  • With the increasing need for intelligent environment monitoring applications and the decreasing cost of manufacturing sensor devices, it is likely that a wide variety of sensor networks will be deployed in the near future. In this environment, the way to access heterogeneous sensor networks and the way to integrate various sensor data are very important. This paper proposes the common system for middleware of sensor networks (COSMOS), which provides integrated data processing over multiple heterogeneous sensor networks based on sensor network abstraction called the sensor network common interface. Specifically, this paper introduces the sensor network common interface which defines a standardized communication protocol and message formats used between the COSMOS and sensor networks.

  • With the rapid development of heterogeneous emerging wireless technologies and numerous types of mobile devices, the need to support robust mobile video streaming based on the seamless handover in Future Internet is growing. To support the seamless handover, several IP-based mobility management protocols such as Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6), fast handover for the MIPv6 (FMIPv6), Hierarchical MIPv6 (HMIPv6) and Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) were developed. However, MIPv6 depreciates the Quality-of-Service (QoS) and FMIPv6 is not robust for the video services in heterogeneous emerging wireless networks when the Mobile Node (MN) may move to another visited network in contrast with its anticipation. In Future Internet, the possibility of mobile video service failure is more increased because mobile users consisting of multiple wireless network interfaces (WNICs) can frequently change the access networks according to their mobility in heterogeneous wireless access networks such as 3Generation (3G), Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi), Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax) and Bluetooth co-existed. And in this environment, seamless mobility is coupled according to user preferences, enabling mobile users to be "Always Best Connected" (ABC) so that Quality of Experience is optimised and maintained. Even though HMIPv6 and PMIPv6 are proposed for the location management, handover latency enhancement, they still have limit of local mobility region. In this paper, we propose a robust mobile video streaming in Heterogeneous Emerging Wireless Systems. In the proposed scheme, the MN selects the best-according to an appropriate metric-wireless technology for a robust video streaming service among all wireless technologies by reducing the handover latency and initiation time when handover may fail. Through performance evaluation, we show that our scheme provides more robust mechanism than other schemes.

  • With the increasing growth of Internet and wireless IP networks, Multimedia systems need to be envisaged as information resources where users can access anywhere and anytime. However, efficient services in these multimedia systems are open and challenging research problem due to user mobility, limited resources in wireless devices and expensive radio bandwidth. To implement multimedia services over heterogeneous network, the IP header compression scheme can be used for saving bandwidth. In this paper, we present an efficient solution for header compression, which is modified form of ECRTP. It shows an architectural framework adopting modified ECRTP when IP tunneling network using GRE over IPSec is implemented. We have conducted simulations in order to analyze the effects of different header compression techniques while delivering real-time services to the wireless access network through secured IP Network. The impacts on performance have been investigated through a series of experiments.

  • Quick, accurate damage monitoring is strongly required for damage assessment in the aftermath of a large natural disaster. Wireless sensor networks are promising technologies to acquire damage information in a citywide area. The wireless sensor networks, however, would be faced with difficulty to collect data in real-time and to expand the scalability of the networks. This paper discusses a scheme of network architecture to cove a whole city in multi-tier heterogeneous networks, which consist of wireless sensor networks, access networks and a backbone network. We first review previous studies for citywide damage monitoring, and then discuss the feature of multi-tier heterogeneous networks to cover a citywide area.

  • Improving resource utilization has been a hot issue in heterogeneous wireless networks (HWNs). This paper proposes a radio resource management (RRM) method based on access proportion optimization. By considering two or more wireless networks in overlapping regions, users in these regions must select one of the networks to access when they engage in calls. Hence, the proportion of service arrival rate that accesses each network in the overlapping region can be treated as an optimized factor for the performance analysis of HWNs. Moreover, this study considers user mobility as an important factor that affects the performance of HWNs, and it is reflected by the handoff rate. The objective of this study is to maximize the total throughput of HWNs by choosing the most appropriate factors. The total throughput of HWNs can be derived on the basis of a Markov model, which is determined by the handoff rate analysis and distribution of service arrival rate in each network. The objective problem can actually be expressed as an optimization problem. Considering the convexity of the objective function, the optimization problem can be solved using the subgradient approach. Finally, an RRM optimization scheme for HWNs is proposed. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can effectively enhance the throughput of HWNs, i.e., improve the radio resource utilization.

