A failure analysis of ammonia converter which suffered hydrogen attack in two years since its initial operating time was presented. It is constructed from 2.25 Cr.1 Mo steel. Analysis showed that the failure on closing seam weld joint was due to local improper post weld heat treatment (PWHT). Improper PWHT can introduce high residual stresses in thick-walled pressure vessel. High residual stress level in weld joint is very prone to hydrogen attack for any components which are operating in hydrogen gas environment. The repair procedures based on the principle to decrease the residual stress then proposed. The repair was controlled very carefully by applying several nondestructive tests in the each stage of repair. To assure the successful of the proposed repair, after one year since repair time, high temperature ultrasonic and TOFD methods were applied on-stream to this equipment in order to evaluate its post repair condition. The two methods showed good results on the repaired area.

The thermal-hydraulics phenomena in a containment during an accident will necessarily include radiative heat transfer (i) within the gas mixture due to the high radiative absorption and emission of steam and (ii) between the gas mixture and the surrounding structures. The analysis of some previous PANDA experiments (PSI, Switzerland) demonstrated the importance of the proper modelling of radiation for the benefit of numerical simulations. These results together with dedicated scoping calculations conducted for the present experiments indicated that the radiative heat transfer is considerable, even for a very low amount of steam (≈2%). The H2P2 series conducted in the large-scale PANDA facility at the Paul-Scherrer-Institut (PSI) in the framework of the OECD/NEA HYMERES-2 project is intended to enhance the understanding of thermal radiation phenomena and to provide a benchmark for corresponding numerical simulations. Thus, the test matrix was tailored around the two opposite extremes: either gas compositions with small steam content such that radiative heat transfer phenomena can be neglected. Or gas mixtures containing larger amounts of steam, so that radiative heat transfer is expected to play a dominant role. The H2P2 series consists of 5 experiments designed to isolate the radiation phenomena from convective and diffusive effects as much as possible. One vessel with a diameter of 4 m and a height of 8 m was preconditioned with different mixtures of air / steam at room and elevated temperatures. This was followed by the build-up of a stable helium stratification at constant pressure in the upper part of the vessel. After that, helium was injected from the top into the vessel which leads to an increase of the vessel pressure and a corresponding elevation-dependent and transient rise of the gas temperature. It is shown that even the addition of small amounts of steam in the initial gas atmosphere considerably impacts the radiative heat transport throughout all phases of the experiments and markedly influences i) the monitored gas peak temperature, ii) the temperature history during the compression and iii) the following relaxation phase after the compression was stopped. These PANDA experiments are the first of its kind conducted in a large scale thermal-hydraulic facility.
When the pressure at the weak spot established at a certain part of a high pressure vessel or piping system exceeds a design pressure, this weak spot is burst, and the pressurized gas emitted through the weak spot will cause a compression wave system. In this connection, in the present study, an experimental study by using a conventional shock tube facility is performed to estimate the effects of the material of diaphragm, curvature radius and thickness of materials on the valve opening time in diaphragm. Pressure sensor having 500kHz in natural frequency is installed at 35mm downstream of the rupture diaphragm to measure the static pressure history of propagating and being accumulated compression wave. 4 kinds of materials are used as diaphragm that is aluminium, copper, stainless steel and zinc. The diaphragm radii of curvature R are ${\infty}$, 120mm and 60, respectively. And the depth for $90^{\circ}$ groove is 0.04mm. It is found that the smaller the tensile strength and elongation of the rupture diaphragm is, the smaller the radius of curvature of the rupture diaphragm is, and for the same conditions the thinner the thickness of the rupture diaphragm is, the shorter the valve opening time becomes. Also, the tensile strength, elongation and the radius of curvature of the rupture diaphragm for the same conditions are smaller, the maximum pressure rise caused by the coalescences of the compression wave is smaller. Finally the pressure ratio is higher, the valve opening time is shortened and gradient of pressure increment is more steepen.
Reactor containment buildings serve as the last barrier to prevent radioactive leakage due to accidents and their safety is crucial in overpressurization conditions. Thus, the Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.216 has mentioned the global strain as one of failure criteria in the free-field for cylindrical prestressed concrete containment vessels (PCCV) subject to internal pressure. However, there is a limit that RG 1.216 shows the free-field without the specific locations of failure criteria and also the global strain corresponding to only azimuth 135° has been mentioned in NUREG/CR-6685, regardless of the elevations of the structure. Therefore, in order to reevaluate the failure criteria of the 1:4 scaled PCCV, the high fidelity simulation model based on the experimental test was significantly validated in this study, and it was interesting to find that the experimental and numerical result was very close to each other. In addition, for the consideration of the material uncertainties, the Latin hypercube method was used as a statistical approach. Consequently, it was revealed that the radial displacements of various azimuth area such as 120°, 135°, 150°, 180° and 210° at elevations 4680 mm and 6,200 mm can represent as the global deformation at the free-field, obtained from the statistical approach.
Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) launched an intermediate scale steam explosion experiment named Test for Real cOrium Interaction with water (TROI) using reactor material to investigate whether the corium would lead to energetic steam explosion when interacted with cold water at low pressure. The melt-water interaction is confined in a pressure vessel with the multi-dimensional fuel and water pool geometry. The cold crucible technology, where the mixture of powder in a water-cooled cage is heated by high frequency induction, is employed. In this paper, results of the first series of tests ($TROI-1{\sim}5$) were discussed. The ZrO2 jets with 5kg mass and 5cm diameter were poured into the 67cm deep water pool at $30{\sim}95^{\circ}C$. Either spontaneous steam explosions or quenching was observed. The morphology of debris and pressure wave profiles clearly indicates the each case.
Gr. 91 steel is used for the major structural components of Generation-IV reactor systems, such as a very high temperature reactor(VHTR) and sodium-cooled fast reactor(SFR). Since these structures are designed for up to 60 years at elevated temperatures, the prediction of long-term creep life is important for a design application of Gr. 91 steel. In this study, a number of creep rupture data were collected through world-wide literature surveys, and using these data, the long-term creep life was predicted in terms of three methods: the single-C method in Larson-Miller(L-M) parameter, multi-C constant method in the L-M parameter, and a modified method("sinh" equation) in the L-M parameter. The results of the creep-life prediction were compared using the standard deviation of error value, respectively. Modified method proposed by the "sinh" equation revealed better agreement in creep life prediction than the single-C L-M method.
Optical-fiber electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) is a non-contact, non-destructive examination technique with the advantages of rapid measurement, high accuracy, and full-field measurement. The optical-fiber ESPI system used in this study was compact and portable with the advantages of easy set-up and signal acquisition. By suitably configuring the optical-fiber ESPI system, producing an image signal in a charge-coupled device camera, and periodically modulating beam phases, we obtained phase information from the speckle pattern using a four-step phase shifting algorithm. Moreover, we compared the actual defect size with that of interference fringes which appeared on a screen after calculating the pixel value according to the distance between the object and the CCD camera. Conventional methods of measuring defects are time-consuming and resource-intensive because the estimated values are relative. However, our simple method could quantitatively estimate the defect length by carrying out numerical analysis for obtaining values on the X-axis in a line profile. The results showed reliable values for average error rates and a decrease in the error rate with increasing defect length or pressure.
Supercritical fluid has excellent dissolving power for various materials based on low viscosity and high diffusion coefficient and is used as solvents in various chemical processes. However, its industrial application can be very tricky because the design, especially the size of the supercritical apparatus, should be carefully chosen to optimize the cost and the production of supercritical fluidic state. And the first step of the supercritical fluid apparatus design is to choose the appropriate size of the reactor vessel to produce supercritical fluid above its critical pressure and temperature. Therefore, this study aims to analyze thermodynamic behaviors of dichloromethane based on ideal gas, van der Waals, Redlich-Kwong, Soave-Redlich-Kwong, and Peng-Robinson equations of state. The correlation between the volume and pressure of dichloromethane at 200℃ was revealed and it can be used to design the optimized size of the supercritical apparatus for industrial production.
This study investigates the effects of temperatures and strain rates on the strength and ductility of Gr.91 (ASME Grade 91) steel which is widely being used as a heat-resistant material in Generation IV nuclear and super critical thermal power plants. The tensile behavior of modified 9Cr-1Mo (Gr.91) steel was studied for the three strain rates of 6.67×10-5/s, 6.67×10-4/s and 6.67×10-3/s over the temperature range from room temperature (RT) to 650℃. Experimental results showed that at specific combinations of temperatures (300~400℃) and strain rates, serrations appeared in the stress-strain curves. Concurrently, abnormal behaviors such as a plateau in yield strength and tensile strength, a minimum in ductility and negative strain rate sensitivity were observed. These phenomena were analyzed as significant characteristics of dynamic strain aging (DSA). Since this abnormal behavior in Gr.91 steel affects the material strength, it is judged that a correlation analysis between DSA and material strength should be crucial in the design and integrity evaluation of Gr. 91 steel pressure vessel and piping subjected to high-temperature loading.
