  • The bone density fractionation method is a potential palaeodietary tool in tracing lifetime dietary changes as well as separating diagenetically altered fractions. This paper presents a workable bone density fractionation method that uses a devised mathematical model and the particle size distribution. Different grinding methods, i.e., a Spex $LN_2$ mill, a Disc mill and a Micronising mill, were used to reduce archaeological bone particles to an appropriate size range, which was then analyzed by a Laser particle sizer. It was found that density profiles are in good agreement with the diagenetic parameters, and with their stable isotope results.

  • Yangjindang house, which is located in Sang-ju province of South Korea, is one of the special Hanok structures dated back to Joseon dynasty. This study aims to examine structural safety of the Yangjindang wood frame building considering dynamic parameters such as the natural frequency and damping ratio. The numerical model of the wood frame building is implemented using Midas Gen, especially the wood joint where column and beam were connected. The behavior of the actual frame building was compared with the modeling results. In addition, structure responses such as shear force, axial force, flexural moment and deflections were calculated and compared with the allowable limits. Numerical results show that, generally, despite of some local members shear failure, Yangjindang's structural response does not exceed the limitation according to current standards.

  • In digital environment the hallmark of the national libraries is its responsibility or function of acquiring and preserving the county´s off-line and on-line publications in term of legal deposit. But the legal deposit system based on print materials in Korea predates the digital age and requires a new legal framework. It would be a tragedy if national library was not to archive the nation´s intellectual and cultural heritage because of limitation of legal deposit system. The purpose of this paper is to analyze form of the current deposit system and to suggest a reform model for legal deposit legislation with priority given to legal scheme and elements(terms, the depositor, the depository, object of deposit, number of copies, time of deposit, compensation and fine, right of migration and free access, etc.).

  • The control of the deformative behaviour of pre-stressed concrete roof elements for a satisfactory service performance is a main issue of their structural design. Slender light-weight wing-shaped roof elements, typical of the European heritage, are particularly sensitive to this problem. The paper presents the results of deformation measurements during storage and of both torsional-flexural and purely flexural load tests carried out on a full-scale 40.5 m long innovative wing-shaped roof element. An element-based simplified integral procedure that de-couples the evolution of the deflection profile with the progressive shortening of the beam is adopted to catch the experimental visco-elastic behaviour of the element and the predictions are compared with normative close-form solutions. A linear 3D fem model is developed to investigate the torsional-flexural behaviour of the member. A mechanical non-linear beam model is used to predict the purely flexural behaviour of the roof member in the pre- and post-cracking phases and to validate the loss prediction of the adopted procedure. Both experimental and numerical results highlight that the adopted analysis method is viable and sound for an accurate simulation of the service behaviour of precast roof elements.

  • The heritage value of the mixed wood-masonry 18th century Pombalino buildings of downtown Lisbon is recognized both nationally and internationally. The present paper focuses on the seismic assessment of global response and retrofitting of a typical Pombalino building by nonlinear static analyses, performed by the research software Tremuri, which is able to model 3D configurations. The structure is modelled using nonlinear beams for masonry panels, while in case of the internal walls (frontal walls) an original formulation has been developed in order to take into account their specific seismic behaviour. Floors are modelled as orthotropic membrane finite elements: this feature allows to simulate the presence of both flexible and rigid diaphragms, being the first ones more representative of the original state while the second ones of retrofitted configurations. Seismic assessment has been evaluated by applying nonlinear static procedure and comparing the performance of different configurations (by considering various retrofitting strategies). Finally, assuming a lognormal cumulative distribution, fragility curves are obtained to be representative of Pombalino buildings: the most important application of such curves is for seismic risk and loss estimation analyses.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the determinants of local farmers' participation and acceptance level in traditional agricultural technology conservation activities, using on the traditional agricultural water utilization system in Uiseong designated as Korea's important agricultural heritage system No. 10. The Heckman sample selection model was used to solve the selection bias. The results show that as the interest in the conservation of the agricultural ecological and environment is high, as the traditional agricultural system in Uiseong is used, as the cultivation area of paddy field increased, and as the age 50s or older, the willingness to participate in conservation activities increased. The results also indicate that as the experience of participating in the conservation of the agricultural ecological and environment and the hours of education are increased, the knowledge of the traditional agricultural system in Uiseong is low, and as the cultivation area of paddy field decreased, the acceptance time for conservation activities increased. The results of this study may contribute to government's policy for traditional agricultural technology conservation.

  • Previously, the International Council of Archives (ICA) provided the General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD(G)) and the International Standard Archival Authority Record for Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families (ISAAR(CPF)) for the systematic archival description by the Committee on Best Practice and Standards. Recently, the new conceptual model and ontology, which is called "Record in Context" (RIC), is being developed by the ICA Experts Group on Archival Description (EGAD). For developing the new archival standard, ICA EGAD has referenced the archival standards of Australia, Spain, and Finland, as well as the FRBRoo integrated model of the museum and library fields and the legacy ICA's descriptive standards. This study, therefore, examined these international trends on the archival descriptive standards and derived a number of suggestions for improvement. As a result, descriptive standards are changing from the guidelines for the standardized archival description to the upper conceptual model and ontology for the flexible archival description and sharing of archival metadata. There is a need to adapt the change of the information environment and promote cooperation among cultural heritage institutions.

  • Besides their spiritual significance, minarets are humanity's cultural heritage to the future generations due to their historical and architectural attraction. Currently, many historical masonry minarets are damaged and destroyed due to several reasons such as earthquakes and wind. Therefore, safety of these religiously significant buildings needs to be thoroughly investigated. The utmost care must be taken into account while investigating these structures. Our study investigated earthquake behavior of historical masonry minaret of Haci Mahmut Mosque. Destructive and non-destructive tests were carried out to determine earthquake safety of this structure. Brick-stone masonry material properties of structure were determined by accomplishing ultrasonic wave velocity, Schmidt Hammer, uniaxial compression (UAC) and indirect tension (Brazilian) tests. Determined material properties were used in the finite element analysis of the structure. To validate the numerical analysis, Operational Modal Analysis was applied to the structure and dynamic characteristics of the structure were determined. To this end, accelerometers were placed on the structure and vibrations due to environmental effects were followed. Finite element model of the minaret was updated using dynamic characteristics of the structure and the realistic numerical model of the structure was obtained. This numerical model was solved by using earthquake records of Turkey with time history analysis (THA) and the realistic earthquake behavior of the structure was introduced.
