Signal processing technique of linear frequency modulation-frequency shift keying (LFM-FSK) waveform has been introduced for rear view radars of an automobile. LFM-FSK waveform consists of two sequential stepped frequency waveforms with some frequency offset, and thus, can be used to generate inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) images of rear view target of an automobile. However, ISAR images can often be blurred due to inter-pulse phase errors. To resolve this problem, one-dimensional (1-D) entropies of high resolution range profiles (HRRP) are minimized with the help of particle swarm optimization (PSO). The searching space used in PSO is adaptively adjusted by the use of information on the target's velocity obtained from LFM-FSK waveforms. Simulation results show that the proposed method can generate well-focused ISAR images.

In radar systems, FFT (fast Fourier transform) operation is necessary to obtain the range and velocity of target, and the design of an FFT processor which operates at high speed is required for real-time implementation. The perfect shuffle network is suitable for high-speed FFT processor. In particular, twice perfect shuffle network based on radix-4 is preferred for very high-speed FFT processor. Moreover, radar systems that requires various velocity resolution should support scalable FFT points. In this paper, we propose a 8~1024-point scalable FFT processor based on twice perfect shuffle network algorithm and present hardware design and implementation results. The proposed FFT processor was designed using hardware description language (HDL) and synthesized to gate-level circuits using $0.65{\mu}m$ CMOS process. It is confirmed that the proposed processor includes logic gates of 3,293K.
Recently, ESA (European Space Agency) has launched CryoSAT-2 for polar ice observations. CryoSAT-2 is equipped with a SIRAL (SAR/interferometric radar altimeter), which is a high spatial resolution radar altimeter. Conventional altimeters cannot measure a precise three-dimensional ground position because of the large footprint diameter, while SIRAL altimeter system accomplishes a precise three-dimensional ground positioning by means of interferometric synthetic aperture radar technique. In this study, we developed an efficient SIRAL SARIn mode processing technique to measure a precise three-dimensional ground position. We first simulated SIRAL SARIn RAW data for the ideal target by assuming the flat Earth and linear flight track, and second accessed the precision of three-dimensional geopositioning achieved by the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm consists of 1) azimuth processing that determines the squint angle from Doppler centroid, and 2) range processing that estimates the look angle from interferometric phase. In the ideal case, the precisions of look and squint angles achieved by the proposed algorithm were about -2.0 ${\mu}deg$ and 98.0 ${\mu}deg$, respectively, and the three-dimensional geopositioning accuracy was about 1.23 m, -0.02 m, and -0.30 m in X, Y and Z directions, respectively. This means that the SIRAL SARIn mode processing technique enables to measure the three-dimensional ground position with the precision of several meters.

A linear frequency modulated pulse train waveform can be cost-effective in achieving high range resolution, and thus the synthetic aperture radar may be benefited by using the mixer output of the received signal. However, the image formation process from a mixer output is vulnerable to errors caused by stop-and-go approximation. In this paper, a nadir-looking imaging radar based on time domain correlation is proposed. Furthermore, to prevent the occurrence of ghosting effect in images, antenna placement on a rotating disk is proposed. Simulation results indicate that ghosting effect can be eliminated by employing the proposed antenna placement structure.

Jet engine modulation(JEM) signals are widely used in the field of target recognition along with high-range resolution profile and inverse synthetic aperture radar because they provide specific information of the jet engine. To obtain the number of blades of the jet engine, the chopping frequency proportional to the number of blades must be extracted. In the conventional chopping frequency extraction method, an initial threshold value is defined and a method of detecting the chopping peak is used. However, this detection method takes time depending on the signal due to repetitive detection. Thus, in this study, we proposed to extract the chopping frequency using MUltiple SIgnal Classification(MUSIC) algorithm. We applied the MUSIC algorithm to a given JEM signal to find the chopping frequency and determine the blade number candidates. We also applied the MUSIC algorithm to other chopping frequency extractions to determine the score of the candidate groups. Unlike the conventional detection algorithm, which requires repetitive frequency detection, MUSIC algorithm quickly detects the accurate chopping frequency and reduces the calculation time.

