  • The objective of this study is to introduce the concepts and theories of conditional heteroscedastic volatility models and the news impact curves and apply them to the Korea inbound tourism market. Three volatility models were introduced and used to estimate the conditional volatility of monthly arrivals of inbound tourists into Korea and news impact curves according to the three models. Results of this study are as follows. As the proportion of American tourists occupied a large amount of Korea inbound tourism market, the markets' forecasting is very important. The news impact curves which used EGARCH model (1,1) and TGARCH model(1,1), with data on these tourists to Korea showed an asymmetry effect of volatility. It was common that bad news means that it was estimated more sensitively than good news. From these results, we will notice that American tourists who visited Korea only for tourism are affected by good news. The result suggests that the Korea government and tourism industry should pay more attention to changes in the tourism environment following bad news because conditional volatility increases more when a negative shock occurs than when a positive shock occurs.

  • Jeonse is a unique property rental system in Korea in which a tenant pays a part of the price of a leased property as a fixed amount security deposit and gets back the entire deposit when the tenant moves out at the end of the tenancy. Jeonse deposit is very important in the Korean real estate market since it is directly related to the residential property sales price and it is a key indicator to predict future real estate market trend. Jeonse deposit data shows a skewed and heteroscedastic distribution and the commonly used mean regression model may be inappropriate for the analysis of Jeonse deposit data. In this paper, we apply a Bayesian quantile regression model to analyze Jeonse deposit data, which is non-parametric and does not require any distributional assumptions. Analysis results show that the quantile regression coefficients of most explanatory variables change dramatically for different quantiles. The regression coefficients of some variables have different signs for different quantiles, implying that even the same variable may affect the Jeonse deposit in the opposite direction depending on the amount of deposit.

  • Box and Draper( 19(5) listed some properties of a design that should be considered in design selection. But it is impossible that one design criterion from optimal experimental design theory reflects many potential objectives of an experiment, because the theory was originally based on the underlying model and its strict assumption about the error structure. Therefore, when it is neces::;ary to implement multi-objective experimental design. it is common practice to balance out the several optimal design criteria so that each design criterion involved benefits in terms of its relative "high" efficiency. In this study, we proposed several composite design criteria taking the case of heteroscedastic model. WVhen the heteroscedasticity is present in the model. the well known equivalence theorem between 1)- and C-optimality no longer exists and furthermore their design characteristics are sometimes drastically different. We introduced three different design criteria for this purpose: constrained design, combined design, and minimax design criteria. While the first two methods do reflect the prior belief of experimenter, the last one does not take it into account. which is sometimes desirable. Also we extended this method to the case when there are uncertainties concerning the error structure in the model. A simple algorithm and concluslOn follow. On follow.

  • This study applied choice experiment(CE) method(which is included in the stated preference method) to estimate values of some important attributes(i.e. type of estuary, water quality of river in estuary, water quality of sea in estuary, biodiversity level of estuary) of 4 major river(Hangang, Guemgang, Yeongsangang, Nakdonggang) estuaries in Korea. Although the multinomial logit model(MNL) is generally applied to analyse the CE data, testing for IIA assumption with the Hausman and McFadden test in MNL model shows that the IIA assumption in our data is rejected. Therefore, the heteroscedastic extreme value model(HEV) and the multinomial probit model(MNP) which are not based on the IIA assumption are used to analyse our CE data. As results, the coefficients and the elicited economic values of MNL model are seriously distorted if the IIA assumption is not satisfied in MNL model. The estimation results of MNP model show that the economic values are elicited as 352.3 billion won(95% C.I. 261.1 - 477.8 billion won) for natural estuary, 411.5 billion won(95% C.I. 338.5 - 525.5 billion won) for one grade improvement of river water quality in estuary, 358.9 billion won(95% C.I. 292.5 - 457.0 billion won) for one grade improvement of sea water quality in estuary, and 151.9 billion won(95% C.I. 99.0 - 218.6 billion won) for one grade improvement of biodiversity level of estuary. Therefore, the value of estuary is reached to 2,197.0 billion won(95% C.I. 1,721.0 - 2,879.9 billion won) if any natural estuary in 4 major rivers has good water quality of river in estuary(i.e. 2nd grade), good water quality of sea in estuary(i.e. 1st grade), and good biodiversity level of estuary.

