Investigation into Development of Injection Mould with High Cooling Characteristics Using Direct Metal RP Technology (직접식 금속 쾌속조형 공정을 이용한 고 냉각 특성 사출 성형 금형 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate into the development of injection mould with high cooling characteristics using a direct metal RP technology. In order to manufacture the injection mould with a high cooling rate, three-dimensional conformal cooling channels have been generated in the mould. DMT process, which is one of direct metal RP technologies, has been utilized to directly manufacture the metallic mould with three-dimensional conformal cooling channels. In order to examine the performance of the designed mould, injection molding tests have been carried out. The results of the experiments have been shown that a cooling time and the injection time of the proposed mould are reduced by the factor of five and two times in comparison with the injection mould with linear cooling channels.

  • The important problem in high speed spindle is to reduce and minimize the thermal effect by motor and bearing. This paper presents the thermal characteristic analysis for a high speed spindle with and without cooling at the rear part, considering the viscosity and the flow rate of cooling oil. A high speed spindle is composed of angular contact ceramic ball bearings, high speed built-in motor, oil jacket cooling and so on. The thermal analyses of high speed spindle need to minimize the thermal effect and maximize the cooling effect and they are carried out under the various cooling conditions. Heat generations of the bearing and the high speed motor are estimated from the theoretical and experimental data. This result can be applied to the design and manufacture of a high speed motor spindle.

  • Injection molding is a cyclic process comprising of cooling phase as the largest part of this cycle. Providing efficient cooling in lesser cycle times is of significant importance in the molding industry. Recently, lots of researches have been done for rapid cooling of a hot-spot area using CO2 in injection molding. The CO2 flows under high pressure through small, flexible capillary tubes to the point of use, where it expands to create a snow and gas mixture at a temperature of -79℃. The gaseous CO2 removes heat from the mold and releases it into the atmosphere. In this paper, a CO2 cooling module was applied to an injection mold in order to cool a large area cavity uniformly and quickly, and the cooling performance of the injection mold was investigated. The product was a high-curvature molded part with a molding area of 300x100mm. Heat cartridges were installed in a stationary mold, and CO2 cooling module was inserted inside a movable mold. Through structural analysis, it was confirmed that the maximum deformation of mold with CO2 cooling module was 0.09mm. A CO2 feed system with a heat exchanger was used for cooling experiments. The CO2 was injected into the holes on both sides of the supply pipe of the cooling module and discharged through hexagon blocks to cool the mold. It took 5.8 seconds to cool the mold from an average temperature of 140℃ to 70℃. Through the experiment using CO2 cooling module, it was found that a cooling rate of up to 12.98℃/s and an average of 10.18℃/s could be achieved.

  • In this paper, I introduce Phase-Change Cooling for thermal management of high power devices that can be applied to High Power Laser and Electric Propulsion Systems which are composed of multiple distributed superheat sources. Phase-Change Cooling can be good used to efficient cooling of their heat sources. Phase-Change Cooling has extremely high efficiency of two-phase heat transport by utilizing heat of vaporization, relatively low flow rates and reduced pumps power. And I suggest TPI(Thermal Performance Index) which is a quantitative performance index of Phase-Change Cooling for thermal management. I quantify the performance of Phase-Change Cooling by introducing TPI. I present the test results of TPI's changing refrigerant, heat sink and flow rate of the Phase-Change Cooling system through the experiments and analyze these results.

Effect of Cooling Rate on DC Accelerated Aging Characteristics of ZPCCY-Based Varistor Ceramics (ZPCCY계 바리스터 세라믹스의 DC 가속열화 특성에 미치는 냉각속도의 영향)

  • The microstructure, V-Ι characteristics, and stability of ZnO-P $r_{6}$ $O_{11}$ CoO-C $r_2$ $O_3$- $Y_2$ $O_3$-based varistor ceramics were investigated with cooling rate in the range of 2~8$^{\circ}C$/min. The cooling rate relatively weakly affected the microstructure, the varistor voltage, and the leakage current in the V-Ι characteristics. But the nonlinear exponent relatively strongly affected by cooling rate. The cooling rate also greatly affected the stability of V-Ιand dielectric characteristics for DC accelerated aging stress. On the whole, the varistors cooled with 4$^{\circ}C$/fin exhibited the highest performance in the densification, nonlinearity, and stability. Especially, they exhibited a high stability, in which the variation rate of the varistor voltage( $V_{1㎃}$), the nonlinear exponent($\alpha$), and the dissipation factor(tan $\delta$) is -1.4%, -4.9%, and +60.0%, respectively, under DC accelerated aging stress such as 0.95 $V_{1㎃}$15$0^{\circ}C$/12 h)

