  • Genetic algorithms are one of the most important methods used to solve the Traveling Salesman Problem. Therefore, many researchers have tried to improve the Genetic Algorithm by using different methods and operations in order to find the optimal solution within reasonable time. This paper intends to find a new approach that adopts an improved genetic algorithm to solve the Traveling Salesman Problem, and compare with the well known heuristic method, namely, Kohonen Self-Organizing Map by using different data sets of symmetric TSP from TSPLIB. In order to improve the search process for the optimal solution, the proposed approach consists of three strategies: two separate tour segments sets, the improved crossover operator, and the improved mutation operator. The two separate tour segments sets are construction heuristic which produces tour of the first generation with low cost. The improved crossover operator finds the candidate fine tour segments in parents and preserves them for descendants. The mutation operator is an operator which can optimize a chromosome with mutation successfully by altering the mutation probability dynamically. The two improved operators can be used to avoid the premature convergence. Simulation experiments are executed to investigate the quality of the solution and convergence speed by using a representative set of test problems taken from TSPLIB. The results of a comparison between the new approach using the improved genetic algorithm and the Kohonen Self-Organizing Map show that the new approach yields better results for problems up to 200 cities.

  • Remarshaling is referred to a preparatory task of rearranging containers piled up in a stacking yard to improve the efficiency of loading. Selective remarshaling is required because the time for remarshaling known as large time-consuming task is not enough to remarshal all containers. In this research, we compare two previous researches in more objectively way: heuristic and genetic algorithm based approaches. In addition, we prove the effect of iterative reselection method on dwindling the gap between plan and execution due to the uncertainty of crane operation during execution. Simulation experiments under realistic uncertainty model show that heuristic approaches which have few computational complexity can cope with the uncertainty well when reselection interval is short, but genetic algorithm based approach has advantages when reselection interval that can ensure appropriate number of evolutions is given because of computational complexity for search.

  • The differential evolution algorithm is one of the meta-heuristic techniques developed to solve the real optimization problem, which is a continuous problem space. In this study, in order to use the differential evolution algorithm to solve the traveling salesman problem, which is a discontinuous problem space, a random key representation method is applied to the differential evolution algorithm. The differential evolution algorithm searches for a real space and uses the order of the indexes of the solutions sorted in ascending order as the order of city visits to find the fitness. As a result of experimentation by applying it to the benchmark traveling salesman problems which are provided in TSPLIB, it was confirmed that the proposed differential evolution algorithm based on the random key representation method has the potential to solve the traveling salesman problems.

  • This paper presents a development of an educational simulator of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and application for solving the test functions and economic dispatch (ED) problems with nonsmooth cost functions. A particle swarm optimization is one of the most powerful methods for solving global optimization problems. It is a population-based search algorithm and searches in parallel using a group of particles similar to other AI-based heuristic optimization techniques. In developed simulator, lecturers and students can select the functions for simulation and set the parameters that have an influence on PSO performance. To improve searching capability for ED problems, a crossover operation is proposed to the position update of each individual (CR-PSO). To verify the feasibility of CR-PSO method, numerical studies have been performed for two different sample systems. The proposed CR-PSO method outperforms other algorithms in solving ED problems.

  • Given a video stream delivering system deployed on a multicast tree, which is embedded in a multi-channel multi-radio wireless mesh network, our problem is concerned about how to allocate interference-free channels to tree links and maximize the number of serviced mesh clients at the same time. In this paper, we propose a channel allocation heuristic algorithm based on best-first search and backtracking techniques. The experimental results show that our BFB based CA algorithm outperforms previous methods such as DFS and BFS based CA methods. This superiority is due to the backtracking technique used in BFB approach. It allows previous channel-allocated links to have feasibility to select the other eligible channels when no conflict-free channel can be found for the current link during the CA process. In addition to that, we also propose a tree refinement method to enhance the quality of channel-allocated trees by adding uncovered destinations at the cost of deletion of some covered destinations. Our aim of this refinement is to increase the number of serviced mesh clients. According to our simulation results, it is proved to be an effective method for improving multicast trees produced by BFB, BFS and DFS CA algorithms.

