Study on Vibration Energy Harvesting with Small Coil for Embedded Avian Multimedia Application

  • We have developed an electromagnetic generator to bury in subcutaneous area or abdominal cavity of the birds. As we can't use a solar battery, it is extremely difficult to supply a power for subcutaneous implantation such as biosensors under the skin due to the darkness environment. We are aiming to test the antigen-antibody reaction to confirm an avian influenza. One solution is a very small generator with the electromagnetic induction coil. We attached the developed coil to chickens and pheasants and recorded the electric potential generated as the chicken walked and the pheasant flew. The electric potential generated with physical simulator is equal to or exceeds the 7 V peak-to-peak at maximum by 560/min of flapping of wings. Even if we account for the junction voltage of the diode (200 mV), efficient charging of the double-layer capacitor is possible with the voltage doubler rectifier. If we increase the voltage, other problems arise, including the high-voltage insulation of the double-layer capacitor. For this reason, we believe the power generated to be sufficient for subcutaneous area of birds. The efficiency, magnetic 2 mm in length and coil 15mm in length, if axial direction is rectified, the magnetic flux density given to the coil could calculated to 7.1 % and generated power average 0.47mW. The improvements in size and wire insulation are expected in the future.

  • To satisfy the demand for small size, light weight. high density power supply, the switching frequency of DC/DC converters has been increased. The PWM control of the conventional SMPS have a switching frequency that a level of the conducted noise spectra contribute to switching frequency band. So the electronic equipment is not only affected from that but is restricted to internal regulation like CISPR, FCC, and VDE. In this paper, we analyzed Bi-FM. Bi-FM is two fixed switching frequency with a modulation frequency. So emission spectrum of Bi-FM control signal is spreaded and spectral power level is reduced. In this paper, we analyze the spectral analysis of Bi-FM control signal and the spectral comparison between the PWM control and Bi-FM control. And we confirm that reduced the spectrum power level through simulation using Pspice and experiment.

  • In this paper, the design method of asynchronous nonvolatile memory module that can efficiently process and store large amounts of data without loss when the power turned off is proposed and implemented. PSRAM, which takes advantage of DRAM and SRAM, was used for data processing, and NAND flash memory was used for data storage and backup. The problem of a lot of signal interference due to the characteristics of memory devices was solved through PCB design using high-density integration technology. In addition, a boost circuit using the super capacitor of 0.47F was designed to supply sufficient power to the system during the time to back up data when the power is off. As a result, an asynchronous nonvolatile memory module was designed and implemented that guarantees reliability and stability and can semi-permanently store data for about 10 years. The proposed method solved the problem of frequent data loss in industrial sites and presented the possibility of commercialization by providing convenience to users and managers.

  • In recent years, technology for storing a preliminary power or a surplus of photovoltaic energy is required. This technique, as well as store a preliminary energy and improve the reliability of the gird safety. This system can plan a efficient power generation through the flexibility of the power supply from the perspective of not only provider but also user. Accordingly, the realization of the smart grid can be expected. This paper proposes a hybrid PCS using a photovoltaic and a lithium-polymer battery with the characteristics of high density energy. The main energy source of a hybrid PCS is a photovoltaic, grid and the auxiliary energy source is a lithium-polymer battery. The operation of a proposed system in this paper is verified with simulation and experimental results.

An analysis on Flicker Phenomenon of a Fluorescent lights for the commercial operating EMU (영업운행 전동차 객실형광등의 플리커(Flicker) 현상에 관한 분석 연구)

  • Generally, there are two types of main factors to affect output power quality of a auxiliary power supply an EMU(electric multiple unit). One is a voltage flicker by amplitude modulation of short time and air compressors. The other is repetitive motion of large capacity motor such as air compressors, HVAC unit etc. in main factors. This paper compared two kinds of fluorescent lamp, 32W (after remodeling interior) and 40W(before remodeling interior) and measured the light output varying input power(AC220V) for a flicker phenomenon related power supply of lamps in EMU. Also, we analyzed a flicker considering EMU operating time and density in order to grasp main factors of a load change to cause a voltage change. As a results of test, a 40W fluorescent lamp was more insensitive with 20.26% degree an eye recognition degree sides about changes of the input power and lower with 19.9% voltage side generating flicker compare with fluorescent lamp 32W. Also, we confirmed the fact which the fluorescent lamp flicker was generated by varying fluorescent lamp output voltage when the commercial EMU was in high driving density and at the busy time. Additionally, we confirmed the frequency band which an EMU passenger could feel sensitively blinking of a fluorescent lamp was visually $8Hz{\sim}15Hz$.

