  • This paper is concerned with a novel heuristic algorithm for the multi-trip vehicle routing problem with time windows. The objective function is the minimization of total vehicle operating time, fixed cost of vehicle and the minimization of total lateness of customer. A mixed integer programming formulation and a heuristic algorithm for a practical use are suggested. A heuristic algorithm is constructed two phases such as clustering and routing. Clustering is progressed in order to assign appropriate vehicle to customer, and then vehicle trip and route are decided considering traveling distance and time window. It is shown that the suggested heuristic algorithm gives good solutions within a short computation time by experimental result.

  • Two dimensional nesting is a common problem in industries such as the shipbuilding, automotive, clothing, shoe-making, and furniture industries, in which various parts are cut off from stock or packed in a flat space while minimizing waste or unoccupied space. Nesting is known as an NP-complete problem, which has a solution time proportional to the superpolynomial of the input size. It becomes practically impossible to find an optimal solution using algorithmic methods as the number of shapes to nest increases. Therefore, heuristic methods are commonly used to solve nesting problems. This paper presents an expert system that uses a heuristic search method based on an evaluation function for nesting problems, in which parts and stock are represented by pixels. The system is developed in CLIPS, an expert system shell, and is applied to four different kinds of example problems to verify its applicability in practical problems.

  • This paper proposes a heuristic scheduling algorithm to satisfy the customer's due date in the production process under make to order environment. The goal is to achieve the machine scheduling in the transformer winding process, in which consists of parallel machines with different machine performances. The winding is important production process in the transformer manufacturing company. The efficiency of the winding machines is different according to the voltage capacity and the winding type. This paper introduces a heuristic approach in the transformer winding process where the objective function is to minimize the total tardiness of jobs over due dates. The numerical experiment is illustrated to evaluate the performance.

  • Calibration of Engine models is a painstaking process but very important for successful application to automotive industry problems. A combined heuristic and machine learning approach has therefore been adopted to improve the efficiency of model calibration. We developed an intelligent calibration program called ICALIB. It has been used on a daily basis for engine model applications, and has reduced the time required for model calibrations from many hours to a few minutes on average. In this paper, we describe the heuristic control strategies employed in ICALIB such as a hill-climbing search based on a state distance estimation function, incremental problem solution refinement by using a dynamic tolerance window, and calibration target parameter ordering for guiding the search. In addition, we present the application of amachine learning program called GID3*for automatic acquisition of heuristic rules for ordering target parameters.

  • This paper propose a heuristic algorithm based on the Branch-Exchange (BE) method to solve Optimal feeder Routing(OFR) problem for the distribution system planning. The cost function of the OFR problem is consisted of the investment cost representing the feeder installation and the system operation cost representing the system power loss. We propose a properly designed heuristic strategy, which can handle the horizon-year expansion planning problem of power distribution network. We also used the loop selection method which can define the maximum loss reduction in the network to reduce calculation time, and proposed a new index of power loss which is designed to estimate the power loss reduction in the BE. The proposed index, can be considered with both sides, the low voltage side and voltage side branch connected with tie one. The performances of the proposed algorithms and loss index were shown with 32, 69 example bus system.

  • Flowshop scheduling problem is known to be NP-complete. Since the optimization apporach like branch-and-bound is limited by exponentially growing computation time, many heuristic methods have been developed. Total tardiness is one of the criteria that the researchers have recently considered in flowshop scheduling. There, however, are few literatures which studied the general (m machine)-flowshop scheduling under the total tardiness criterion. In this paper, a heuristic scheduling method to minimize total tardiness at the (m machine, n job)-flowshop is presented. A heuristic value function is proposed to be used as a dispatching criterion in initial schedule generation. And the schedule improving procedure, by pairwise interchange of tardy job with the job right ahead of it, is introduced. Illustrative examles and simulated results are presented.

  • Dial-a-ride is the most widely available transit service for disabled persons or seniors in the United States and Europe. This paper studies a static dial-a-ride problem considering multiple depots, heterogeneous vehicles, and soft time windows. In this paper, we apply a heuristic based on clustering first-routing second(HCR) to a real-world large dial-a-ride problem from Maryland Transit Administration(MTA). MTA's real operation is compared with the results of developed heuristic for 24 cases. The objective function of the proposed model is to minimize the total cost composed of the service provider's cost and the customers' inconvenience cost. For the comparison, the objective function values of HCR do not include waiting cost, delay cost, and excess ride cost. The objective function values from HCR are better than those from MTA's operation for all cases. This result shows that our heuristic method can make the real operation better and more efficient.

  • This paper describes a heuristic search technique carrying out collision avoidance for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles(AUVs). Fuzzy relational products are used as the mathematical implement for the analysis and synthesis of relations between obstacles that are met in the navigation environment and available candidate nodes. In this paper, we propose a more effective evaluation function that reflects the heuristic information of domain experts on obstacle clearance, and an advanced heuristic search method performing collision avoidance for AUVs. The search technique adopts fuzzy relational products to conduct path-planning of intelligent navigation system. In order to verify the performance of proposed heuristic search, it is compared with $A^*$ search method through simulation in view of the CPU time, the optimization of path and the amount of memory usage.

  • We propose a new real-time search algorithm and provide experimental evaluation and comparison of the new algorithm with mini-min lookahead algorithm. Many other real-time heuristic-search approached often divide the problem space to several sub-problems. In this paper, the proposed algorithm guarantees not only the sub-problem deadline but also total deadline. Several heuristic real-time search algorithms such as $RTA^{\ast}$, SARTS and DYNORA have been proposed. The performance of such algorithms depend on the quality of their heuristic functions, because such algorithms estimate the search time based on the heuristic function. In real-world problem, however, we often fail to get an effective heuristic function beforehand. Therefore, we propose a new real-time algorithm that determines the sub-problem deadline based on the status of search space during sub-problem search process. That uses the cut-off method that is a dynamic stopping-criterion-strategy to search the sub-problem.
