  • This paper deals with a hex-dominant mesh generation using an advancing front method for three-dimensional geometries. Hexahedral and prismatic meshes are generated inwardly by offsetting from initial boundary mesh. When the meshes intersect with each other after offsetting, overlapped meshes are improved by node relocation method. In order to generate conforming mesh, pyramid elements are inserted between hexahedral and tetrahedral elements. Sample meshes fur several geometries are presented and analized to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, the rigid-viscoplastic finite element solutions obtained by MINI-elements based triangular elements and tetrahedral elements are compared with those obtained from numerically well-behaved rectangular and hexahedral elements. The theoretical background of the MINI-elements is introduced in detail and the rigid-viscoplastic finite element formulation is also given. Discussion on the results of the MINI-elements is made with emphasis on the effect of a stabilizer simplifying velocity-bubble coupled terms.

  • Because the cost of performance testing using actual products is expensive, manufacturers use lower-cost computer-aided design simulations for this function. In this paper, we propose using hexahedral meshes, which are more accurate than tetrahedral meshes, for finite element analysis. We propose automatic hexahedral mesh generation with sharp features to precisely represent the corresponding features of a target shape. Our hexahedral mesh is generated using a voxel-based algorithm. In our previous works, we fit the surface of the voxels to the target surface using Laplacian energy minimization. We used normal vectors in the fitting to preserve sharp features. However, this method could not represent concave sharp features precisely. In this proposal, we improve our previous Laplacian energy minimization by adding a term that depends on multi-normal vectors instead of using normal vectors. Furthermore, we accentuate a convex/concave surface subset to represent concave sharp features.

  • This paper proposes a hexahedral mesh generation scheme based on mapping approach and improves the drawback of sweeping algorithm. In order to improve the drawback, the algorithm in this paper generates hexahedral meshes by three dimensional element mapping first. Then hexahedral meshes are equivalent to geometry of the volume by mapping and smoothing. Sample meshes are constructed to demonstrate the mesh generating capability of the proposed algorithm.

  • Various transition elements are generally used for the effective analysis of a complicated mechanical structure. In this paper, a solid-to-beam transition finite element which connects a continuum element and a $c^1-continuity$ beam element each other is proposed. The shape functions of the transition finite elements, which a 8-noded hexahedral solid element fur 3D analysis and a 4-noded quadrilateral plane element fur 2D analysis are connected to a Euler's beam element, are explicitely formulated. In order to show the effectiveness and convergence characteristics of the proposed transition elements. numerical tests are performed for various examples and their results are compared with those obtained by other methods. As the result of this study. following conclusions are obtained: (1)The proposed transition finite elements show the monotonic convergence characteristics because of having used the compatible displacement folds. (2)As being used the transition element in the finite element analysis, the finite element modelings are more convenient and the analysis results are more accurate because of the formulation characteristies of the Euler's beam element.

  • The impact behaviour and the impact-induced damage in laminated composite cylindrical shell subjected to transverse impact by a foreign object are studied using three-dimensional non-linear transient dynamic finite element formulation. A layered version of 20 noded hexahedral element incorporating geometrical non-linearity is developed based on total Langragian approach. Non-linear system of equations resulting from non-linear strain displacement relation and non-linear contact loading are solved using Newton-Raphson incremental-iterative method. Some example problems of graphite/epoxy cylindrical shell panels are considered with variation of impactor and laminate parameters and influence of geometrical non-linear effect on the impact response and the resulting damage is investigated.

  • A new grid-based approach is presented for automatic generation of hexahedral meshes for simulation of plastic deformation in metal forming. In this approach, special enveloping schemes are applied, to eradicate the sources of the degenerate elements that may appear in a generated mesh. The schemes are described in detail, along with a complete procedure for mesh generation. The capability of the approach to deal with an arbitrary, 3-D process geometry is demonstrated through application to a selected forming problem.

  • The deformation of sheet metal due to the residual stress during blanking or piercing process, is numerically simulated by means of a commercial finite element code. Two dimensional plain strain problem is solved and then its result is applied to the deformation analysis of the lead frame. The plain strain element is applied to the 2D problem to observe the Von Mises equivalent stress concentration at the both shearing edges. As the punch penetrates into the sheet material, the stress concentration generated on both edges is getting increased to be the shearing surface. The limits of the punching depth applied to the simulation is 16% and 24% of the sheet thickness for the plain strain element and the hexahedral element, respectively. The hexahedral element and the limit of punching depth were applied to the deformation analysis of the lead frame for the blanking process. The FEM results for the lead deformation were very good agreement with the experimental ones. This paper shows that the coarse mesh has enabled to analyze the lead deformation generated due to the blanking mechanism. This simple approach to save the calculation time will be very effective to the design of the blanking tools in industries.

  • In this paper, new additional nonconforming modes for the improvement of bending behavior in the distorted 8 node hexahedral element and their effective modification method are studied. The rotational degrees of freedom are introduced by using a functional in which the rotations are independent variables. In an element formulation, the same interpolations are used in displacement and rotation fields, but nonconforming modes we applied only in displacement fields. To verify the developed element various numerical tests are carried out and test results show good behavior.

  • In the rigid-plastic finite element simulation of hot forging processes using hexahedral mesh, remeshing of a flash is important for design and control of the process to obtain desirable defect-free products. The mesh compression method is a remeshing technique which enables the construction of an effective hexahedral mesh in the flash. However, because the mesh is distorted during the compression procedure of the mesh compression method, when it is used in resuming the analysis, it causes discretization error and decreases the conversance rate. Therefore, mesh smoothing is necessary to improve the mesh quality. In this study, several geometric mesh smoothing techniques and optimization techniques are introduced and modified to improve mesh quality. Then, the most adaptive technique is recommended for the mesh compression method.