  • This paper presents a Bluetooth and pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR)-based indoor fusion localization approach (BtPDR) using smartphones. A Bluetooth and PDR-based indoor fusion localization approach can localize the initial position of a smartphone with the received signal strength (RSS) of Bluetooth. While a smartphone is moving, BtPDR can track its position by fusing the localization results of PDR and Bluetooth RSS. In addition, BtPDR can adaptively modify the parameters of PDR. The contributions of BtPDR include: a Bluetooth RSS-based Probabilistic Voting (BRPV) localization mechanism, a probabilistic voting-based Bluetooth RSS and PDR fusion method, and a heuristic search approach for reducing the complexity of BRPV. The experiment results in a real scene show that the average positioning error is < 2m, which is considered adequate for indoor location-based service applications. Moreover, compared to the traditional PDR method, BtPDR improves the location accuracy by 42.6%, on average. Compared to state-of-the-art Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) fingerprint + PDR-based fusion indoor localization approaches, BtPDR has better positioning accuracy and does not need the same offline workload as a fingerprint algorithm.

  • Recently, DDSs(Distributed Database Systems) have been implemented on V AN(V alue Added Network) as we know the amazing expansion of information network. DDS can yield significant cost and response time advantages over centralized systems for geographically distributed organizations. However, inappropriate design can result in high cost and poor response time to maintain the database at each site. In a DDS design, the main problem is how to select proper computer and how to allocate data fragment into a proper site. In this paper, we address DDS design problem of selecting the proper class of computers and the allocating data files on VAN. Also, the formulated model includes two objectives, the waited response time and the investment cost to include their relationship. Specially, the formulation of waited response time is based on M/M/1 queueing system to evaluate more precisely. GA(Genetic Algorithm), a kind of heuristic search method, is developed to search an optimal solution in the proposed design model and we show the simulation result to examine the algorithm performance.

  • This paper presents application of a differential search (DS) meta-heuristic optimization algorithm for optimal operation of a micro grid system. The DS algorithm simulates the Brownian-like random-walk movement used by an organism to migrate. The micro grid system consists of a wind turbine, a diesel generator, a fuel cell, and a photovoltaic system. The wind turbine generator is modeled by considering the characteristics of variable output. Optimization is aimed at minimizing the cost function of the system, including fuel costs and maximizing fuel efficiency to generate electric power. The simulation was applied to a micro grid system only. This study applies the DS algorithm with excellence and efficiency in terms of coding simplicity, fast convergence speed, and accuracy in the optimal operation of micro grids based on renewable energy resources, and we compared its optimum value to other algorithms to prove its superiority.

  • Similarity matching in video database is of growing importance in many new applications such as video clustering and digital video libraries. In order to provide efficient access to relevant data in large databases, there have been many research efforts in video indexing with diverse spatial and temporal features. however, most of the previous works relied on sequential matching methods or memory-based inverted file techniques, thus making them unsuitable for a large volume of video databases. In order to resolve this problem, this paper proposes an effective and scalable indexing technique using a trie, originally proposed for string matching, as an index structure. For building an index, we convert each frame into a symbol sequence using a window order heuristic and build a disk-resident trie from a set of symbol sequences. For query processing, we perform a depth-first search on the trie and execute a temporal segmentation. To verify the superiority of our approach, we perform several experiments with real and synthetic data sets. The results reveal that our approach consistently outperforms the sequential scan method, and the performance gain is maintained even with a large volume of video databases.

  • This paper proposes a heuristic algorithm to efficiently perform line balancing in the PCB assembly line including multiple surface mounters efficiently. Generally, the problems in line balancing are classified into two kinds. Firstly, is the determining of the minimum number of machines required for achieving the desired production rate. Secondly, is the assign of jobs to multiple machines in order to minimize the cycle time which is defined as a maximum among the working times of machines when the number of machines is fixed. In this paper, we deal with the latter. We consider a PCB assembly line, including the multiple surface mounters arranged serially as a target system. Also, the conveyor is assumed to move at a constant speed and have no buffer. Considering that the minimum number of machines required for the desired production rate is a discrete nonincreasing function which is inversely proportional to the cycle time, we propose an optimization algorithm for line balancing by using the binary search method. The algorithm is validated through computer simulation, the results of which show that their shapes coincide nearly with those of optimal line balancing efficiency graphs regardless of the number of components, the performance of surface mounters, and the structure of assembly line.
