A portable count-ratemeter and a thermoluminescent detector ($CaSO_4:Dy$) have been used to obtain total gamma dose rates at approximately 50 locations during the course of several survey trips in the southeastern Korea. The purposes of these measurement were to provide a future reference data and to establish the approximate range of population exposure to the natural environmental radiation. The natural levels encountered ranged from a low of 14.6 microroentgen per hour to a high of 18.9 microroentgen per hour with a mean of $16.3{\pm}1.0$ microroentgen per hour. Among these results are the relatively high natural dose rate levels in the Masan area and Yangsan-Tongdosa area with the relatively low natural dose rate levels in the Gyeongsan-Cheongdo area and the Samrangjin-Jinyeong-Gimhae area.
Nowadays a huge variety of products that aim to assist to quit smoking or reduce addictive symptoms are developed and manufactured with safety evaluation, but the safety of the most recent products of interest which do not contain tobacco and nicotine, and shape cigarettes is not evaluated and guaranteed relatively. This study was carried out to evaluate the single and repeated dose inhalation toxicity and genotoxicity of H menthol (Nicotine free-tobacco free) herbal cigarettes provided by Cigastop Ltd. in ICR mice. In this study, doses which we determined to expose to mice were 40 cigarettes for 6 hours a day to mice in single dose and 20 (high dose), 10 (middle dose) and 5 cigarettes (low dose) a day for 28 days in repeated dose inhalation toxicity, in vivo chromosome aberration test and micronucleus test. The particulate substances from H menthol herbal cigarettes also were gathered and used in the Salmonella typhimurium/microsome assay (Salmonella test; Ames test). We could find neither significant changes between control and treatment groups nor dose-response effects of test material at all except serum Ca level of female middle dose treatment group in repeated dose inhalation toxicity test. In conclusion, H menthol herbal cigarettes, when applied clinically intended dose we used, might not show any toxic and/or mutagenic effect.
In this study, defluoridation efficiency by aluminium sulphate (alum) and polyaluminium chloride (PACl) were compared for recommended Nalgonda dose (100%) and 80% of this dose in both batch and continuous modes. The residual turbidity was found to be higher in case of alum as compared to PACl with 80% dose representing lesser efficient settling of suspensions, which primarily comprise alumino-fluoro complexes that result in high residual aluminium in the treated water and this was confirmed by TEM and Zeta analysis. Moreover, the application of PACl also resulted in much lesser addition to the TDS and also required lesser lime for pH compensation due to its lower acidity. Hence this reduced dose was recommended for defluoridation. It was also observed that in case of alum, residual aluminium in treated water was 0.88 mg/L (100% dose) & 0.72 mg/L (80% dose) and in case of PACl, it was 0.52 mg/L(100% dose) & 0.41 mg/L(80% dose). After subsequent microfiltration, residual aluminium was 0.28 & 0.21 mg/L for 100% & 80% dose respectively and in case of alum and in case of PACl, it was 0.16 & 0.11 for 100% & 80% dose respectively, which conform to the Al standards(<0.2 mg/L).
This study used a adult absorption dose phantom (CIRS model 701-G, USA) made of human equivalent material and the vascular imaging equipment Allura Xper FD 20 (Philips, Netherlands). Optically stimulated luminescent dosimeters (OSLD) were inserted into the anatomical positions corresponding to each organ, and the exposure dose was measured. Dose area product (DAP) and air kerma (AK) measured by the dose meter in the equipment were compared. Continuous imaging was performed at two angles for a total of 20 minutes, with a frame per seconds of 3.75 and 7.5 fps and an FOV of 42 cm, 37 cm, and 31 cm, respectively, under the conditions of fluoflavor I, II, and III, each selected for 5 repetitions. This study was found that selecting a lower fps was the most effective way to reduce patient exposure dose, and adjusting the fluoflavor was a good alternative method for reducing patient exposure dose at high fps. Therefore the method of condition change with the greatest dose reduction effect is to set the minimum FPS and can reduce patient exposure dose according to geometric conditions and fluoflavor characteristics.
Objectives: This study was performed to check for reversibility in the changes induced by a 13-week, repeated, dose toxicity test of Sweet Bee Venom (SBV) in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Methods: Fifteen male and 15 female SD rats were treated with 0.28 mg/kg of SBV (high-dosage group) and the same numbers of male and female SD rats were treated with 0.2 mL/kg of normal saline (control group) for 13 weeks. We selected five male and five female SD rats from the high-dosage group and the same numbers of male and female SD rats from the control group, and we observed these rats for four weeks. We conducted body-weight measurements, ophthalmic examinations, urinalyses and hematology, biochemistry, histology tests. Results: (1) Hyperemia and movement disorder were observed in the 13-week, repeated, dose toxicity test, but these symptoms were not observed during the recovery period. (2) The rats in the high-dose group showed no significant changes in weight compared to the control group. (3) No significant differences in the ophthalmic parameters, urine analyses, complete blood cell counts (CBCs), and biochemistry were observed among the recovery groups. (4) No changes in organ weights were observed during the recovery period. (5) Histological examination of the thigh muscle indicated cell infiltration, inflammation, degeneration, necrosis of muscle fiber, and fibrosis during the treatment period, but these changes were not observed during the recovery period. The fatty liver change that was observed during the toxicity test was not observed during the recovery period. No other organ abnormalities were observed. Conclusion: The changes that occurred during the 13-week, repeated, dose toxicity test are reversible, and SBV can be safely used as a treatment modality.
