We study chromospheric oscillations including umbral flashes and running penumbral waves in a sunspot using scanning spectroscopy in H-alpha and Ca II 8542A, with the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) at the 1.6 meter New Solar Telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory. A bisector method is applied to spectral observations to construct chromospheric Doppler velocity maps. Temporal sequence analysis of these shows enhanced high-frequency oscillations inside the sunspot umbra in both lines. Their peak frequency gradually decreases outward from the umbra. The oscillation power is found to be associated with magnetic-field strength and inclination, with different relationships in different frequency bands.
Dynamic characteristics of combustion occurring in various combustion devices have been extensively studied since most of high-performance combustion devices are susceptible to hazardous, unstable combustion that deteriorates combustor's lifetime. One of the most severe unstable combustion phenomena is high-frequency combustion instability in which heat release fluctuations from combustion are coupled to resonant modes of the combustor. Here in this study, characteristics of high-frequency combustion instabilities observed in three different combustion devices have been presented. Lean-premixed combustion instability occurs mainly due to equivalence ratio fluctuations which induce large heat release oscillations at lean conditions. Liquid-fueled combustion also shows high-frequency instability from energy coupling between pressure and heat release oscillations.
The paper presents methodologies and results concerning one- and two-dimensional numerical modeling of radio frequency oscillations in a coaxial transmission line fed with a short pulse of electric current. The line is partially filled with a ferrite material, magnetized longitudinally close to saturation. The 2D model has permitted analyzing, for the first time in the art, the spatial structure and dynamics of the wave field within the radially non-uniform cross-section planes of the non-linear and dispersive guiding structure. This opens ways for optimizing size parameters of the line and the extent to which it is filled with the ferromagnetic material, thus increasing the line's electric strength and intensity of the r.f. oscillations.
This study has been mainly motivated to numerically investigate the transient flame response to pressure oscillations in the gaseous hydrogen - liquid oxygen flames at supercritical pressures. The present analysis is based on the real-fluid transient flamlet model and the flame field is acoustically perturbed only by the sinewave oscillations in the frequency range from 1,000 Hz to 5,000 Hz. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the flame response characteristics and the transient flamelet response associated with the high-frequency combustion instability in the liquid propellant rocket engines.
Combustion-driven oscillations in a surface burner have been investigated to clarify their characteristics. A model combustor is made and the oscillation frequencies are measured for various dimensions of the combustor. It is found that there are two modes of oscillations; one is the 'acoustic mode' at high frequencies, associated with the acoustic mode of the combustion system and the other is the 'combustion mode' at low frequencies around 100 Hz, associated with the instability of the flame. Acoustic mode is excited when the surface burner is placed where the phase of particle velocity leads that of acoustic pressure by $90^{\circ}$, for all the combustion conditions. Combustion mode is driven at high combustion rate by the lift of unstable flame near the lower limit of the combustible equivalence ratio. Combustion mode is greatly influenced by the inlet temperature of the premixed gas. When the inlet temperature is very high, the combustion mode does not occur.
In the article 16 of the domestic rolling stock crashworthiness regulations, the collision acceleration level during collision accidents should remain under the maximum 7.5g and the average 5g. By the way, the accelerations obtained in crash simulations and tests contain many kinds of high frequency components due to numerical oscillations or noisy signals. So, this paper aims to develop reliable post-processing methods to filter high frequency oscillations and extract the rigid body motions of passenger rail cars. For this study we used the 1-dimensional dynamic model of KHST (Korean high-speed train), and evaluated acceleration data at the driver's area in the first power car and the passenger area in the following trailer.
SiC MOSFETs have been used to improve system efficiency in high frequency converters due to their extremely high switching speed. However, this can result in undesirable parasitic oscillations in practical systems. In this paper, models of the key components are introduced first. Then, theoretical formulas are derived to calculate the switching oscillation frequencies after full turn-on and turn-off in clamped inductive circuits. Analysis indicates that the turn-on oscillation frequency depends on the power loop parasitic inductance and parasitic capacitances of the freewheeling diode and load inductor. On the other hand, the turn-off oscillation frequency is found to be determined by the output parasitic capacitance of the SiC MOSFET and power loop parasitic inductance. Moreover, the shifting regularity of the turn-off maximum peak voltage with a varying switching speed is investigated on the basis of time domain simulation. The distortion of the turn-on current is theoretically analyzed. Finally, experimental results verifying the above calculations and analyses are presented.
For MHz-class high frequency inverter in wireless power transfer applications, the voltage/current surges can be occurred in power stage when driving on the inverter. And also, the high-frequency oscillations can be produced at a high switching frequency due to the parasitic elements. The voltage and current stresses of the switching devices lead to the switching losses. The efficiency of the high frequency inverter will be reduced. And the inverter circuit with the sudden voltage and current fluctuations also generates the noise such as the EMI. Zero voltage, zero current switching technique can be used to reduce the switching loss and the noise. The high power density and high efficiency can be obtained. In this paper, the high-frequency inverter for short-range wireless power transfer applications was discussed. The feasible inverter circuit is analyzed in the circuit operating characteristics and the results are verified by the simulation.
The terrestrial nightglow emission in near infrared region were obtained using a Fourier Transform Spectrometer(FTS) at Esrange, Sweden ($67.90^{\circ}$N, $21.10^{\circ}$E) and the OH(4- 2) bands were used to derive temperature and airglow emission rate of the upper mesosphere. For this study, we analyzed data taken during winter of 2001/2002 and performed spectral analysis to retrieve wave information. From the Lomb-Scargle spectral analysis to the measured temperatures, dominant oscillations at various periods near tidal frequency are found. Most commonly observed waves are 4, 6, and 8 hour oscillations. Because of periods and persistence, the observed oscillations are most likely of tidal origin, i.e. zonally symmetric tides which are known to have their maximum amplitudes at the pole.
