  • Recently, as the demand for immersive videos increases, efficient video processing techniques for omnidirectional immersive video is actively developed by MPEG-I. While the omnidirectional video provides a larger degree of freedom for a free viewpoint, the size of the video increases significantly. Furthermore, in order to compress 6 degree-of-freedom (6 DoF) videos that support motion parallax, it is required to develop a codec to yield better coding efficiency. In this paper, we develop a 6 DoF codec using Versatile Video Coding (VVC) as the next generation video coding standard. To the authors' best knowledge, this is the first VVC-based 6 DoF video codec toward the future ISO/IEC 23090 Part 7 (Metadata for Immersive Media (Video)) MPEG-I standardization. The experiments were conducted on the seven test video sequences specified in Common Test Condition (CTC) in two operation modes of TMIV (Test Model for Immersive Media) software. It is demonstrated that the proposed codec improves coding performance around 33.8% BD-rate reduction in the MIV (Metadata for Immersive Video) mode and 30.2% BD-rate reduction in the MIV view mode as compared to the state-of-the-art TMIV reference software. We also show the performance comparisons using Immersive Video PSNR (IV-PSNR) and Mean Structural Similarity (MSSIM).

  • With the help of fast growing multimedia technology and high preference for users of large screens, the newest video coding standard, HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) high-quality video compression), has been introduced. Therefore, the high definition image services which are four times more clear than conventional HD video, are getting popular. JPEG 2000 also has stated to support 4K and 8K UHD. As a result, it requires fast processing technology to read and write UHD images. This paper introduces a study on fast parallel processing technology for UHD images. For this purpose, first, JPEG 2000 is reviewed and a GPU based parallel implementation is proposed for a preprocessing of color conversion stage. The parallelled algorithm is implemented with OpenCL (Open Computing Language). The simulation results show that the proposed method shows 5 times performance improvements on processing speed for 4K UHD over the method using threads.

  • Even after establishment of H.264/AVC standard, the video coding experts group (VCEG) of ITU-T has researched on development of promising coding techniques to increase coding efficiency based on the key technology area (KTA) software. Recently, the joint collaboration team video coding (JCT-VC) which was composed of the VCEG and the motion picture experts group (MPEG) of ISO/IEC is developing a next-generation video standard namely HEVC intended to gain twice efficiency than H.264/AVC. An adaptive interpolation technique, one of various next-generation techniques, reported higher coding efficiency. However, it has high computational complexity and does not deal with various error characteristics for videos. In this paper, we investigate characteristics of interpolation filters and propose an effective fixed interpolation filter bank including diverse properties of error. Experimental results is shown that the proposed method achieved bitrate reduction by 0.7% and 1.3% compared to fixed directional interpolation filter (FDIF) of the KTA and the directional interpolation filter (DIF) of the HEVC test model, respectively.

HM의 여러 기술 중에서 확장 블록 구조 (large block structure) 기술은 CU(Coding Unit)와 TU(Transform Unit), PU(Partition Unit)로 구성된다.

  • In 3D video compression, a disparity vector (DV) pointing a corresponding block position in an adjacent view is a key coding tool to exploit statistical correlation in multi-view videos. In this paper, neighboring block-based disparity vector (NBDV) is shown with detail algorithm descriptions and coding performance analysis. The proposed method derives a DV from disparity motion vector information, obtained from spatially and temporally neighboring blocks, and provides a significant coding gain about 20% BD-rate saving in a texture-video-first-coding scheme. The proposed DV derivation method is adopted into the recent 3D video coding standards such as 3D-AVC and 3D-HEVC as the state-of-the-art DV derivation method.

  • H.264/AVC is the international video coding standard which has significant improvements of coding efficiency. ITU-T(International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication standardization sector) and MPEG(Moving Picture Experts Group) adopts various complex coding tool such as variable block size motion, multiple reference frames, quarter-pel motion estimation/compensation (ME/MC) and rate-distortion(RD) optimization, etc. H.264 reference model employs complex mode decision technique based on RD optimization which requires high computational complexity. In this paper, we propose an efficient coding mode decision based on the cost distribution of RD in the macroblock coding mode sequence. Simulation results show that the proposed method reduces encoding time by 34% on average and save the number of computing RD cost by 82%.

  • Multi-view video plus depth (MVD) is a mainstream format of 3D scene representation in free viewpoint video systems. The advanced 3D extension of the high efficiency video coding (3D-HEVC) standard introduces new prediction tools to improve the coding performance of depth video. However, the depth video in 3D-HEVC is time consuming. To reduce the complexity of the depth video inter coding, we propose a fast coding unit (CU) size and mode decision algorithm. First, an off-line trained Bayesian model is built which the feature vector contains the depth levels of the corresponding spatial, temporal, and inter-component (texture-depth) neighboring largest CUs (LCUs). Then, the model is used to predict the depth level of the current LCU, and terminate the CU recursive splitting process. Finally, the CU mode search process is early terminated by making use of the mode correlation of spatial, inter-component (texture-depth), and inter-view neighboring CUs. Compared to the 3D-HEVC reference software HTM-10.0, the proposed algorithm reduces the encoding time of depth video and the total encoding time by 65.03% and 41.04% on average, respectively, with negligible quality degradation of the synthesized virtual view.

  • H.264 is the newest international video coding standard that provides high coding efficiency. A macroblock in H.264 has 7 different motion-compensation block sizes in the Inter mode, and several different prediction directions in the Intra mode. In order to achieve as highest coding efficiency as possible, H.264 reference model employs complex mode decision technique based on rate-distortion (RD) optimization which requires high computational complexity. In this paper, we propose two techniques -'early SKIP mode decision' and 'selective intra mode decision' - which can further reduce the computational complexity. Simulation results show that without considerable performance degradation, the proposed methods reduce encoding time by 30% on average and save the number of computing rate-distortion cost by 72%.

  • HEVC (high efficiency video coding) exploits CABAC (context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding) for entropy coding, where a context model estimates the probability for each syntax element. In this paper, a context modeler was designed and implemented for CABAC decoding. lookup table was used to reduce computation and to increase speed. 12 simulations for HEVC standard test sequences and encoder configurations were performed, and the context modeler was verified to perform correction operations. The designed context modeler was synthesized in 0.18um technology. Maximum frequency, maximum throughput, and gate count are 200 MHz, 200 Mbin/s, and 29,268 gates, respectively.
