  • In the organization with a hierarchical network queue structure a production function is derived whose input factors are the numbers of servers at nodes and output is the number of served customers. Its useful properties are investigated. Using this production function, the contributions of servers to the number of served customers are studied. Also given an expected waiting time in the system for each customer, the optimal numbers of servers at nodes are obtained minimizing a cost function.

  • The sharing of caches among Web proxies is an important technique to reduce Web Traffic and alleviate network bottlenecks. Additionally, due to emerging network technologies cooperative Web caching among proxies shows great promise to become an effective approach for reducing Web document access latencies. Nevertheless it is not widely deployed due to the overhead of existing protocols such as ICP. We propose iSCSI-based hierarchical web caching scheme which provides more improved performance than existing web caching scheme.

  • In recent years, it is very difficult to construct and expand new infrastructures in a city center because of long-term low growth and lack of space due to urban overcrowding. So, there is a need to study a variety of Retrofitting techniques and urban applications that can lead to sustainable development while efficiently utilizing existing facilities. 'Retrofit' means a sustainable urban retrofitting as a directed alteration of the structures, formations and systems of existing facilities to improve energy, water and waste efficiencies. In this study, we applied a hierarchical network design technique that can reflect the structural hierarchy of a city to study how to retrofit public transportation routes in Seoul. The hierarchical network design means dividing the hierarchy according to the functions of hubs and connecting different hierarchies to form a hierarchical network. As a result of comparing the application results of various retrofitting scenarios of public transport, the differences of daily PKT and PHT by about 2.6~3.2% less than before the improvement address that the convenience of passengers is increased. Therefore, it is expected that if the route planning is established according to the proposed method, it will increase the number of passengers and the operational efficiency by the improved convenience of public transit passengers.

  • In this paper, we propose a hierarchical classifier of object images using neural networks for content-based image classification. The images for classification are object images that can be divided into foreground and background. In the preprocessing step, we extract the object region and shape-based texture features extracted from wavelet transformed images. We group the image classes into clusters which have similar texture features using Principal Component Analysis(PCA) and K-means. The hierarchical classifier has five layes which combine the clusters. The hierarchical classifier consists of 59 neural network classifiers learned with the back propagation algorithm. Among the various texture features, the diagonal moment was the most effective. A test with 1000 training data and 1000 test data composed of 10 images from each of 100 classes shows classification rates of 81.5% and 75.1% correct, respectively.

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a complex metabolic disorder associated with multiple genetic, developmental and environmental factors. The recent advances in gene expression microarray technologies as well as network-based analysis methodologies provide groundbreaking opportunities to study type 2 diabetes mellitus. In the present study, we used previously published gene expression microarray datasets of human skeletal muscle samples collected from 20 insulin sensitive individuals before and after insulin treatment in order to construct insulin-mediated regulatory network. Based on a motif discovery method implemented by iRegulon, a Cytoscape app, we identified 25 candidate regulons, motifs of which were enriched among the promoters of 478 up-regulated genes and 82 down-regulated genes. We then looked for a hierarchical network of the candidate regulators, in such a way that the conditional combination of their expression changes may explain those of their target genes. Using Genomica, a software tool for regulatory network construction, we obtained a hierarchical network of eight regulons that were used to map insulin downstream signaling network. Taken together, the results illustrate the benefits of combining completely different methods such as motif-based regulatory factor discovery and expression level-based construction of regulatory network of their target genes in understanding insulin induced biological processes and signaling pathways.

  • In The matching algorithm for automatic packaging of drugs is essential to determine whether the canister can exactly refill the suitable medicine. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical neural network with the upper and lower layers which can perform real-time processing and classification of many types of medicine bottles to prevent accidental medicine disaster. A few number of low-dimensional feature vector are extracted from the label images presenting medicine-bottle information. By using the extracted feature vectors, the lower layer of MLP(Multi-layer Perceptron) neural networks is learned. Then, the output of the learned middle layer of the MLP is used as the input to the upper layer of the MLP learning. The proposed hierarchical neural network shows good classification performance and real- time operation in the test of up to 30 degrees rotated to the left and right images of 100 different medicine bottles.

  • To improve classification accuracy in this paper, we proposed an algorithm for the chromosome image reconstruction in the image preprocessing part. also we proposed the pattern classification method using the hierarchical multilayer neural network(HMNN) to classify the chromosome karyotype. It reconstructed chromosome images for twenty normal human chromosome by the image reconstruction algorithm. The four morphological and ten density feature parameters were extracted from the 920 reconstructed chromosome images. The each combined feature parameters of ten human chromosome images were used to learn HMNN(Hierarchical Multilayer Neural Network) and the rest of them were used to classify the chromosome images. The experimental results in this paper were composed to optimized HMNN and also obtained about 98.26% to recognition ratio.

  • We earlier suggested a hierarchical regulatory network using defined modeling symbols and weights in order to improve the flux balance analysis (FBA) with regulatory events that were represented by if-then rules and Boolean logic. In the present study, the simulation results of the models, which were developed and improved from the previou model by incorporating a hierarchical regulatory network into the FBA, were compared with the experimental outcome of an aerobic batch growth of E. coli on glucose and tryptophan. From the experimental result, a diauxic growth curve was observed, reflecting growth resumption, when tryptophan was used as an alternativee after the supply of glucose was exhausted. The model parameters, the initial concentration of substrates (0.92 mM glucose and 1 mM tryptophan), cell density (0.0086 g biomass/1), the maximal uptake rates of substrates (5.4 mmol glucose/g DCW h and 1.32 mmol tryptophan/g DCW h), and lag time (0.32 h) were derived from the experimental data for more accurate prediction. The simulation results agreed with the experimental outcome of the temporal profiles of cell density and glucose, and tryptophan concentrations.

  • With the limited frequency spectrum and an increasing demand for cellular communication services, the problem of channel assignment becomes increasingly important. However, finding a conflict free channel assignment with the minimum channel span is NP hard. The innovations are cellular concept, dynamic channel assignment and hierarchical network design. We consider the frequency assignment problem and the base station placement simultaneously. Our model takes the candidate locations emanating from this process and the cost of assigning a frequency, operating and maintaining equipment as an input. Hierarchical network design using genetic algorithm is the first three-tier (Macro, Micro, Pico) model. We increase the reality through applying to Electromagnetic Compatibility Constraints. Computational experiments on 72 problem instances which have $15{\sim}40$ candidate locations demonstrate the computational viability of our procedure. The result of experiments increases the reality and covers 90% of the demand.

  • In this paper, we propose hierarchical inter-domain load balanced QoS routing in a large scale of network. And a scheme of calculating resources'costs for precomputation schemes in hierarchical routing is proposed, and a scheme for selecting a path among multiple precomputed paths is proposed. We also propose a QoS routing scheme for transit and intra traffic in a large scale of domain-based network. For a domain in the network, the routing scheme first precomputes K multiple paths between all pairs of ingress and egress border routers while considering balancing of the expected load then selects paths with the probability of path selection. The routing scheme combines inter and intra domain routings seamlessly and uses the same cost calculation scheme. And these schemes make possible both global network resources' utilization and also load balancing.
