Bumper is designed to protect the automotive frame without damage at low velocity. Expanded polypropylene (EPP) foam is used in the bumper as an energy absorbing material. In order to exactly predict the energy absorbing performance of the foam material under impact loading condition, it is important to use high strain rate material properties. In this study, a new apparatus for dynamic compression tests was developed to investigate the high strain rate behavior of EPP foams. Three kinds of EPP foams which have different expansion ratios were tested to investigate the quasi-static and dynamic compression behavior. Quasi-static compressions were performed at low strain rates of 0.001/s, 0.1/s and 1/s. The dynamic compressions were carried out at high strain rates of 50/s and 100/s with the developed apparatus. It was observed that the EPP foam has significant strain rate effect as compared to quasi-static behavior.
To make a practical application of a micro-strain sensors with ultrahigh sensitivity, a strain on electrical properties of micro-patterned amorphous (Fe\ulcornerco\ulcorner)\ulcornerSi\ulcornerB\ulcorner films had influenced on the impedance over frequency range from 1 MHz to 1 GHz. Reflecting excellent magnetomachanical couping properties of films, high frequency impedance was subject to change sensitively by a strain : a change in impe-dance of 39% was observed at 200 MHz applied a strain of 224$\times$10\ulcorner. To determine a optimum shape of micro-patterned films, film impedance was analyzed by virtue of its constitutive components of resis-tance and reactance. Result was shown that reduction of the resistance term(hence increase of resultant reactance term) of impedance is more effective for enhancing the strain sensitivity of films at relatively low frequency range.
This paper discusses the effect of high temperatures (Ts) on the compressive strength and stress-strain curve of recycled fine aggregate concrete (RFAC), based on the experimental results. A total of 90 prisms (100 mm×100 mm×300 mm) were tested. The results show that the compressive strength and elastic modulus of RFAC specimens decreased significantly with increasing T values. As T increased, the strain corresponding to peak stress decreased first when T<200℃ and then increased afterwards. With increasing T values, the stress-strain curves became flat gradually, the peak stress dropped gradually, and εp decreased when T<200℃ and increased in the T range of 400-800℃. A stress-strain relations for RFAC exposed to high Ts is proposed, which agree quite well with the test results and may be used to practical applications.
The mechanical behavior of a commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) is investigated at high temperature Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) compression test with high strain-rate. Tests are performed over a temperature range from room temperature to 1000$^{\circ}C$ with interval of 200$^{\circ}C$ and a strain-rate range of 1900 ∼ 2000/sec. The true flow stress-true strain relations depending on temperature are achieved in these tests. For construction of constitutive equation from the true flow stress-true strain relation, parameters for the Johnson-Cook constitutive equation is determined. And the modified Johnson-Cook equation is used for investigation of behavior of flow stress in vicinity of recrystalization temperature. The Modified Johnson-Cook constitutive equation is more suitable in expressing the dynamic behavior of a CP-Ti at high temperature, i.e. about recrystalization temperature.
An automated surface-strain measurement system, named ASIAS, was developed by using the image processing and stereo vision techniques in the previous studies by the corresponding author and his coworkers. This system has been upgraded mainly to improve the accuracy through image enhancement, sub-pixel measurement, surface smoothing, etc., since the first version was released. The present study has still more improved the convenience of users as well as the accuracy of measurement by processing high resolution images 8 mega pixels or more which can be easily obtained from a portable digital steal camera. It is proved that high resolution image processing greatly decreases the measurement error and gives strain data without considerable deterioration of accuracy even when the deformed grids to be measured and the master grids for camera calibration are captured together in the same image, making the whole process of strain measurement much simpler.
This paper presents the characteristics of Ta-N thin-film strain gauges as high-temperature strain gauges, which were deposited on Si substrate by DC reactive magnetron sputtering in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere(Ar-($4{\sim}16%$)$N_2$). These films were annealed for 1 hour in $2{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr vacuum furnace range $500{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$. The optimized conditions of Ta-N thin-film strain gauges were annealing condition($900^{\circ}C$, 1 hr.) in 8% $N_2$ gas flow ratio deposition atmosphere. Under optimum conditions, the Ta-N thin-films for strain gauges is obtained a high resistivity, ${\rho}$=768.93 ${\mu}{\Omega}cm$, a low temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR = -84 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ and a high temporal stability with a good longitudinal gauge factor, GF = 4.12.
The characteristics of constitutive equations, for hydrocodes, were Investigated by the comparison between the smoothed particle hydrodynamcis simulation and the experiment of rod impact test which resulted in a deformation history of impacting front where high strain and high strain rate dominate. The constitutive equations used in the simulation Is J-C(Johnson-Cook) model, Z-A(Zerilli-Armstrong) model, and S-C-G(Steinberg-Cochran-Guinan) model. The modification of Z-A model, based on the increased effect of strain-rate hardening, showed better correlation with expriment.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the axial residual stress in multi-pass drawn high carbon steel wire by using FE analysis and XRD. When FE analysis is applied to evaluate the residual stress in drawn wire of multi-pass drawing process, obtaining the reliable effective stress-strain curve at high strain is very important. In this study, a model, which can express the reliable effective stress-strain curve at high strain, is introduced based on the Bridgman correction and tensile test for multi-pass drawn high carbon steel wires. By using the introduced model, FE analysis was carried out to evaluate the axial residual stress in the drawn wires. Finally, the effectiveness of the FE analysis with the introduced stress-strain relation was verified by the measurement of residual stress in the drawn wires through XRD. As a result, the evaluated residual stress of FE analysis shows good agreement with the measured residual stress.
This paper is concerned with the material properties of functional high explosive(FHX) simulant at various strain rates ranging from $10^{-4}/sec$ to $10^1/sec$. Material properties of FHX at high strain rates are important in prediction of deformation modes of FHX in a warhead which undergoes dynamic loading. Inert FHX stimulant which has analogous mechanical properties with FHX was utilized for material tests due to safety issues. Uniaxial tensile tests at quasi-static strain rates ranging from $10^{-4}/sec$ to $10^{-2}/sec$ and intermediate strain rates ranging from $10^{-1}/sec$ to $10^1/sec$ were conducted with JANNAF specimen using a tensile testing machine, INTRON 5583, and developed high speed material testing machine, respectively. Uniaxial compressive tests at quasi-static strain rates and intermediate strain rates were conducted with cylindrical specimen using a dynamic materials testing machine, INSTRON 8801. And cyclic compressive loading tests were performed with various strain rates and strains. Deformation behaviors were investigated using captured images obtained from a high-speed camera.
