The common-rail injection systems, as a new diesel injection system for passenger car, have more degrees of freedom in controlling both the injection timing and injection rate with the high pressure. In this study, a piezo-driven injector was applied to a high pressure common-rail type fuel injection system for the control capability of the high pressure injector's needle and firstly examined the piezo-electric characteristics of a piezo-driven injector. Also in order to analyze the effect of injector's needle response driven by different driving method on the injection, we investigated the diesel spray characteristics in a constant volume chamber pressurized by nitrogen gas for two injectors, a solenoid-driven injector and a piezo-driven injector, both equipped with the same injection nozzle with sac type and 5-injection hole. The experimental method for spray visualization was based on back-light photography technique by utilizing a high speed framing camera. The macroscopic spray propagation was geometrically measured and characterized in term of the spray tip penetration, spray cone angle and spray tip speed. For the evaluation of the needle response of the above two injectors, we indirectly estimated the needle's behavior with an accelerometer and injection rate measurement employing Bosch's method was conducted. The experimental results show that the spray tip penetrations of piezodriven injector were longer, on the whole, than that of the solenoid-driven injector. Besides we found that the piezo-driven injector have a higher injection flow rate by a fast needle response and it was possible to control the injection rate slope in piezo-driven injector by altering the induced current.

An experimental study was performed for the combustion-field visualization of the burner which burns the liquid hydrocarbon fuel atomized by an ultrasonic oscillator. Configurations of the flame and temperature gradient were caught by both high-speed camera and thermo-graphic camera, and those images were analyzed in detail through a post-processing. In addition, the fuel consumption was measured using the balance during the combustion reaction. As a result, the consumption of atomized fuel increased with the increasing flow-rate of carrier-gas, but any correlation between the air/fuel ratio and carrier-gas flow-rate was not found at the low flow-rate condition. Also, the combustion-field grew and reaction-temperature rose due to the strengthening of combustion reaction with the increasing flow-rate of carrier-gas and power consumption of ultrasonic oscillator.
Electrostatic precipitator is widely used to remove particulate matters in indoor air and industrial flue gas due to low pressure drop and high collection efficiency. However, it has a low collection efficiency for the submicrometer sized particles. Electrospraying is a potential method to increase the particle charging efficiency, which results in increased collection efficiency. Although particle charging efficiency is highly dependent upon droplet size, the effective measuring method of the droplets is still uncertain. Tap water was electrosprayed in this study, and the images of electrosprayed droplets were taken with a high speed camera coupled with several visualization methods in order to measure the droplets size. The droplet size distribution was determined by an image processing with an image-J program. As a result, a droplet measured by a laser visualization, had a half size of that by a Xenon light visualization. In addition, the experimentally measured droplet sizes were a good agreement with the predicted values suggested by $Fern{\acute{a}}ndez$ de la Mora and Loscertales(1994).

Recently, rudder erosion due to cavitation has been frequently reported on a semi-spade rudder of a high-speed large ship. This problem raises economic and safety issues when operating ships. The semi-spade rudders have a gap between the horn/pintle and the movable wing part. Due to this gap, a discontinuous surface, cavitation phenomenon arises and results in unresolved problems such as rudder erosion. In this study, we made a rudder model for 2-D experiments using the NACA0020 and also manufactured gap flow blocking devices to insert to the gap of the model. In order to study the gap flow characteristics at various rudder deflection angles($5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $35^{\circ}$) and the effect of the gap flow blocking devices, we carried out the velocity measurements using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) techniques and cavitation observation using high speed camera in Seoul National University cavitation tunnel. To observe the gap cavitation on a semi-spade rudder, we slowly lowered the inside pressure of the cavitation tunnel until cavitation occurred near the gap and then captured it using high-speed camera with the frame rate of 4300 fps(frame per second). During this procedure, cavitation numbers and the generated location were recorded, and these experimental data were compared with CFD results calculated by commercial code, Fluent. When we use gap flow blocking device to block the gap, it showed a different flow character compared with previous observation without the device. With the device blocking the gap, the flow velocity increases on the suction side, while it decreases on the pressure side. Therefore, we can conclude that the gap flow blocking device results in a high lift-force effect. And we can also observe that the cavitation inception is delayed.

