A Study about Characteristic of the Medicinal Herbs Added in the Traditional Korean Liquor (전통주에 이용되는 한약재의 특성 연구)

  • Objective : The aim of this study is to analyze medicinal herbs, the ingredients of traditional Korean liquor, focusing on efficacy in the traditional Korean medicine. Through this study, for vitalizing traditional Korean liquor market, the researchers attempt to explain the superiority of traditional Korean liquor and the advantages of using herbs to brew alcoholic beverages. Method : We conducted a research targeting traditional Korean liquors in domestic market from July through september 2012, and finally 70 kinds of liquor were selected and analyzed. Results : Among traditional liquors, fermented liquors are most common. When comparing regions of brewery, the central region of Korea, Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheongnam-do, is major brew area. 37 liquors contain just one medicinal herb. followed 10 liquors contain two medicinal herbs. The most frequently used medicinal herb is Ginseng Radix. And Lycii Fructus, Schisandrae Fructus, Angelicae Gigantis Radix and Chrysanthemi Indici Flos are well used medicinal herbs to brew traditional liquors. In the classification of efficacy of medicinal herbs, tonifying and replenishing medicinal herbs are most popular as ingredients in the traditional alcohols, astringent medicinal herbs, exterior releasing medicinal herbs and heat clearing medicinal herbs are also frequently used. Investigation of tastes and properties of the herbs, it reached a conclusion as below: sweet taste is most common, followed by sour taste and bitter taste. Warm property is account for 50% approximately, followed by cold property. Conclusion : Medicinal herbs have been widely used in the traditional Korean liquor. It came out into the open that the liquor with medicinal herbs is very good for our body in terms of longevity and invigoration. However, liquor consumers concern about not only the efficacy but also the taste, scent and color. Therefore, further study about these things would be required to demonstrate the superiority of the traditional Korean liquor.

유통 생약재의 중금속 함유량 조사에 관한 연구

  • This study was carried out to research on the heavy metal contents of domestic and imported medicinal herbs. The heavy metals contents in 116 samples of 51 types of medicinal herbs were measured by using a modified Monier-Williams, mercury analyzer and inductively coupled plasma spectrometer(ICP). The heavy metal contents of medicinal herbs were as follows; Hg: 0.010(domestic: 0.010, imported: 0.010), Pb: 0.380(0.311, 0.449), Cd: 0.080(0.101, 0.059), As: 2.085(1.845, 2.324), Mn: 31.564(33.844, 29.283), Zn: 15.436(18.703, 12.168), Cu: 3.406(3.374, 3.437), Fe: 134.944(108.327, 161.561) by ppm unit. The measured values of Pb and Cd of domestic and imported medicinal herbs showed lower levels than the recommended levels of those in medicinal herbs by WHO/PHARM (Pb: not more than 10 ppm, Cd: not more than 0.3 ppm). Finally, this results will be used as a basic data for the future legislation on the regulation and control of heavy metal contents of medicinal herbs.

Study on the Subacute Toxicity of Complex of Pine Needle Oil and Korean Medicinal Herbs against Rats

  • Pine needle oil and Korean medicinal herbs (KMH) are known as effective therapeutic agents on various blood vessel disease. We have already reported the ameliorative effect of complex of pine needle oil and Korean medicinal herbs against hyperlipidemia. But safety and non - toxicity of pine needle oil and Korean medicinal herbs to normal animal cells have not been studied clearly. In this study, we investigated whether pine needle oil and Korean medicinal herbs show side effects on rat or not. These materials were administered to rats, and subacute toxicity was examined by measuring the hematological values, CBC differentiation, biochemical levels of blood (TP, total protein; albumin; ALP, alkaline phosphotase; AST, aspatate aminotrans- ferase; ALT, alanine aminotransferase; T-Chol., total cholesterol; T-Bil., total bilirubin) and urine analysis, suggesting that the sample have no side effects and cytotoxicity. These results indicate that the complex of pine needle oil and Korean medicinal herbs may effective non- toxic, safety therapeutic agents on hepatocytes and hyperlipidemia.

University Students' Perceptions of Herbs and Sensory Characteristics of Bread with Added Herbs (허브에 대한 대학생의 인치도 및 허브를 첨가한 식빵의 관능적 특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of herbs as a bread additive among 880 university students(436 male and 444 female). A sensory evaluation was also undertaken to investigate the taste and qualitative aspects of breads with various herb additives such as rosemary and mint. First, rosemary was the most popular(40.9%), followed by mint(28.5%) and lavender(10.9%). Second, sensory evaluation gave a positive response rate of 85.8% for the breads and cookies with added herbs. Third, in terms of using herbs for breads and cookies, respondents favored mint as the favorite with 58.1%, followed by rosemary with 57.9%. Fourth, in terms of sensory test, the highest preference was scored by the bread with 2% mint and 2% rosemary, and this ingrediebt mixture was confirmed as the best to make herb added breads.

