  • The use of satellite remote sensing in maritime safety and security can aid in the detection of illegal fishing activities and provide more efficient use of limited aircraft or patrol craft resources. In the area of vessel traffic monitoring for commercial vessels, Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) which use the ground-based radar system have some difficulties in detecting moving ships due to the limited detection range. A virtual vessel traffic control system is introduced to contribute to prevent a marine accident such as collision and stranding from happening. Existing VTS has its limit. The virtual vessel traffic control system consists of both data acquisition by satellite remote sensing and a simulation of traffic environment stress based on the satellite data, remotely sensed data. And it could be used to provide timely and detailed information about the marine safety, including the location, speed and direction of ships, and help us operate vessels safely and efficiently. If environmental stress values are simulated for the ship information derived from satellite data, proper actions can be taken to prevent accidents. Since optical sensor has a high spatial resolution, JERS satellite data are used to track ships and extract their information. We present an algorithm of automatic identification of ship size and velocity. This paper lastly introduce the field testing results of ship detection by RADARSAT SAR imagery, and propose a new approach for a Vessel Monitoring System(VMS), including VTS, and SAR combination service.

  • Recently, the SAR-GMTI mode is becoming increasingly essential in airborne radar systems. While SAR requires wideband waveforms for high resolution imaging, GMTI requires narrowband waveforms for doppler processing, which makes general LFM waveforms difficult to use for SAR-GMTI. This paper analyses the FJB(Frequency Jump Burst) waveform, which is studied for the SAR-GMTI waveform, and presents the method for the pulse compression and SAR image formation using FJB waveforms. Simulation results show that there is little difference in performances between the FJB waveform and the LFM waveform.

  • The principle and applications of GPR(Ground Penetrating Radear) are familiar to engineering geologists and geophsicists as very attractive technique for continuous high resolution images of the subsurface. However, the main limitation of GPR is obviously related to presence of clayey or silty conductive soils, resulting in complete attenuation of radar signals. This difficulty gives hesitation for the exploration of the deeper targets for example detecting bedrock, particularly in Korean situation that most regions have conductive overburden. In order to prove usefulness of geological survey with GPR in that situation, the technique was tried to investigate depth of bedrock under thick conductive overburden and the other geolocgical informations for the constructionof foundation in the Dongbu apartment site, Kimhae. The reflection patterns on the processed GPR sections are well correlated with the geotechnical units-bedrock, alluvium, landfill unit and their internal layer-boundaries of boring data before GPR survey, except upper contact of bedrock. The isopach maps of the geotechnical units for the 3-D interpretations are made from GPR sections. The maps provided useful geological information that bedrock was distributed as plain and valley with 22~27m depth under alluvium unit (this depth is 5~8 m deeper than drill log) and sedimentary layers subsided and bended along growth fault with NNE strike/15$^{\circ}$SE dip in alluvium unit.

  • A fast-changing agriculture environment induced by global warming and abnormal climate conditions demands scientific systems for monitoring and predicting crop conditions as well as crop yields at national level. Remote sensing opens up a new application field for precision agriculture with the help of commercial use of high resolution optical as well as radar satellite data. In this study, we investigated the multi-temporal spectral characteristics relative to different agricultural land use types in Korea using RapidEye satellite imagery. There were explicit differences between vegetation and non-vegetation land use types. Also, within the vegetation group spectral vegetation indices represented differences in temporal changing trends as to plant species and paddy types.

