The effects of the high temperature gas nitriding (HTGN), tempering and subzero treatment of STD11 steel have been investigated. HTGN treatment was carried out at $1050^{\circ}C$, $1100^{\circ}C$ and $1150^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. in an atmosphere of $1\;kg/cm^2$ nitrogen gas. Tempering and double-tempering were performed at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. The surface layer of HTGN-treated steel appeared the precipitates of $M_2N$, $M_7C_3$ and $M_{23}C_6$ in the matrix of austenite. However, the interior region exhibited martensite with the precipitation of carbides. The nitrogen content of the surface layer appeared ~1.35 wt.%, ~0.83 wt.% and ~0.56 wt.% at the HTGN treatment temperature of $1050^{\circ}C$, $1100^{\circ}C$ and $1150^{\circ}C$, respectively. The surface hardness of double-tempered and subzero-treated steel measured the maximum value of 828 Hv, 960 Hv, 750 HV after HTGN treatment at the $1050^{\circ}C$, $1100^{\circ}C$ and $1150^{\circ}C$, respectively. These hardness value increased above 230~420 Hv compared with the HTGN-treated steel due to the decrease in retained austenite and existence of fine precipitates.

A corrosion resistance and hard nitrocarburized layer was distinctly formed on 310 austenitic stainless steel substrate by DC plasma nitrocarburizing. Basically, 310L austenitic stainless steel has high chromium and nickel content which is applicable for high temperature applications. In this experiment, plasma nitrocarburizing was performed in a D.C. pulsed plasma ion nitriding system at different temperatures in $H_2-N_2-CH_4$ gas mixtures. After the experiment structural phases, micro-hardness and corrosion resistance were investigated by the optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, micro-hardness testing and Potentiodynamic polarization tests. The hardness of the samples was measured by using a Vickers micro hardness tester with the load of 100 g. XRD indicated a single expanded austenite phase was formed at all treatment temperatures. Such a nitrogen and carbon supersaturated layer is precipitation free and possesses a high hardness and good corrosion resistance.
High strength steel is similar to carbon steel in its composition. This material is developed originally for special uses such as aerospace and automobile due to its high strength and shock-free property in spite of lightness. But the chemical attraction of high strength steel is serious, which includes comminution of formation, metalization and strengthening. Machining results in built-up edge between this material and the tool. Especially the work hardening behavior results in tool life shortening, which was caused by temperature generation during machining. In this study, cooling system was made in which liquid nitrogen is supplied to circulate in order to make up for these weaknesses. Machining of high strength steels, which is recognized as difficult to machine materials, was conducted after tool is cooled at -195$\circ$C. Experimental results showed that the tool was cooled down rapidly below -195$\circ$C in about 200 seconds. The tool temperature of machining with cooling system was lowered by 60~95$\circ$C than that of machining in room temperature. The hardness of the surface of chip is decreased by machining with cooling system. And the machining using the cooling system made it possible to increase shear angle, to retain smooth surface on chip without built-up-edge and to get a better roughness.

This paper examines the effect of nitride formation on formability for Cu bearing high strength extra low carbon (ELC) steel sheets. For this purpose, we have investigated the effect of addition of aluminium (Al) and boron (B) on texture and precipitation behavior of the ELC steel during continuous annealing. Mechanical properties and microstructures of the ELC steel sheets were analyzed as well using uni-axial tensile test, electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) technique and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) following pilot rolling and continuous annealing. It has been found that the addition of Al and B increases the precipitation of AlN and BN. What is more, the scavange of solute nitrogen is effective in increasing the formability of the ELC steels. In addition, the Al and B addition improves the aging property of the ELC steel.
The objective of this paper is to determine the effect of process parameters on the behavior of a 18Cr-10Mn-$0.44N_2$ nitrogen steel sample deformed by hot rolling. Compression tests were carried out at high temperatures to determine the flow stresses needed for a finite element(FE) analysis. The strain rate, ranging from 0.1 to $1.0s^{-1}$, significantly affected the flow stress at temperatures higher than $1,000^{\circ}C$. Non-isothermal rolling simulations and laboratory rolling tests were performed with plate specimens 14.5mm thick, 135mm wide and 226mm long. A rolling reduction of 15% per pass leading to a cumulative rolling reduction of 60% was determined as optimal. The extension ratio of 176.5% in the length direction was about 30.4 times greater than the extension ratio of 5.8% in the width direction. Isotropic properties for tensile strength, microstructure and grain size were measured after mock-up hot rolling tests. The results from the mockup tests were found to be in good agreement with those of the simulations.

