat-treated steel. Therefore non-heat-treated steel which has the appropriate yield strength may be applied in cold forging.

  • Due to the high specific strength and stiffness of the composite materials, the composite materials have been extensively used in various industries. In particular, carbon fiber reinforced composites are widely used in many mechanical structures. In addition, since carbon fiber reinforced composites have anisotropic properties, to understand the fatigue behavior of composites with different fiber orientation is very important for the efficient structural design. Therefore, in this paper, the effect fiber orientation on the fatigue life of composite materials was experimentally evaluated. For this purpose, tensile and fatigue tests were performed on the off-axis specimens (0°, 10°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°) of the composite materials. As a result of the fatigue tests, the fatigue strength of the composites decreased significantly as the fatigue strength slightly deviated from 0 degrees. On the other hand, the more deviated, the less decreased. This is because the role of supporting the load of fibers decreased as the stacking angle increased. In addition, the fatigue behavior was analyzed by introducing a fatigue strength ratio (Ψ) that eliminates the fiber orientation dependence of the off-axis fatigue behaviors on the unidirectional composites. The off-axis fatigue S-N lines can be reduced to a single line regardless of the fiber orientation by using the fatigue strength ratio (Ψ). Using the fatigue Ψ-N line, it is possible to extract back to any off-axis fatigue S-N lines of the composites with different fiber orientations.

  • The fatigue life and crack penetration behavior of high strength steel have been studied in detail both experimentally and analytically. The fatigue crack shape of a smooth specimen is almost semicircular, while a specimen with stress concentration becomes semielliptical according to stress concentration shape. The aspect ratio of smooth specimens calculated using the Newman-Raju's formular is smaller than the value obtained from the experiment. On the other hand, the aspect ratio of the stress concentration specimen shows a good agreement with experimental results. It is found that the crack growth behavior on the back surface after the penetration is unique and can be divided into three stages ; rapid growth region, constant growth region and acceleration growth region. By using the K value suggested in this study, the particular crack growth behavior and crack shape can be estimated quantitatively.

  • The effect of stress waveforms on corrosin fatigue and the role of dissolution mechanism in 3NilCr steel and 20Ni maraging steel have been investigated in aerated 3% NaCl solution and synthetic seawater under sinusoidal, triangular, square, positive sawtooth, negative sawtooth, and trapezoidal stress waveforms with open circuit at frequency of 1Hz and stress ratio of 0.1. The crack growth rates under square waveform were substantially lower than under sinusoidal and triangular waveforms, but the crack growth rates under sinusoidal waveform were slightly higher under triangular waveform. For a given frequency the growth rates under the positive sawtooth waveform are higher than those under the negative sawtooth waveform. The fatigue crack growth rates of most specimens were in good agreement with the values calculated by the model based on the dissoultion mechanism.

  • Surface hardening treatments, such as using the high-frequency induction hardening method, are widely used to increase the fatigue life and prevent the failure of materials by locally increasing the surface hardness. This method, in particular, brings an improvement in static strength by compressive residual surface stress due to the hardening. In this study, the mechanical properties of high-frequency induction hardened SCM440 steel were investigated. These results were also compared with those for base metal and a Q/T (tempering after quenching) treatment specimen. The test results showed that partially high-frequency induction hardened SCM440 steel specimens were more improved in static strength, surface hardness, fatigue limit, and anti-wear than the base metal and Q/T treatment specimens. In particular, the fatigue limit of the high-frequency induction hardened SCM440 steel increased by more than about 52% compared to that of base metal and by about 25% compared to that of the Q/T specimen.

  • TMCP steel manufactured by controlled rolling followed by accelerated cooling process is known to have extra-ordinary mechanical properties such as tensile strength and toughness. However, there is much uncertainty about the fatigue fracture characteristics, especially, in the welded state of this steel. In case of this steel, the softening zone by welding is generated in heat affected zone in contrast with the case of conventional normalized high strength steel. This softening zone is considered to play significant roles in low cycle fatigue fracture of the welded part of this steel. In this paper, the low cycle fatigue behaviors of TMCP steel were inspected in as-received and welded state using the smooth specimen. The fatigue life-time was seperately investigated on the basis of failure of the specimen and crack initiation which is detected by differential strain method. Moreover, the low cycle fatigue characteristics of TMCP steel were quantitatively compared with those of the conventional normalized steel of same strength level.

  • Effects of a nitriding treatment on the tensile and high cycle fatigue properties were investigated by conducting ion-nitriding and gas nitro-caburizing treatments on the spheroidized SCr430B medium-carbon steel and performing tensile and tension-tension high cycle fatigue tests. The nitrided samples showed much lower strength and ductility compared to those in the initial as-spheroidized state and premature fracture occurred at the hardened layers. The micro-voids in the compound layer caused fatigue crack initiation. Thus, the removal of the compound layer with micro-voids remarkably improved the fatigue resistance to even beyond that of the as-spheroidized sample.

  • Very long life fatigue tests were carried out on 16Mn steel base metal and its welded joint by using the ultrasonic fatigue testing technique. Specimen shapes (round and plate) were considered for both the base metal and welded joint. The results show that the specimens present different S-N curve characteristics in the region of $10^5-10^9$ cycles. The round specimens showed continuously decreasing tendency while plate specimens showed a steep decreasing step and an asymptotic horizontal one. The fatigue strength of round specimen was found higher than plate specimen. The fatigue strength of as-welded joint was 45.0% of the base material for butt joint and 40% for cruciform as-welded joint. It was found that fracture can still occur in butt joint beyond $5{\times}10^6$ cycles. The cruciform joint has a fatigue limit in the very long life fatigue regime ($10^7-10^9$ cycles). Fatigue strength of butt as-welded joint was much higher as compared to cruciform as-welded joint. Improvement in fatigue strength of welded joint was found due to UPT. The observation of fracture surface showed crack mainly initiated from welded toe at fusion areas or geometric discontinuity sites at the surface in butt joint and from welded toe in cruciform joint.

  • This paper is especially concerned with the weldment between support beam and square bar that plays important roles in control box of Expansion Joint as a brdige structure. Fatigue strength ({TEX}$$\sigma$_{ult}${/TEX}) of the weldment is dependent on notch factor ({TEX}$K_{f}${/TEX}) become important factors to predict fatigue life. The fatigue notch sensitivity (η) for metals can be divided into two types ; high and low notch sensitivity. In this work, the Expansion Joint weldment was found to have low notch sensitivity. The maximum strain distribution during static loading is similar to the FEM analysis. Fatigue test of real structure was performed up to {TEX}$10^{6}${/TEX} cycles to be compared with predicted endurance limit.

  • Under cyclic loading, the fatigue failures of welded joints occur at weld toes which induce stress concentration by weld shape. So we need to obtain the peak stress and the S-N curve to assess the fatigue strength of welded joints. However the measurement of peak stress is of high uncertainty and low reproducibility, so we use nominal stress instead in fatigue tests of welded joints. In this study, fatigue tests to obtain S-N curves and FE analyses to obtain stress concentration factors were conducted for the two types of cruciform fillet welded joints, that is, load-carrying and non load-carrying types. Then we changed the obtained S-N curves to that based on peak stress using the hot-spot stress concept. From the analyses of the S-N curves obtained, we have concluded that there is a need to develop a new method to evaluate the fatigue life.
