  • Recently, the demonstration and research on the power transmission using high voltage DC such as HVDC(High Voltage DC), Smart Grid, DC transmission and distribution have been actively conducted. In order to control the power converter in high-voltage DC power transmission system, SMPS(Switching Modulation Power Supply) for power converter control using high-voltage DC input is essential. However, the demand for high-pressure SMPS is still low, so the development is not enough. In the low-output SMPS using the high-voltage input, it is difficult to achieve high efficiency due to the switching transient loss especially at light load. In this paper, we propose a new switching scheme for high power SMPS control for low output power. The proposed method can provide better efficiency increase effect in the light load region compared to the existing PWM method. To verify the feasibility of the proposed method, a 40 W SMPS for HVDC MMC(Modulation Multi-level Converter) was designed and verified by simulation.

  • The researchers worldwide have been trying to apply high temperature superconducting wire for power system devices. High voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system has been used for bulk and long-distance power transmission. The authors designed a laboratory-scale superconducting DC transmission line to investigate its applicability to an HVDC system. The superconducting DC transmission line was simulated in connection to a laboratory-scale HVDC system using PSCAD/EMTDC. The operating characteristics of the superconducting DC transmission line connected to HVDC system and the effects of the superconducting DC transmission line on HVDC system were analyzed and compared with the results of a conventional DC transmission line. The results of operating characteristics for the superconducting DC transmission line were discussed in detail.

  • Wireless power transmission technology has been studied variety. Recently, wireless power transmission technology used by resonance and magnetic induction field is applied to various fields. However, magnetic resonance and inductive coupling are have drawbacks - power transmission distance is short. Microwave transmission and accept techniques have been developed to overcome short distance. However, improvement in efficiency is required. This paper, propose a high-efficiency microwave energy acceptor IC(EAIC). Suggested EAIC is consists of RF-DC converter and DC-DC converter. Wide Input power range is -15 dBm ~ 20 dBm. And output voltage is boosted up to 5.5 V by voltage boost-up circuit. EAIC can keep the output voltage constant. Available efficiency of RF-DC converter is 95.5 % at 4 dBm input. And DC-DC efficiency is 94.79 % at 1.1 mA load current. Fully EAIC efficiency is 90.5 %.

  • Switching surges are a common type of phenomenon that occur on any sort of power system network. These are more pronounced on long transmission lines and in high voltage converter stations. At AC/DC hybrid transmission lines, the insulation coordination of such lines is mainly dictated by the peak level of switching surges, the most dangerous of which include three phase line energization and AC/DC converter station. The power system structure consist of AC/DC hybrid transmission lines which is combination of AC 765kV and ±500kV HVDC 1 bipole system for contingency analysis. The power system under study and its components are simulated using EMTDC software package, the effects of the various AC/DC mixing power lines are reviewed. The developed models of EMTDC conversion lines based on combination of AC/DC system are simulated and the characteristics of switching surge over-voltage from its results are discussed.

  • The IGBT structure developed in this paper is used as a high power switch semiconductor for DC transmission and distribution and it is expected that it will be used as an important electronic device for new and long distance DC transmission in the future by securing fast switching speed and improved breakdown voltage characteristic. As a new type of next generation power semiconductors, it is designed to improve the switching speed while at the same time improving the breakdown voltage characteristics, reducing power loss characteristics, and achieving high current density advantages at the same time. These improved properties were obtained by further introducing SiO2 into the N-drift region of the Planar IGBT and were compared and analyzed using the Sentaurus TCAD simulation tool.

  • This paper presents the DC voltage control method in DC link of High Voltage Direct Current(HVDC) for an offshore wind farm in Low Voltage Ride Through(LVRT) situation. Wind generators in an offshore wind farm are connected to onshore network via HVDC transmission. Due to LVRT control of grid side inverter in HVDC, power imbalancing in DC link is generated and this consequentially causes rising of DC voltage. A de-loading scheme is one of the method to protect the wind power system DC link capacitors from over voltage. But the flaw of this method is slow control response time and that it needs long recovery time to pre-fault condition after fault clear. Thus, this paper proposes improved de-loading method and we analyze control performance for DC voltage in LVRT control of HVDC for an offshore wind farm.

  • AC-based power systems, having the advantages that voltage transformation and long distance transmission are easy, have been constructed since the last 19th century. However, DC-based power system is paid attention these days because of the development of power electronic devices as well as the increase of digital loads and distributed generation. For instance, the transmission systems using High Voltage DC (HVDC) are commercially operated in the world and the researches on distribution system using Low Voltage DC (LVDC) are gradually increased. This paper analyzes voltage sag, resulted from faults, in LVDC distribution system according to the number of poles. Modeling and simulation with various conditions are conducted by using ElectroMagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). Moreover, some countermeasures to reduce voltage sag in LVDC distribution system are suggested briefly.

  • Converter transformer is the key equipment of high voltage direct current transmission system. The solid suspending particles originating from the process of installation and operation of converter transformer have significant influence on the insulation performance of transformer oil, especially in presence of DC component in applied voltage. Under high electric field, the particles easily lead to partial discharge and breakdown of insulating oil. This paper investigated copper particle effect on the breakdown voltage of transformer oil at combined AC and DC voltage. A simulation model with single copper particle was established to interpret the particle effect on the breakdown strength of insulating oil. The experimental and simulation results showed that the particles distort the electric field. The breakdown voltage of insulating oil contaminated with copper particle decreases with the increase of particle number, and the breakdown voltage and the logarithm of particle number approximately satisfy the linear relationship. With the increase of the DC component in applied voltage, the breakdown voltage of contaminated insulating oil decreases. The simulation results show that the particle collides with the electrode more frequently with more DC component contained in the applied voltage, which will trigger more discharge and decrease the breakdown voltage of insulating oil.