  • In this study, we considered the clustering analysis for stock return traded in the stock market. Most of financial time-series data, for instance, stock price and exchange rate have conditional heterogeneous variability depending on time, and, hence, are not properly applied to the autoregressive moving-average(ARMA) model with assumption of constant variance. Moreover, the variability is font and center for stock investors as well as academic researchers. So, this paper focuses on the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic(GARCH) model which is known as a solution for capturing the conditional variance(or volatility). We define the metrics for similarity of unconditional volatility and for homogeneity of model structure, and, then, evaluate the performances of the metrics. In real application, we do clustering analysis in terms of volatility and structure with stock return of the 11 Korean companies measured for the latest three years.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the determinants of company R&D investment with zero observations by using the data of R&D Scoreboard published by Ministry of Science and Technology(2002). Conventional parametric approach to dealing with zero investments is not robust to heteroscedastic and/or non-normal error structure. Thus, this study applies symmetrically trimmed least squares(STLS) estimation as a semi-parametric approach to dealing with zero R&D investments. The result of specification test indicates the semi-parametric approach outperforms the parametric approach significantly. Moreover, the results of the study provide various implications as summarized below. The R&D investment of IT company is larger than that of non-IT company. The R&D investment has a positive relation to foreigners' investment ratio. The higher degree of financial self-reliance is, the larger the R&D investment is. Firm size variables such as sales amount and the number of workers are positively related to R&D investment. The sales elasticity of R&D investment is larger than one. However, the workers elasticity of R&D investment is smaller than one.

  • Stationary bootstrapping is applied to a Lagrangian multiplier (LM) test to test market microstructure noise (MMN) in financial asset prices. A Monte-Carlo experiment shows that the bootstrapping method improves the size of the original LM test which has some size distortion for conditional heteroscedastic models. The proposed test is illustrated for real data sets like KOSPI index and Won-Dollar exchange rate.

  • Measuring stock market volatility and its determinants is critical for stock market participants, as volatility spillover effects affect corporate performance. This study adopted a novel approach to analysing and implementing GARCH-MIDAS modelling methods. The classical GARCH as a benchmark and the univariate GARCH-MIDAS framework are the GARCH family models whose forecasting outcomes are examined. The outcome of GARCH-MIDAS analyses suggests that inflation, interest rate, exchange rate, and oil price are significant determinants of the volatility of the Johannesburg Stock Market All Share Index. While for Nigeria, the volatility reacts significantly to the exchange rate and oil price. Furthermore, inflation, exchange rate, interest rate, and oil price significantly influence Ghanaian equity volatility, especially for the long-term volatility component. The significant shock of the oil price and exchange rate to volatility is present in all three markets using the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic-mixed data sampling (GARCH-MIDAS) framework. The GARCH-MIDAS, with a powerful fusion of the GARCH model's volatility-capturing capabilities and the MIDAS approach's ability to handle mixed-frequency data, predicts the volatility for all variables better than the traditional GARCH framework. Incorporating these two techniques provides an innovative and comprehensive approach to modelling stock returns, making it an extremely useful tool for researchers, financial analysts, and investors.

  • In Korean professional baseball, attendance is the largest source of revenue for development of professional baseball and the highest concern of professional baseball teams. So, if there is demand forecasting model, it will be helpful for pennant chasers to work out the strategies for drawing attendance. For this reason, this research intends to suggest the model which estimates Korean professional baseball's attendance and uses all usable variables which have an effect on attendance in limited circumstances. We supposed that dependent variable is attendance as well as several independent variables and error term are homoscedastic variance. And then, we compared the models which assume conditional heteroscedastic variance like GARCH and EGARCH with GARCH-t models which use the assumption that error term's distribution follows student-t distribution. In result of that, we could confirm that the models which were made by using GARCH(1,1)-t made estimates the most accurately among the several models considered.

  • This paper analyses the relative efficiency of 13 container terminals based on the data for the period 2003-8 to offer a fresh perspective. There has been abundant empirical research undertaken on the technical efficiency of Busan and Gwangyang port. Most studies have focused on the use of parametric and non-parametric techniques to analyse overall technical efficiency. Here, the framework assumes that terminals use two input to produce one output; the former includes container yard and container crane and the latter container volume. Jarque-Bera indicates that three variables are not normally distributed and the positive skewness shows that all the variables have long right tails. This means there are many small-scaled container terminals. This paper also employs heteroscedastic Tobit model to show the effect of the explanatory variables on the container terminal efficiencies. The Tobit model shows that both container yard and container cranes have positive effect on the container terminal efficiency, but container yard has a higher impact on the efficiency than the container crane.