  • In order to guide users to select the most optimal access network in heterogeneous wireless networks, a network selection algorithm is proposed which is designed based on multi-objective discrete particle swarm optimization (Multi-Objective Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization, MODPSO). The proposed algorithm keeps fast convergence speed and strong adaptability features of the particle swarm optimization. In addition, it updates an elite set to achieve multi-objective decision-making. Meanwhile, a mutation operator is adopted to make the algorithm converge to the global optimal. Simulation results show that compared to the single-objective algorithm, the proposed algorithm can obtain the optimal combination performance and take into account both the network state and the user preferences.

  • In order to ensure the wireless connectivity and seamless service to mobile users, the next generation network system will be an integration of multiple wireless access networks. In a heterogeneous wireless access system, bandwidth allocation becomes crucial for load balancing to avoid network congestion and improve system utilization efficiency. In this article, we propose a new dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme for hierarchical wireless network systems. First, we derive a multi-objective decision criterion for each access point. Second, a bargaining strategy selection algorithm is developed for the dynamic bandwidth re-allocation. Based on the intervenient Stackelberg game model, the proposed scheme effectively formulates the competitive interaction situation between several access points. The system performance of proposed scheme is evaluated by using extensive simulations. With a simulation study, it is confirmed that the proposed scheme can achieve better performance than other existing schemes under widely diverse network environments.

  • This paper presents a terminal-assisted frame-based packet reservation multiple access (TAF-PRMA) protocol, which optimizes random access control between heterogeneous traffic aiming at more efficient voice/data integrated services in dynamic reservation TDMA-based broadband access networks. In order to achieve a differentiated quality-of-service (QoS) guarantee for individual service plus maximal system resource utilization, TAF-PRMA independently controls the random access parameters such as the lengths of the access regions dedicated to respective service traffic and the corresponding permission probabilities, on a frame-by-frame basis. In addition, we have adopted a terminal-assisted random access mechanism where the voice terminal readjusts a global permission probability from the central controller in order to handle the 'fair access' issue resulting from distributed queuing problems inherent in the access network. Our extensive simulation results indicate that TAF-PRMA achieves significant improvements in terms of voice capacity, delay, and fairness over most of the existing medium access control (MAC) schemes for integrated services.

  • In this paper, we propose a new 3D video coding method for heterogeneous display systems and network infrastructure over enhanced Access Grid (e-AG) using spatio-temporal scalability defined in MPEG-2. The proposed encoder produces several bit-streams for providing temporally and spatially scalable 3D video service. The generated bit-streams can be nelivered with proper spatio-temporal resolution according to network bandwidths and processing speeds, visualization capabilities of client systems. The functionality of proposed spatio-temporal scalability can be exploited for construction of highly scalable 3D video service in heterogeneous distributed environments.

  • The existing mobility management schemes do not fully support the next generation network, which is composed of IP-based core network and various access networks. Currently, ETRI has been developing the AIMS (Access Independent Mobility Service) system which satisfies the ITU-T requirements of mobility management in the next generation network. The AIMS system is designed to provide a mobile host with a fast and reliable mobility service among heterogeneous access networks. Recently, many user devices have multiple communication interfaces, e.g., 3G and WLAN, and thus they can make two or more network connections at the same time. In this paper, we design a scheme of flow mobility, i.e., the movement of selected data flows from one access technology to another, to be applied in the AIMS system, and verify the proposed scheme through the NS-3 simulation study. From the simulation results, we can know that the proposed flow mobility scheme can utilize the network resource efficiently in the heterogeneous mobile networks.
