Self-organizing hierarchical ad hoc network (SOHAN) is a new ad-hoc network architecture designed to improve the scalability properties of conventional 'flat' ad hoc networks. This network architecture consists of three tiers of ad-hoc nodes, i.e.. access points, forwarding nodes and mobile nodes. This paper presents a topology discovery and routing protocol for the self-organization of SOHAN. We propose a cross-layer path metric based on link quality and MAC delay which plays a key role in producing an optimal cluster-based hierarchical topology with high throughput capacity. The topology discovery protocol provides the basis for routing which takes place in layer 2.5 using MAC addresses. The routing protocol is based on AODV with appropriate modifications to take advantage of the hierarchical topology and interact with the discovery protocol. Simulation results are presented which show the improved performance as well as scalability properties of SOHAN in terms of through-put capacity, end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio and control overhead.

This paper presents to develop a path planning algorithm combining gradient descent-based path planning (GBPP) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) for considering prohibited flight areas, terrain information, and characteristics of fixed-wing unmmaned aerial vehicle (UAV) in 3D space. Path can be generated fast using GBPP, but it is often happened that an unsafe path can be generated by converging to a local minimum depending on the initial path. Bio-inspired swarm intelligence algorithms, such as Genetic algorithm (GA) and PSO, can avoid the local minima problem by sampling several paths. However, if the number of optimal variable increases due to an increase in the number of UAVs and waypoints, it requires heavy computation time and efforts due to increasing the number of particles accordingly. To solve the disadvantages of the two algorithms, hierarchical path planning algorithm associated with hierarchical particle swarm optimization (HPSO) is developed by defining the initial path, which is the input of GBPP, as two variables including particles variables. Feasibility of the proposed algorithm is verified by software-in-the-loop simulation (SILS) of flight control computer (FCC) for UAVs.
As personal users create and share lots of contents at any time and any places, new networking architecture such as content centric networking (CCN) has emerged. CCN utilizes content name as a packet identifier, not address. However, current CCN has a limitation for content source mobility management. The movement of content sources cause long delivery latency and long service disruption. To solve that, a hierarchical mobility management was was proposed. However, the hierarchical mobility management scheme has still the loss of interest packets and long handoff latency. So, this paper presents the hybrid hierarchical mobility management in mobile CCN environements to reduce both the loss rate of interest packets and the handoff latency. It is shown from the performance evaluations shows that the proposed scheme provides low loss rate of control message.
Autonomous radiation source detection has long been studied for radiation emergencies. Compared to conventional data-driven or path planning methods, deep reinforcement learning shows a strong capacity in source detection while still lacking the generalized ability to the geometry in unknown environments. In this work, the detection task is decomposed into two subtasks: exploration and localization. A hierarchical control policy (HC) is proposed to perform the subtasks at different stages. The low-level controller learns how to execute the individual subtasks by deep reinforcement learning, and the high-level controller determines which subtasks should be executed at the current stage. In experimental tests under different geometrical conditions, HC achieves the best performance among the autonomous decision policies. The robustness and generalized ability of the hierarchy have been demonstrated.
In this paper, a precise trajectory tracking method for mobile robot using a vision system is presented. In solving the problem of precise trajectory tracking, a hierarchical control structure is used which is composed of the path planer, vision system, and dynamic controller. When designing the dynamic controller, non-ideal conditions such as parameter variation, frictional force, and external disturbance are considered. The proposed controller can learn bounded control input for repetitive or periodic dynamics compensation which provides robust and adaptive learning capability. Moreover, the usage of vision system makes mobile robot compensate the cumulative location error which exists when relative sensor like encoder is used to locate the position of mobile robot. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is shown through computer simulation.
In this paper, we Introduce the Unreal Tournament (UT) game and the Gamebots system. The former it a well-known 3D first-person action game and the latter is an intelligent agent research testbed based on UT And then we explain the design and implementation of KGBot, which is an intelligent non-player character deploying effectively within the 3D virtual environment provided by UT and the Gamebots system. KGBot is a bot client within the Gamebots System. KGBot accomplishes its own task to find out and dominate several domination points pro-located on the complex surface map of 3D virtual environment KGBot adopts UM-PRS as its control engine, which is a general BDI agent architecture. KGBot contains a hierarchical knowledge base representing its complex behaviors in multiple layers. In this paper, we explain details of KGBot's Intelligent behaviors, tuck af locating the hidden domination points by exploring the unknown world effectively. constructing a path map by collecting the waypoints and paths distributed over the world, and finding an optimal path to certain destination based on this path graph. Finally we analyze the performance of KGBot exploring strategy and control engine through some experiments on different 3D maps.

This paper addresses a hybrid control architecture for the hospital service robot, SmartHelper. In hybrid architecture, the deliberation takes place at planning layer while the reaction is dealt through the parallel execution of operations. Hence, the system presents both a hierarchical and an heterarchical decomposition, being able to show a predictable response while keeping rapid reactivity to the dynamic environment. The deliberative controller accomplishes four functions which are path generation, selection of navigation way, command and monitoring. The reactive controller uses fuzzy and potential field method for robot navigation. Through simulation under a virtual environment IGRIP, the effectiveness of the hybrid architecture is verified.

This paper presents a facial expression control method of 3D avatar that enables the user to select a sequence of facial frames from the facial expression space, whose level of details the user can select hierarchically. Our system creates the facial expression spare from about 2,400 captured facial frames. But because there are too many facial expressions to select from, the user faces difficulty in navigating the space. So, we visualize the space hierarchically. To partition the space into a hierarchy of subspaces, we use fuzzy clustering. In the beginning, the system creates about 11 clusters from the space of 2,400 facial expressions. The cluster centers are displayed on 2D screen and are used as candidate key frames for key frame animation. When the user zooms in (zoom is discrete), it means that the user wants to see mort details. So, the system creates more clusters for the new level of zoom-in. Every time the level of zoom-in increases, the system doubles the number of clusters. The user selects new key frames along the navigation path of the previous level. At the maximum zoom-in, the user completes facial expression control specification. At the maximum, the user can go back to previous level by zooming out, and update the navigation path. We let users use the system to control facial expression of 3D avatar, and evaluate the system based on the results.

Acoustic signal, which is a main carrier of underwater communication, attenuates along the traveled path heavily depending on the frequency as well as inter-node distance. In addition, since it has a long propagation delay, the conventional medium access control (MAC) schemes requiring complex signaling procedures and accordingly heavy overhead messages would not be appropriate in underwater communications. In this paper, we propose a code division multiple access (CDMA) scheme as a solution for MAC of underwater communication and evaluate the performance. A hierarchical data-gathering tree topology is considered and a staggered wake-up pattern is employed for the purpose of energy saving. As a performance measure, the data rate at each level of hierarchical topology is derived.