  • A new optical digitizing system for determining the position of a cursor in three dimensions(3D) and an experimental device for its measurement are presented. A semi-passive system using light intensity modulation, a technology that is well known in radar ranging, is employed in order to overcome precision limitations imposed by background light. This system consists of a charge-coupled device camera placed before a rotating mirror and a light-emitting diode whose intensity is modulated. Using a Fresnel pattern for light modulation, it is verified that a substantial improvement of the signal to noise ratio is realized for the background noise and that a resolution of less than a single pixel can be achieved. This opens the doorway to the realization of high precision 3D digitized measurement. We further propose that a 3D position measurement with a monocular optical system can be realized by a numerical experiment if a linear-period modulated waveform is adopted as the light-modulating one.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method that sequentially estimates TDOA(Time Delay Of Arrival) and FDOA(Frequency Delay Of Arrival) for extracting the information about the bearing and relative velocity of a target in passive radar or sonar arrays. The objective is to efficiently estimate the TDOA and FDOA between two sensor signal measurements, corrupted by correlated Gaussian noise sources in an unknown way. The proposed method utilizes the one dimensional slice function of the third order cumulants between the two sensor measurements, by which the effect of correlated Gaussian measurement noises can be significantly suppressed for the estimation of TDOA. Because the proposed sequential algoritjhm uses the one dimensional complex ambiguity function based on the TDOA estimate from the first step, the amount of computations needed for accurate estimationof FDOA can be dramatically reduced, especially for the cases where high frequency resolution is required. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing TDOA/FDOA estimation algorithms based on the ML(maximum likelihood) criterionandthe complex ambiguity function of the third order cumulant as well, in the MSE(mean squared error) sense and computational burden. Various numerical resutls on the detection probability, MSE and the floatingpoint computational burden are presented via Monte-Carlo simulations for different types of noises, different lengths of data, and different signal-to-noise ratios.

  • Large spaceborne antennas should be lightweight, a factor related to the development costs of launch vehicles. In order to overcome this drawback, a feasibility study of a new carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) named M55J/RS3 is carried out for a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) reflector antenna. In particular, the high resolution of detected images is taken into consideration. To validate the electrical performance, a test of the CFRP specimen is fabricated, and the transmission/reflection coefficients are measured using a standard X-band waveguide. Finally, the effective complex permittivity and effective electrical conductivity are derived from the obtained measured data. By applying the derived conductivity to the simulation of the radiation pattern, antenna gain, and beamwidth-instead of relying on the assumption of a perfect electric conductor-variations in electrical performance are also investigated and discussed.

Sentinel-1 SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar)는 능동형 위성으로 10m의 공간해상도로 제공되기 때문에 기존의 토양수분 전용위성인 SMOS(Soil Moisure and Ocean Salinity), SMAP(Soil Moisture Active Passive) 및 GCOM-W1(Global Change Observation Mission Water) 등 다르게 고해상도 토양수분 산정이 가능하다. 그러나 Sentinel-1 SAR 센서에서는 고해상도 지표 관측 이미지 자료만 제공하며, 토양수분 자료를 직접적으로 제공하지 않는다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 2018년도 Sentinel-1 A/B IW(Interferometric Wide swath) 모드의 VH(Vertical Transmit - Horizontal Receive) 편파 영상과 Sentinel-1 SAR 위성자료 전처리 도구인 SNAP(Sentinel Application Platform)을 이용하여 후방산란계수를 산정하였으며, 산정된 후 방산란계수와 농촌진흥청에서 제공하는 65개 지점의 실측 TDR(Time Domain Reflectrometry) 토양수분의 관계를 이용하여 회귀모형을 도출 및 토양수분 공간분포를 산정하였다.

이에 고도와 지형적 특성을 고려한 PRISM(Precipitation-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model) 방법을 사용하여 고해상도 격자기반의 자료를 생성하였다.

  • Wind LiDAR and Wind Profiler are devices that produce continuous vertical distribution of wind vector in high-resolution data, and their use has recently been increasing. Although the observation and data processing methods of the two devices are similar, differences in wind detection accuracy may occur depending on weather and operation settings. introduce the characteristics of the two instruments and wind calculation methods, and apply the latest instrument verification standards to evaluate their accuracy by comparing them with the wind observed with a radiosonde. Accordingly, a new direction for performance verification following the introduction of equipment and additional necessary complements are presented.