Recently, a FMCW radar is used for the various purposes in the short range detection and tracking of targets. The main advantages of a FMCWradar are the comparative simplicity of implementation and the low peak power transmission characterizing the very low probability of signal interception. Since it uses the frequency modulated continuous wave for transmission and demodulation, the received beat frequency represents the range and Doppler information of targets. Detection and extraction of useful information from targets are performed in this beat frequency domain. Therefore, the resolution and accuracy in the estimation of a beat spectrum are very important. However, using the conventional FFT estimation method, the high resolution spectrum estimation with a low sidelobe level is not possible if the acquisition time is very short in receiving target echoes. This kind of problems deteriorates the detection performance of adjacent targets having the large magnitude differences in return echoes and also degrades the reliability of the extracted information. Therefore, in this paper, the model parameter estimation methods such as autoregressive and eigenvector spectrum estimation are applied to mitigate these problems. Also, simulation results are compared and analyzed for further improvement.

This study derived the Flood-Inducing-Rainfall (FIR) and the Flood-Inducing-Runoff (FIRO) from the radar-gage composite data to be used as the basis of the flood warning initiation for the urban area of Seoul. For this, we derived the rainfall depth-duration relationship for the 261 flood events at 239 watersheds during the years 2010 and 2011 based on the 10-minute 1km-1km radar-gauge composite rainfall field. The relationship was further refined by the discrete ranges of the proportion of the flooded area in the watershed (FP) and the coefficient variation of the rainfall time series (CV). Then, the slope of the straight line that contains all data points in the depth-duration relationship plot was determined as the FIR for the specified range of the FP and the CV. Similar methodology was applied to derive the FIRO, which used the runoff depths that were estimated using the NRCS Curve Number method. We found that FIR and FIRO vary at the range of 37mm/hr-63mm/hr and the range of 10mm/hr-42mm/hr, respectively. The large variability was well explained by the FP and the CV: As the FP increases, FIR and FIRO increased too, suggesting that the greater rainfall causes larger flooded area; as the rainfall CV increases, FIR and FIRO decreased, which suggests that the temporally concentrated rainfall requires less total of rainfall to cause the flood in the area. We verified our result against the 21 flood events that occurred for the period of 2012 through 2015 for the same study area. When the 5 percent of the flooded area was tolerated, the ratio of hit-and-miss of the warning system based on the rainfall was 44.2 percent and 9.5 percent, respectively. The ratio of hit-and-miss of the warning system based on the runoff was 67 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively. Lastly, we showed the importance of considering the radar-gauge composite rainfall data as well as rainfall and runoff temporal variability in flood warning system by comparing our results to the ones based on the gauge-only or radar-only rainfall data and to the one that does not account for the temporal variability.

Since the range and Doppler resolution of the synthetic aperture radar(SAR) image becomes very high, the target detection accuracy can be significantly increased, but the computational burden is also increased. The conventional single-cell based CFAR detector performs the target detection on every single cell basis, thus it causes the serious increment of the computational load. In this paper, the improved two-step MCA-CFAR detector is proposed for the improvement of the target detection as well as the reduction of computational load: the first step is to use the MCA-CFAR, and the second step is to use the single-cell based CFAR detection in the expected target area for final decision. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with the conventional single-cell based CFAR and MCA-CFAR on SAR images.

In this paper, we propose a RF front-end developments for vehicle UWB radar systems. UWB systems have a very narrow pulse width that is below 1ns. Therefore, UWB is designed to have broadband quality of low power several GHz and must coexist with the radio communication system. UWB's advantages include high channel capacity and data rate, because precise resolution for multi-path can easily position estimate and Rake receiver. Also, UWB has low interference because it displays broadband quality of low power. Positioning is made possible by short range accuracy, which can reduce the expense of system design. An RF front-end module is designed using the DCR(Direct ConveRsion) method and is composed in RF for vehicles at a low-cost.

A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system is able to provide all-weather, day-and-night, high resolution imaging capability in the wide area of interest, and thus is extremely useful in surveillance for both civil and military applications. In this paper, the X-band high-resolution spaceborne SAR system design is described with the key design parameters for the mission and system requirement characterized by the small satellite platform. The SAR imaging mode design technique is presented, and the standard imaging mode design results are analyzed with respect to image quality performance. In line with the system requirement, X-band SAR payload and ground reception/processing subsystems are designed and the key design results are demonstrated with the outstanding performance characteristics. The designed small satellite SAR system shows the wide range of imaging capability, and proves to be an effective surveillance systems in the light weight, high performance and cost-effective points of view.