  • This paper deals with experimental study on thermal characteristics that a cooling fluid is affected to ice ball as being measuring the temperature in storage tank and ice ball governing the rate of heat storage. Distributor was taken as inlet geometry factor. flow rate of cooling fluid which was a brine were 2, 4, and 6LPM, and 8, 10, and 12$^{\circ}C$ in the temperature difference for dynamic factors with respect to three ice ball types(103, 96, 76mm). In case of in flowing cooling fluid, since inertia force is suppressed by lower flow rate the amount of heat was transferred to ice ball by heat conduction high because density difference is high. And in case of larger ice ball, a long-term storage was available because reaching time at steady state is relatively long. consequently, smaller ice ball could be suitable to a short-term storage.

  • Water cooling ducts are installed in the exhaust diffuser for high altitude tests of rocket engine to protect diffuser from high-temperature combustion gas. The mass flow rate and pressure of cooling water is designed to prevent boiling of cooling water in the ducts. Therefore, the estimation of maximum temperature of duct wall is important parameter in design of cooling system, especially pressure of cooling water. The method for predicting maximum temperatures of duct walls with variation of coolant flow rates was derived theoretically.

Optimization of Spheroidizing Annealing Conditions in SCM440 Steel (SCM440강의 구상화 어닐링조건 최적화 연구)

  • The effects of eight types of spheroidizing annealing conditions including annealing temperature, annealing time, cooling rate, and furnace atmosphere on the microstructure and hardeness were determined in SCM440 steel which has been widely used for automotive parts. The well-spheroidized structure and minimum hardness were obtained when the steel was heat-treated at $770^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours, cooled to $720^{\circ}C$ at a cooling rate of $24^{\circ}C/h$, and then kept for 7 hours at the $720^{\circ}C$ followed by air cooling. In order to increase the productivity and to save the manufacturing cost, it is desirable to apply a faster cooling rate to the spheroidizing annealing. It was found that a cooling rate of $100^{\circ}C/hr$ was the fastest cooling rate applicable to the SCM440 steel among the four cooling rates used in this study. The microstructure consisted of ferrite and very fine spheroidized cementite when the steel was annealed for 13 hours at $720^{\circ}C$ below $A_{C1}$ temperature. This was caused by the short annealing time and the retarding effect of Cr and Mo on both the dissolution of pearlite to cementite and coarsening of spheroidized cementite. The steel heat treated in air showed the decarburized layer of about $125{\mu}m$ in thickness at the surface.

  • High-Manganese (Mn) austenitic steel, with over 24 wt% Mn content, offers outstanding mechanical properties in cryogenic settings, making it a potential replacement for existing cryogenic materials. This high manganese steel exhibits high strength, ductility, and wear resistance, making it promising for applications like LNG tanks, flanges, and valves. To operate in cryogenic environments, hot forging and heat treatment processes are vital, especially in flange production. The cooling rate during high-temperature cooling after hot forging plays a critical role in influencing the microstructure and mechanical properties of high manganese steel. The rate at which cooling occurs during this process influences the size of the grains and the distribution of manganese and consequently has an impact on mechanical properties. This study assessed the microstructure and mechanical properties based on different cooling rates during the hot forging of High-Mn steel flanges. Comparing air and water cooling after hot forging, followed by heat treatment, revealed notable differences in grain size. These differences directly impacted mechanical properties such as tensile strength, hardness, and Charpy impact property. Understanding these effects is crucial for optimizing the performance and reliability of High-Mn steel in cryogenic applications.

Effect of Cooling Rate and Temperature on Intercritical Annealing of Medium-Carbon Cr-Mo Alloy for High Strength Cold Heading Quality Wire Rod (고강도 냉간압조용 중탄소 Cr-Mo 합금강의 임계간 어닐링시 냉각속도 및 온도의 영향)

  • The current study deals with the effect of cooling rate and temperature for annealing on medium-carbon Cr-Mo alloy steel, especially for cold heading quality wire rod, to derive the optimum micro-structures for plastic deformation. This is to optimize the spheroidization heat treatment conditions for softening the material. Heat treatment was performed under seven different conditions at a temperature between Ac1 and Ac3, mostly within 720℃ to 760℃, and the main variables at this time were temperature, retention time and cooling rate. Microstructure and phase changes were observed for each test condition, and it was confirmed that they were greatly affected by the cooling rate. It was also confirmed that the cooling rate was changed in the range of 0.1℃/min to 5℃/min and affected by phase deformation and spheroidization fraction. The larger the spheroidization fraction, the lower the hardness, which is associated with the increasing connection of ferrite phases.