A SMALL MODULAR REACTOR DESIGN FOR MULTIPLE ENERGY APPLICATIONS: HTR50S

  • HTR50S is a small modular reactor system based on HTGR. It is designed for a triad of applications to be implemented in successive stages. In the first stage, a base plant for heat and power is constructed of the fuel proven in JAEA's $950^{\circ}C$, 30MWt test reactor HTTR and a conventional steam turbine to minimize development risk. While the outlet temperature is lowered to $750^{\circ}C$ for the steam turbine, thermal power is raised to 50MWt by enabling 40% greater power density in 20% taller core than the HTTR. However the fuel temperature limit and reactor pressure vessel diameter are kept. In second stage, a new fuel that is currently under development at JAEA will allow the core outlet temperature to be raised to $900^{\circ}C$ for the purpose of demonstrating more efficient gas turbine power generation and high temperature heat supply. The third stage adds a demonstration of nuclear-heated hydrogen production by a thermochemical process. A licensing approach to coupling high temperature industrial process to nuclear reactor will be developed. The low initial risk and the high longer-term potential for performance expansion attract development of the HTR50S as a multipurpose industrial or distributed energy source.

AC Loss Characteristic Analysis of Superconducting Power Cable for High Capacity Power Transmission (대용량 전력 전송을 위한 초전도 전력케이블의 교류손실 특성 분석)

  • In order to facilitate the supply of gradually increasing power demand, it is also necessary to increase the number of power cables for power transmission as well as generation facilities. However, the expansion of electric power cables for supplying power to most urban areas requires a space for installation of additional cables, and the space for installing cables in domestic downtown areas is insufficient at present. The superconducting power cable, which can transmit more power with the same size, has emerged as an alternative to overcome the insufficient cable installation space. However, superconducting power cables, which have the advantage of large power transmission, have some losses in the AC (Alternating Current) system. Therefore, the design and analysis of AC losses are essential to introduce superconducting power cables in AC power transmission systems. In this paper, we analyze the AC loss of various superconducting power cables and consider the actual superconducting power cables and their application to the system. Although there is a theoretical calculation method of AC loss for single superconducting wire, it is not easy to calculate AC loss of superconducting power cable with large number. Therefore, the authors intend to analyze various kinds of superconducting power cable AC loss by using electromagnetic finite element analysis considering E-J (Electric field-Current density) characteristics of superconductivity. The analysis of the AC loss characteristics of the superconducting power cable will be an important factor in the design and development of the superconducting power cable to be applied to the actual system.

Conceptual design study on Plutonium-238 production in a multi-purpose high flux reactor

  • Plutonium-238 has always been considered as the one of the promising radioisotopes for space nuclear power supply, which has long half-life, low radiation protection level, high power density, and stable fuel form at high temperatures. The industrial-scale production of 238Pu mainly depends on irradiating solid 237NpO2 target in high flux reactors, however the production process faces problems such as large fission loss and high requirements for product quality control. In this paper, a conceptual design study of producing 238Pu in a multi-purpose high flux reactor was evaluated and analyzed, which includes a sensitivity analysis on 238Pu production and a further study on the irradiation scheme. It demonstrated that the target structure and its location in the reactor, as well as the operation scheme has an impact on 238Pu amount and product quality. Furthermore, the production efficiency could be improved by optimizing target material concentration, target locations in the core and reflector. This work provides technical support for irradiation production of 238Pu in high flux reactors.

  • 펄스파워기술은 저장된 전자에너지를 시공간적으로 압축 중첩하여 극히 짧은 시간안에 대전력을 발생시켜 좁은 공간에 에너지를 집중 공급하는 기술이다. 여기에는 에너지를 저장하는 충전장치에 대한 기술과, 빠른 시간에 에너지를 방출하는 스위칭기술, 파형을 성형하는 펄스포밍 네트워크 기술등을 포함하며, 이를 이용한 응용기술로 플라즈마건, 이온빔 가속장치, 펄스성형용접, 수처리 발라스트, 파암장비, 코일건, 레일건 등이 있으며, 이 응용분야에 오래전부터 이용되어 왔다. 이러한 분야에 적용되는 펄스전원장치는 이동성이 용이해야 하고, 부피 또한 작은 구조를 가져야 한다. 본 논문은 고집적화 펄스전원장치의 츠로토 타입 설계, 제작, 실험에 관한 논문으로 그 중 펄스성형을 이뤄내는 인덕터에 대한 성능 실험 결과를 위주로 한다.

새로운 과학기술정책 패러다임 모색과 정책방향: 양에서 질적 발전으로

  • This paper suggests a new paradigm of science and technology (S&T) policy for the purpose of the new national development that pursues not the scale expansion of a industrial production but the qualitative enhancement of industrial and S&T comparativeness. The new S&T policy paradigm includes new policy directions such as the density increasement of high quality- brain power and the energy supply for crossing the threshold from imitative R&D to creative R&D. Also, this paper argues that it is necessary not only to acquire the support of the local S&T community and policy-makers on the new S&T policy paradigm, but also to develop and implement policy measures in details on the basis of the new paradigm suggested by the paper.