Whole bee venom (WBV) and its major component, melittin, have been reported to induce long-lasting spontaneous flinchings and hyperalgesia. The current study was designed to elucidate the peripheral and spinal mechanisms of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and non-NMDA receptors by which intraplantar (i.pl.) injection of WBV and melittin induced nociceptive responses. Changes in mechanical threshold and flinching behaviors were measured after the injection of WBV (0.04 mg or 0.1 mg/paw) and melittin (0.02 mg or 0.05 mg/paw) into the mid-plantar area of a rat hindpaw. MK-801 and CNQX (6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione disodium) were administered intrathecally (i.t. $10{\mu}g$) or i.pl.($15{\mu}g$) 15 min before or i.t. 60 min after i.pl. WBV and melittin injection. Intrathecal pre- and postadministration of MK-801 and CNQX significantly attenuated the ability of high dose WBV and melittin to reduce paw withdrawal threshold (PWT). In the rat injected with low dose, but not high dose, of WBV and melittin, i.pl. injection of MK-801 effectively suppressed the decrease of PWTs only at the later time-points, but the inhibitory effect of CNQX (i.pl.) was significant at all time-point after the injection of low dose melittin. High dose WBV- and melittin-induced spontaneous flinchings were significantly suppressed by i.t. administration of MK-801 and CNQX, and low dose WBV- and melittin-induced flinchings were significantly reduced only by intraplantarly administered CNQX, but not by MK-801. These experimental flinchings suggest that spinal, and partial peripheral mechanisms of NMDA and non-NMDA receptors are involved in the development and maintenance of WBV- and melittin-induced nociceptive responses.

This study was conducted to compare the anesthetic effects of 2,2,2-tribromoethanol (TBE, $Avertin^{(R)}$) in ICR mice obtained from three different sources. TBE (2.5%) was intraperitoneally injected at three doses: high-dose group (500 mg/kg), intermediate-dose group (250 mg/kg), and low-dose group (125 mg/kg). Anesthesia time, recovery time, end-tidal peak $CO_2$ ($ETCO_2$), mean arterial blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation ($SpO_2$), body temperature, pH, $PCO_2$, and $PO_2$ of the arterial blood were measured. Stable anesthesia was induced by all doses of TBE and the anesthesia time was maintained exhibited dose dependency. No significant differences in anesthetic duration were found among the three different strains. However, the anesthesia time was longer in female than in male mice, and the duration of anesthesia was significantly longer in female than in male mice in the high-dose group. The recovery time was significantly longer for female than male mice in the intermediate- and high-dose groups. In the ICR strains tested, there were no significant differences in the mean arterial blood pressure, $SPO_2$, arterial blood $PCO_2$, and $PO_2$, which decreased after TBE anesthesia, or in heart rate and $ETCO_2$, which increased after TBE anesthesia. In addition, body temperature, blood biochemical markers, and histopathological changes of the liver, kidney, and lung were not significantly changed by TBE anesthesia. These results suggested that ICR mice from different sources exhibited similar overall responses to a single exposure to TBE anesthesia. In conclusion, TBE is a useful drug that can induce similar anesthetic effects in three different strains of ICR mice.
The effect of dose enhancement was evaluated using Snyder head phantom, dependence on size of gold nanoparticle and material concentration in megavoltage X, ${\gamma}$-ray. Monte Carlo simulation using MCNPX was used for 4, 6, 10, 15 MV and Co-60 ${\gamma}$-ray. Described the tumor in Snyder head phantom, gold nanoparticle of 25, 75, 125nm diameter was inserted inside tumor. Concentration of dose enhancement material was used for 5, 15, 25 mg/g and dose enhancement factor was calculated on the basis of the no dose enhancement material. The lower incident energy and the higher concentration of material were that high dose enhancement factor is indicated. The size of gold nanoparticle had relatively high dependence on lower incident energy and higher concentration of material. It will increase dose inside the tumor, and be additional effect of use of gold nanoparticles in radiation therapy.

After high-dose irradiation(8 Gy). the viability of lymphocyte with a prior low-dose irradiation was 3.7-fold higher than that without a prior low-dose irradiation The viability could be increased by the reduction of oxygen radicals or the removal of damaged molecules-DNA, protein. lipid membrane. or the removal of damaged cells. In this paper. we studied the radioresistance mechanism in lymphocytes and lymphoma cells by examining the activities of radical scavengers(catalase. peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase), and a radical protector(glutathione). Different enzymes were induced in lymphocyte and lymphoma with low-dose irradiation. The activity of peroxidase increased most(133.3%) in lymphoma while the enzymes increased most in lymphocyte were superoxide dismutase (138.5%), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (122.4%) and glutathione(120.8%). The activities of these enzymes were highest when the interval was 7 hours between low-dose and high-dose irradiation.
