  • The distribution of exotic weeds in 4 island area such as Baengnyeong-do, Heuksan-do, Chuja-do, and Geomun-do in Korea was investigated. Baengnyeong-do, Heuksan-do, Chuja-do, and Geomun-do have different weed flora, 41 species included 13 families, 32 species included 11 families, 23 species included 9 families and 30 species included 12 families were observed in the 4 islands, respectively. 18 families 70 species were occurred in 4 island. Most troublesome exotic weeds were Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior, Solanum carolinense, Cuscuta pentagona. Occurrence frequency of Conyza canadensis, Erigeron annuus, Dactylis glomerata, Bromus catharticus and Lolium multiflorum were the highest in each island, respectively. Also, result of divided life cycle, annual weeds were 28 species occupied 40% in total, biennial weeds were 21 species (30%) and perennial weeds were 21 species (30%).

  • In this study, the wave power resources at the southern sea of Korea were estimated by using the hindcasted wave data of previous researches. The used data were wave heights, periods and directions which were hindcasted around the Korea peninsular from 1979 to 2003. The spatial resolution of the hindcasted data is $1/6^{\circ}$(about 18 km). In winter, the northwest monsoon increase the wave power, while the wave power around Korea peninsular is very small in spring. The maximum value of the annual mean wave power is about 13 kW/m at Gageo-do, Heuksan-do and western region of Jeju-do, while those at the southern sea of Korea is only 4 kW/m, which is relatively small. The wave power at Korean east sea is lower than that of Korean southern sea. We obtained the wave resources information, in a fine grid, at Gageo-do, Heuksan-do, and western sea of Jeju-do, by solving SWAN model with the boundary conditions of hindcasted wave data.

  • We investigated the flora of Jang-do (Isl.), an island of the Heuksan archipelago, located in Heuksan-myeon, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do and discussed the remarkable plants found there. Thirteen-field trips (total 27 days) were completed from May of 2004 to May of 2013. As a result, we identified the distribution of 423 taxa in Jang-do (Isl.), comprising 104 families, 285 genera, 335 species, 78 varieties and 10 forms. There are a total of 95 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants. The floristic regional indicators are as follows; four taxa of level V such as Impatiens furcillata, four taxa of level IV such as Hosta yingeri, 14 taxa of level III such as Ophioglossum vulgatum, 5 taxa of level II, and 58 taxa of level I. In addition 10 red data plants, 2 vulnerable species (VU) including Calanthe striata for. sieboldii, and 4 least concern species (LC) like Ardisia crenata, 2 not evaluated species (NE) such as Hosta yingeri, were found in the investigated area. An unrecorded species, Fragaria (Rosaceae), was found in a forest of Jang-do (Isl.) for the first time in Korea.

  • We report an Early Cretaceous zircon U-Pb age ($113.9{\pm}1.2Ma$) for the Heuksan-do granite located about 90km from Mokpo offcoast of the southwestern Korean peninsula. At this Aptian/Albian boundary, widespread igneous activities occurred not only in the Korean peninsula but also in the eastern China and Japan. We raise the possibility that the flat-slab subduction and delamination triggered such an episodic igneous activity over the large areas of East Asia.

  • Two marine isopods, Pentias hayi Richardson, 1904 and P. thompsoni Collinge, 1916 were verified as unrecorded species in South Korea. The genus Pentias is reported for the first time in South Korea. These two isopods were collected from Heuksan-do Island and Ulleung-do Island from South Korea, respectively. We provide descriptions of the diagnostic characteristics, illustrations of two species and their partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) for molecular characteristics.

  • Catches, CPUE, fishing season, disc width composition and fishing ground were studied to rebuild skate ray, Raja pulchra resource by the offshore longline fishery in Heuksan-do, Korea. Annual catches and CPUE of skate ray were increased from 2003 to 2010 (CPUE: from 2007 to 2010) continuously. The main fishing season of the skate ray was from December to next May. Disc width at 50% maturity for Raja pulchra by sex were estimated to be 65.83cm, 57.01cm by female and male respectively. The range of disc width was 22.3-112.0cm and the average disc width was 66.9cm, 60.0cm by female and male of Raja pulchra respectively during 2007-2010. Annual average of disc width of female skate ray was decreased from 2007 to 2010. The fishing grounds were formed from the coastal water off Hong-do to the coastal water off Gyeogyeolbiyeol-do, Korea. The center of fishing ground in October was formed in the northwestern coastal water off Gyeogyeolbiyeol-do and separated from that of the other months.

  • We report a unrecorded species, Da-do-sae-u-nan-cho (Calanthe ${\times}$ kibanakirishima F. Maek). It was discovered on Heuksan Island in Jeollanam Province. The species differs from C. aristulifera in the corolla color and the short, wide spur. It is also easily distinguished from the other species of Calanthe by the simple trichomes on the abaxial surface of its leaves and spur.

  • Hitherto 44 species belonging to 19 families of spiders have been reported at Ulreung-do on the East Sea. Korea. The authors have investigated spider fauna, through out the Ulreung-do, during July 25, August 3. 1975 and July 30, August 7, 1980. The foundings were as followings. 1) In this report, 132 species of 74 genera, including 3 undetermined species, belonging to 25 families of spiders are tabulated by the aid of published data and collections of the authors. • We report a new distribution of Sedum kiangnanense D. Q. Wang & Z. F. Wu on the Korean Peninsula. This species was first reported in China and is distributed in Anhui and Zhejiang provinces. We found this species on Hongdo Island in Heuksan-myeon, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do in the Republic of Korea. S. kiangnanense is well distinguished from other species in Korea by 4- or 5-verticillate leaves on the sterile stems and a spatulate leaf shape. We provide its morphological description, detailed illustrations, and a key to related taxa. We have given this species a new Korean name, Ip-kkot-dol-na-mul, which means flower-like leaved sedum.

  • We report a new distribution of Carex foraminata C. B. Clarke on the Korean Peninsula. This species was first reported in China and is distributed in Jiangxi and Zhejiang Provinces. We found this species on Hongdo Island in Heuksan-myeon, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do in Korea. Carex foraminata is similar to the related taxa C. brevispicula G. H. Nam & G. Y. Chung, C. chungii Z. P. Wang, and C. genkaiensis Ohwi in that its achenes are constricted in the middle part. However, C. foraminata is distinguished from C. brevispicula and C. chungii by its pistillate scale apexes, which are acute or shortly awned and by its achene apexes, which are shortly cylindrical; C. foraminata is distinguished from C. genkaiensis by its pistillate scale and achene shape. A precise description, illustration, photographs, and a key to related taxa are provided.