The nitrogen solubility and nitride capacity of $CaO-SiO_2-Al_2O_3-MgO-CaF_2$ slag systems were measured by using gas-liquid equilibration at 1773K. The nitrogen solubility of this slag system decreased with increasing CO partial pressure, with the linear relationship between nitrogen contents and oxygen partial pressure being -3/4. This system was expected to show two types of nitride solution behavior. First, the nitrogen solubility decreased to a minimum value and then increased with the increase of CaO contents. These mechanisms were explained by considering that nitrogen can dissolve into slags as "free nitride" at high basicities and as "incorporated nitride" within the network at low basicities. Also, the basicity of slag and nitride capacity were explained by using optical basicity. The nitrogen contents exhibited temperature dependence, showing an increase in nitrogen contents with increasing temperature.
The microstructural changes of Fe-20Mn-12Cr-1Cu alloy have been studied during high temperature gas nitriding (HTGN) at the range of $1000^{\circ}C{\sim}1150^{\circ}C$ in an atmosphere of nitrogen gas. The mixed microstructure of austenite and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite of as-received alloy was changed to austenite single phase after HTGN treatment at the nitrogen-permeated surface layer, however the interior region that was not affected nitrogen permeation remained the structure of austenite and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite. With raising the HTGN treatment temperature, the concentration and permeation depth of nitrogen, which is known as the austenite stabilizing element, were increased. Accordingly, the depth of austenite single phase region was increased. The outmost surface of HTGN treated alloy at $1000^{\circ}C$ appeared Cr nitride. And this was in good agreement with the thermodynamically calculated phase diagram. The grain growth was delayed after HTGN treatment temperature ranges of $1000^{\circ}C{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ due to the grain boundary precipitates. For the HTGN treatment temperature of $1150^{\circ}C$, the fine grain region was shown at the near surface due to the grain boundary precipitates, however, owing to the depletion of grain boundary precipitates, coarse grain was appeared at the depth far from the surface. This depletion may come from the strong affinity between nitrogen and substitutional element of Al and Ti leading the diffusion of these elements from interior to surface. Because of the nitrogen dissolution at the nitrogen-permeated surface layer by HTGN treatment, the surface hardness was increased above 150 Hv compared to the interior region that was consisted with the mixed microstructure of austenite and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite.

High temperature and low temperature gaseous nitriding was performed in order to study of the surface hardening and wear properties of the nitrided AISI 410 Martensitic stainless steels. High temperature gaseous nitiridng (HTGN) was carried out using partial pressure $N_2$ gas at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 10 hour, and Low temperature gaseous nitiridng (LTGN) was conducted in a gas mixture of NH3 and N2 at $470^{\circ}C$ for 10 hour. The nitrided samples were characterized by microhardness measurements, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The phases were identified by X-ray diffraction and nitrogen concentration was analyzed by GD-OES. The HTGN specimen had a surface hardness of about $700HV_{0.1}$, $350{\mu}m$ of case depth. A ${\sim}50{\mu}m$ thick, $1,250HV_{0.1}$ hard nitrided case formed at the surface of the AISI 410 steel by LTGN, composed nitrogen supersaturated expanded martensite and ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{24}N_{10}$ iron nitrides. Additionally, the results of the wear tests, carried out LTGN specimen was low friction coefficient and high worn mass loss of ball. The increase in wear resistance can be mainly attributed to the increase in hardness and to the lattice distortion caused by higher nitrogen concentration.

This paper aims to investigate cyclic plasticity of a new type of high-performance austenitic stainless steel with both high strength and high ductility. The new stainless steel termed as QN1803 has high nitrogen and low nickel, which leads to reduction of cost ranging from 15% to 20%. Another virtue of the new material is its high initial yield strength and tensile strength. Its initial yield strength can be 40% to 50% higher than conventional stainless steel S30408. Elongation of QN1803 can also achieve approximately 50%, which is equivalent to the conventional one. QN1803 also has a corrosion resistance as good as that of S30408. In this paper, both experimental and numerical studies on the new material were conducted. Full-range true stress-true strain relationships under both monotonic and cyclic loading were obtained. A cyclic plasticity model based on the Chaboche model was developed, where a memory surface was newly added and the isotropic hardening rule was modified. A user-defined material subroutine was written, and the proposed cyclic plasticity model can well evaluate full-range hysteretic properties of the material under various loading histories.
