  • It is necessary to improve mechanical and optical properties in the optical disk substrates as the information storage devices with high storage density using blue laser are being developed. Injection compression molding is regarded as the most suitable process to manufacture optical disk substrates for quality recording and read-out. In the present research, the effects of mold temperature and the insulation layer thickness on gapwise birefringence and the land-groove pattern were investigated. It was found that the values of the birefringence distribution were very sensitive to mold temperature history, and the level of birefringence reduced and, furthermore, the quality of replication was improved due to the insulation layer.

  • We have studied a electrically controlled birefringence (ECB) mode for field sequential liquid crystal display (FSLCD). We measured response time of the ECB mode. The ECB mode exhibiting fast response time, high transmittance, low operating voltage and adequate viewing angle. The positive liquid crystal (LC) is better than negative LC on dielectric anisotropy, birefringence and rotational viscosity. So that, the ECB mode is one of strongest candidate for FSLCD application.

  • High-speed melt spinning of syndiotactic polystyrene was carried out using high and low molecular weight polymers, HM s-PS and LM s-PS, at the throughput rates of 3 and 6 g/min. The effect of take-up velocity on the structure and properties of as-spun fibers was investigated. Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns of the as-spun fibers revealed that the orientation-induced crystallization started to occur at the take-up velocities of 2-3 km/min. The crystal modification was a-form. Birefringence of as-spun fibers showed negative value, and the absolute value of birefringence increased with an increase in the take-up velocity. The cold crystallization temperature analyzed through the differential scanning calorimetry (OSC) decreased with an increase in the take-up velocity in the low speed region, whereas as the melting temperature increased after the on-set of orientation-induced crystallization. It was found that the fiber structure development proceeded from lower take-up velocities when the spinning conditions of higher molecular weight and lower throughput rate were adopted. The highest tensile modulus of 6.5 GPa was obtained for the fibers prepared at the spinning conditions of LM s-PS, 6 g/min and 5 km/min, whereas the highest tensile strength of 160 MPa was obtained for the HM s-PS fibers at the take-up velocity of 2 km/min. Elongation at break of as-spun fibers showed an abrupt increase, which was regarded as the brittle-ductile transition, in the low speed region, and subsequently decreased with an increase in the take-up velocity. There was a universal relation between the thermal and mechanical properties of as-spun fibers and the birefringence of as-spun fibers when the fibers were still amorphous. The orientation-induced crystallization was found to start when the birefringence reached -0.02. After the starting of the orientation-induced crystallization, thermal and mechanical properties of as-spun fibers with similar level of birefringence varied significantly depending on the processing conditions.

  • We have studied a field sequential liquid crystal display (FSLCD) with electrically controlled birefringence (ECB). The ECB mode exhibiting fast response time, high transmittance, low operating voltage and adequate viewing angle. The positive liquid crystal (LC) is better than negative LC on dielectric anisotropy, birefringence and rotational viscosity. Because $K_{11}$ value out of the elastic coefficient of LC is also larger than $K_{22}$ value, decay time of VA-ECB is advantage. However, the transmittance & response time reduced with decreasing the cell gap. This drawback can be overcome by using LC with high ${\Delta}n$ but VA-ECB is occured loss of light efficiency because the $\gamma$ value increased by high ${\Delta}n$ of LC. Consequently, the HA-ECB mode is one of strongest candidate for FSLCD application.

  • We analyse the beam characteristics of the thermal-birefringence compensated symmetric resonator which consists of two laser rods with rod-end curvatures. The numerical results show that the stability and the beam quality can be improved in high power operation region when the rod-ends are made in the form of a negative lens. The thermal birefringence of the symmetric two-rods resonator is shown to be well compensated when the two rods closely contact each other.

  • A novel porous-core hexagonal lattice photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is designed and analyzed for efficient terahertz (THz) wave propagation. The finite element method based Comsol v4.2 software is used for numerical analysis of the proposed fiber. A perfectly matched layer boundary condition is used to characterize the guiding properties. Rectangular air-holes are used inside the core to introduce asymmetry for attaining high birefringence. By intentionally rotating the rectangular air holes of porous core structure, an ultrahigh birefringence of 0.045 and low effective material loss of $0.086cm^{-1}$ can be obtained at the operating frequency of 0.85 THz. Moreover, single-mode properties, power fraction in air core and confinement loss of the proposed PCF are also analyzed. This is expected to be useful for wideband imaging and telecom applications.

  • Polymer optical waveguides are fabricated with high-index materials deposited to strengthen exciations of evanescent field whose birefringence is utilized for optical sensing. Optical sensing properties are examined as a function of time, using different types of analyte solutions to extract noise-free signal induced by evanescent field birefringence. It is observed that sensing signal can be free of initial noise that may obscure real signal recognition, when glycerol is used for sensing characterization, due to slow accumulation process following adsorption of analyte material onto the sensing surface of the waveguide.

  • We have designed, synthesized, and evaluated the physical properties of some high birefringence (${\Delta}n$) isothiocyanato biphenyl-bistolane liquid crystals. These compounds exhibit ${\Delta}n^-$ 0.4-0.7 at room temperature and wavelength $\lambda$=633 nm. Laterally substituted short alkyl chains and fluorine atom eliminate smectic phase and lower the melting temperature. The moderate melting temperature and very high clearing temperature make those compounds attractive for eutectic mixture formulation. Several mixtures based on those compounds were formulated and its physical properties evaluated.

  • Field sequential liquid crystal display (FSLCD) has advantages such as a high transmittance due to no use of color filter and high color reproductivity because of LED backlight for a luminance source. However, to realize FSLCD response time of the LCD must be below 5ms. In this paper, we have chosen electrically controlled birefringence (ECB) mode for this application and studied film compensation to improve the operating voltage and viewing angle and to achieve a fast response time optimizing the condition of the discotic film and TAC film, operating voltage decreases to 5V, and viewing angle range is $160^{\circ}$ at horizontal and vertical direction, respectively and $120^{\circ}$ in diagonal direction. (contrast ratio > 10:1) and optimized cell exhibits a fast response time of 4ms in most grey levels.
