This paper are the mechanical characteristics of eccentrically loaded normal strength and high strength reinforced concrete columns based on the test results. The columns are $120\times120$mmat the mid-section and are haunched at the ends to apply the eccentric loading and prevent premature failure. Variables are concrete strengths(361, 672, 974 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$), $\textrm{cm}^2$longitudinal reinforcement ratios (1.98, 3.54, 1 5.53%), spacing of lateral reinforcement (30, 60, 120mm), and eccentricities (24, 40mm). As a results, the main conclusions obtained from the comparison and analysis for the strength tendency, deformation and ductility of high strength reinforced concrete columns with variables are as follows; As the concrete compressive strength concrete and lateral reinforcement increases, the ductility index of high strength reinforced concrete columns decrease, but it increase with the increase of eccentricity and longitudinal reinforcement ratio. The confinement ratio must be greater than 20 percent in order for the level of ductility between high strength reinforced concrete columns and normal strength reinforced concrete columns to be almost equal.
This paper is aiming to study the performances of reinforced high-strength concrete (HSC) short columns confined with aramid fibre-reinforced polymer (AFRP) sheets. An experimental program, which involved 45 confined columns and nine unconfined columns, was carried out in this study. All the columns were circular in cross section and tested under axial compressive load. The considered parameters included the concrete strength, amount of AFRP layers, and ratio of hoop reinforcements. Based on the experimental results, a prediction model for the axial stress-strain curves of the confined columns was proposed. It was observed from the experiment that there was a great increment in the compressive strength of the columns when the amount of AFRP layers increases, similar as the ultimate strain. However, these increments were reduced as the concrete strength increasing. Comparisons with other existing prediction models present that the proposed model can provide more accurate predictions.
As this study investigates the influence about type of transverse reinforcement, spacing of transverse reinforcement(s), volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement(${\rho}s$) of ultra-high strength concrete columns. It try to offer to resonable basic data of the confined model for the ultra-high concrete of in reinforced concrete columns. Experimental tests with large scaled columns were conducted under concentric axial loads. The ultra-high strength concrete (100MPa) was used. From this test result, it evaluate influence of the strength enhancement and ductility enhancement, important variables about behavior of the confined concrete by confinement of ultra-high strength reinforced concrete. There are two ways to improve the confinement effect of high strength concrete columns through the increase of amounts and/or strength of transverse reinforcement.
Although retrofitting and strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) columns by wrapping fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have become a popular technique in civil engineering, the study on reinforced high-strength concrete (HSC) columns is still not sufficient. The objective of these companion papers is to investigate the mechanical properties of reinforced HSC square columns confined by aramid FRP (AFRP) jackets under concentric compressive loading. In the part I of these companion papers, an experiment was conducted on 54 confined RC specimens and nine unconfined plain specimens, the considered parameters were the concrete strength, the thickness of AFRP jackets, and the form of AFRP wrapping. The experimental process and results are presented in detail. Subsequently, some discussions on the confinement effect, failure modes, strength, and ductility of the columns are carried out.
The ductility is an important consideration in the design of reinforced concrete structures. In the seismic design of reinforced concrete columns, it is necessary to allow for relatively large ductilities that the seismic energy be absorbed without shear failure of significant strength degradation after the reinforcement yielding in columns. Therefore, prediction of the ductility should be as accurate as possible. This research investigate the ductile behavior of rectangular reinforced high-strength concrete columns like as bridge piers with confinement steel. The effects on the ductility of axial load, lateral reinforcement ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, shear span ratio, and compressive strength of concrete were investigated analytically using layered section analysis. as the results, it was proposed the proper relationship between ductility and variables and formulated into equations.

Spalling is defined as damages to concrete exposed to high temperature during fire, causing cracks and localized bursting of small pieces of concrete. As the concrete strength increases, the degree of damage caused by spalling becomes more serious due to impaired permeability. It is reported that polypropylene(PP) fiber has an important role in protecting concrete from spalling, and the optimum dosage of PP fiber is 0.2%. However, this study was conducted on non-reinforced concrete specimens. The high-temperature behavior of high-strength reinforced concrete columns with various concrete strength and various quantity of PP fibers is investigated in this study. The results revealed that the ratio of unstressed residual strength of columns increased as the concrete strength increased and as the quantity of PP fiber increased from 0% to 0.2%. However, the effect of PP fiber quantity on residual strength of column was barely above 0.2%.