In vitro Effects of the Complex of Korean Citrus junos and Medicinal Herbs on the Cell Growth in CCD-986sk Human Fibroblast Cell Line

  • In order to investigate whether or not CCD-980sk cell line can be affected by Korean Citrus junos and medicinal herbs, we examined the MTT assay when we treated Korean Citrus junos and medicinal herbs in CCD-986sk human fibroblast cell line. The samples that added complex of grinded extracts of Korean Citrus junos and boiling-water extracts from Korean medicinal herbs were tested toy cell proliferation activity by means of a modification of the MTT assay. Among mixture of Citron 3 (Citron 3, less mellowed citron which was ripened for three months) and boiling-water extracts, the group Citron 3+Phellinus linteus showed significantly strong cell proliferation activity. And among mixture of Citron 4 (Citron 4, completely mellowed citron which was ripened for four months) and boiling-water extracts, the group Citron 4+Cordyceps militaris and Citron 4+Phellinus linteus showed significantly strong cell proliferation activity, respectively. These results suggest that complex of Korean Citrus junos and medicinal herbs could be an excellent candidate toy protection of human skin aging.

The importance of assessing heavy metals in medicinal herbs: a quantitative study

  • Consumption of herbal products from the medicinal plants contaminated with heavy metals can cause serious consequences on human health. This is a major concern for traditional and herbal medicine. The present study was carried out to analyze and quantify the levels of six potentially toxic heavy metals namely arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury, chromium and nickel in ten important Indian medicinal herbs. The air dried raw herbs were processed by microwave assisted wet digestion and analyzed by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with graphite tube atomizer. Except the chromium content in three plants, all the levels of six heavy metals analyzed were found to be quite below the permissible limits in all the ten raw medicinal herbs analyzed. The present work implies that, regular and systematic screening of raw medicinal herbs is necessary to check the levels of the heavy metal contaminants before using them for consumption or preparation of herbal formulations so that the possible contamination cannot cumulate up to the finished products.

A Survey of the Medicinal Herbs Used in the Traditional Korean Tea (한방차의 원료로 사용된 한약재 조사연구)

Through this study, for vitalizing traditional Korean Tea market, the researchers attempt to explain the superiority of traditional Korean Tea. And it will be used basis data on further traditional Korean Tea. Methods : We conducted a research targeting traditional Korean Tea in domestic market from June through December 2014, and finally 205 kinds of Tea were selected and analyzed. Results : 48 kinds of medicinal herbs were used alone as ingredients in the traditional Korean Tea containing just one medicinal Herb. and 87 kinds of medicinal herbs were used as ingredients in the traditional Korean Tea containing more than two kinds medicinal Herbs. In the classification of the medicinal Herbs by part for use, roots and rhizome is most used. In the classification of efficacy of medicinal herbs, tonifying and replenishing medicinal herbs are most popular as ingredients in the traditional Korean Tea. Conclusions : Medicinal herbs have been widely used in the traditional Korean Tea. Tea consumers concern about not only the efficacy but also the taste, scent and color. Therefore, further study about these things would be required to demonstrate the superiority of the traditional Korean Tea.

The effects of Chungpesagan-Tang and herbs on Mouse neuroblastoma 2a cells damaged by hypoxia-reoxygenation (청폐사간탕(淸肺瀉肝湯)과 단미(單味)들이 Hypoxia-Reoxygenation에 의해 손상받은 Mouse Neuroblastoma 2a Cells에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Object : This study was designed to assess effect of Chungpesagan-Tang and herbs on Mouse neuroblastoma 2a cells damaged by hypoxia-reoxygenation. Method : Mouse neuroblastoma 2a (N2a) cells were measured by MTT assay and LDH assay after 48h hypoxia and 6h reoxygenation. Mouse neuroblastoma 2a (N2a) cells were treated by Chungpesagan-Tang and herbs. Result : In MTT assay of hypoxia all of herbs were almost ineffective and Hubak was a little effective. 2. In MTT assay of reoxygenation most of herbs were not effective. But Hubak was some effective. 3. In LDH assay of hypoxia all of herbs were effective. Especially Chungpesagan-Tang were equally effective on all of concentration. 4. In LDH assay of reoxygenation all of herbs were generally effective. Especially Chungpesagan-Tang and Baekji were highly effective and Kilkyung was also effective on low concentration. 5, The herbs were generally effective on LDH assay of hypoxia and reoxygenation. Conclusion : The results suggest that Chungpesagan-Tang and all of herbs may have protective effect on condition of oxidative stress and can be applied on the development of a new medicine for neurodegenerative disease like dementia.