This study was carried out to investigate the injection characteristics of 800 kPa compressed natural gas compressed natural gas (CNG) injector developed in Korea. The CNG injector with multi-holes, employed in this experiment, was designed to inject CNG in the manifold at high pressure of 800 kPa. The spray macroscopic visualization test was carried out via Schlieren photography to study fuel-air mixing process. The fundamental spray characteristics, such as spray penetration, spray cone angle and spray velocity, were evaluated in the constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC) with varying the constant back pressure in CVCC from 0 to 1.8 bar. For the safety reason, nitrogen ($N_2$) and an acetone tracer were utilized as a surrogate gas fuel instead of CNG. The surrogate gas fuel pressures were controlled at 3, 5.5, and 8 bar, respectively. Injection durations were set at 5 ms throughout the experiment. The simulating events of the low engine speed were arranged at 1,000 rpm. The spray images were recorded by using a high-speed camera with a frame rate of 10,000 f/s at $512{\times}256pixels$. The spray characteristics were analyzed by using the image processing (Matlab). The results showed the significant difference that higher injection pressure had more effect on the spray shape than the lower injection pressure. When the injection pressure was increased, the longer spray penetration occurred. Moreover, the linear relation between speed and time are dependent on the injection pressure as well.
The improvement of artificial respiration method has brought about the decrease in mortality of pulmonary diseases patients. Various respiratory curative methods, inclusive of HFOV (High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation), have been developed for more effectual and less harmful management of acute respiratory failure. However, the mechanism of gas transfer and diffusion in a bronchiole has not yet been clarified in detail. As a first approach to the problem, we measured oscillatory flows in a Y-shaped micro-channels as bronchiole model by micro Particle Image Velocimetry(micro PIV). In order to establish the fundamental technique of PIV measurements on oscillatory air flow in a micro-channel, we used about 500-nm-diameter incense smoke particles, a diode laser, a high speed camera including an objective lens, and a HFOV, which is effective technique for medical care of pulmonary disease patients, especially, infants. The bronchiole model size is that parent tube is $500\{mu}m$ width and $500\{mu}m$ depth, and daughter tubes are $450\{mu}m$ width and $500\{mu}m$ depth. From this study made on the phenomenon of fluid in micro size bronchus branch of a lung, we succeeded to get time series velocity distribution in a micro scale bronchial mode. The experimental results of velocity distribution changing with time obtained by micro PIV can give fundamental knowledge on oscillatory airflow in micro-channel.
The mechanism of the hydrogen gas pore formation was investigated in Lost Foam Casting of Al-alloy by reduced pressure test and real casting. The hydrogen gas pick-up was affected by the formed gas during the decomposition of polystyrene in addition to the liquid product. It depended on pouring temperature and a proper temperature of metal front gave the minimum hydrogen pick-up. At a low pouring temperature, the hydrogen went into the melt mainly from entrapped liquid product of polystyrene but pores were formed from the gas as well as the liquid product at a high pouring temperature. The mold flask evacuation down to 710torr decreased the gas porosity down by around 0.4% vol%. The entrapped decomposition product of polystyrene in the melt was observed through the visualization of filling behavior of Al alloy-melt with the high speed camera.

Leading edge extension(LEX) in a highly swept shape applied to a delta wing features the modern air-fighters. The LEX vortices generated upon the upper surface of the wing at high angle of attack enhance the lift force of the delta wing by way of increased negative suction pressure over the surfaces. The present 3-D stereo PIV includes the Identification of 2-D cross-correlation equation, stereo matching of 2-D velocity vectors of two cameras, accurate calculation of 3-D velocity vectors by homogeneous coordinate system, removal of error vectors by a statistical method followed by a continuity equation criterion and so on. A delta wing model with or without LEX was immersed in a circulating water channel. Two high-resolution, high-speed digital cameras$(1280pixel\times1024pixel)$ were used to allow the time-resolved animation work. The present dynamic stereo PIV represents the complicated vortex behavior, especially, in terms of time-dependent characteristics of the vortices at given measuring sections. Quantities such as three velocity vector components, vorticity and other flow information can be easily visualized via the 3D time-resolved post-processing to make the easy understanding of the LEX effect or vortex emerging and collapse which are important phenomena occurring in the field of delta wing aerodynamics.
The effective removal of turbid-inducing particulates and algae-inducing phosphorous was systematically investigated by the variation of physico-chemical parameters such as pH, alkalinity, and coagulant types. Al(III)-based and Fe(III)-based coagulants exhibited high removal efficiency of turbidity and phosphorous at optimal pH ranges of 7~9, in which zeta potential nearly approached to zero. The removal rate of turbidity rapidly increased with the increase of coagulant dosages, whereas the removal rate of phosphorous gradually increased due to an equivalent reaction of phosphorous with metallic ions. The generation of flocs during coagulation was visualized by high speed camera (Motion Scope 2000, Redlake Co.), and the images of singular flocs were captured by optical microscope. The flocs generated by Fe(III)-based coagulant was more compact than those induced by Al(III)-based coagulant, and the settlabiltiy of Fe(III)-induced flocs was superior to that of Al(III)-induced flocs.