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of transverse steel in reinforced concrete tied columns subjected to monotonically increasing axial compression. Eighteen large-scale columns($260{\times}260{\times}1,200mm$) were tested. Effects of such main variables as concrete compressive strength, configurations of transverse steel, transverse reinforcement ratio, spacing of transverse steel, and spalling of concrete cover were investigated. High-strength concrete columns under concentric axial loads show extremely brittle behavior unless the columns are confined with transverse steel that can provide sufficiently high lateral confinement pressure. A consistent decrease in the deformability of the column test specimens was observed with increasing concrete strength. Test results of this study were compared with existing confinement models of modified Kent-Park, Sheikh-Uzumeri, Mander, and Saatcioglu-Razvi. The comparison indicates many existing models to predict the behavior of confined concrete overestimate or underestimate the ductility of confined concrete.

With increasing use of high strength concrete tied columns in structural engineering, it becomes necessary to examine the applicability of related sections of current design codes. High strength concrete has an advantage of strength capacity and stiffness especially for column elements. This paper presents an experimental study of high strength concrete tied columns subjected to eccentric loading. The main variables included in this test were concrete compressive strength, steel amount, eccentricity, and slenderness ratio. The concrete compressive strength varied from 34.9Mpa(356kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$
) to 93.2Mpa(951kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$
) and the longitudinal steel ratios were between 1.1% and 5.5%. The eccentricity was selected for the different failure modes, i.e., compression control, balanced point, and tension control. The slenderness ratio varied from 19 to 61. The column specimens with same slenderness ratio but with different concrete compressive strength were constructed and tested. The purpose of this paper is to show failure modes of high strength reinforced concrete columns.

This paper presents a proposed method for producing reinforced composite concrete columns reinforced with various types of metallic and non metallic mesh reinforcement. The experimental program includes casting and testing of twelve square columns having the dimensions of $100mm{\times}100mm{\times}1000mm$ under concentric compression loadings. The test samples comprise all designation specimens to make comparative study between conventionally reinforced concrete column and concrete columns reinforced with welded steel mesh, expanded steel mesh, fiber glass mesh and tensar mesh. The main variables are the type of innovative reinforcing materials, metallic or non metallic, the number of layers and volume fraction of reinforcement. The main objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of employing the new innovative materials in reinforcing the composite concrete columns. The results of an experimental investigation to examine the effectiveness of these produced columns are reported and discussed including strength, deformation, cracking, and ductility properties. Non-linear finite element analysis; (NLFEA) was carried out to simulate the behavior of the reinforced concrete composite columns. The numerical model could agree the behavior level of the test results. ANSYS-10.0 Software. Also, parametric study is presented to look at the variables that can mainly affect the mechanical behaviors of the model such as the change of column dimensions. The results proved that new reinforced concrete columns can be developed with high strength, crack resistance, and high ductility properties using the innovative composite materials.
Experiments were carried out to investigate the seismic behaviors, such as lateral strength, ductility and energy-dissipation capacity. of high-strength concrete (HSC) square short column confined in thin steel shell. The primary objective of the study was to investigate the suitability of using HSC square columns confined in thin steel shell in region of moderate-to-high seismic risk. A total of six columns, consisting of two ordinarily reinforced concrete square short columns and four reinforced concrete square short columns confined in thin steel shell was tested. Column specimens, short columns in a moment resisting frame with girder. were tested under a constant axial and reversed cyclic lateral loads. To design the specimens. transverse reinforcing methods, level of axial load applied, and the steel tube width-thickness ratio (D/t) were chosen as main parameters. Test results were also discussed and compared in the light of improvements in general behaviors, ductility, and energy-absorption capacities. Compared to conventionally reinforced concrete columns, the HSC columns confined in thin steel shell had similar load-displacement hysteretic behavior but exhibited greater energy-dissipation characteristics . It is concluded that, in strong earthquake areas, the transverse reinforcing method by using a thin steel shell (D/t=125) is quite effective to make HSC short columns with very strong and ductile.
