Most of the prescriptions currently used by Korean medicine institutions to treat patients are delivered in the form of decoctions. The author reviewed the five-viscera section (五臟門) of Euibangyoochui (醫方類聚), which is composed of theory, medicinals, diet, taboo, acupuncture and moxibustion, and exercises. The medicinals cover a total of 1,144 prescriptions cited from 14 medical books, and provides a wide range of prescriptions and delivery options, including decoctions, powders and pills. Of the 1,144 prescriptions, the author notes that among them, 577 prescriptions which use powders (41%) are the most popular; 444 are pills (31%) and are the second most popular; 329 decoctions (23%) are the third most popular, and 64 other prescriptions are 5 percent. Expanding treatment options and delivery of medicinal prescriptions presented in the five-viscera section (五臟門) of Euibangyoochui (醫方類聚), is beneficial to both patients and doctors. The author suggests that expansion of herbal treatment options will provide opportunities to overcome current treatment limitations in the Korean medical service industry.
This study was performed to provide basic data that predict the application of Saengmaegsan(SMS) as medicinal food. SMS has been used in oriental medicine for many years as a therapeutic agent for cerebral disease. We examined the effects of SMS on physiological function in isolated abdominal aorta and femoral artery from rabbit and measured the changes of regional cerebral hood flow(rCBF), which was continually monitored by laser-doppler flowmeter and pressure transducer in anesthetized adult Spargue-Dawley rats through the data acquisition system composed of MacLab and Macintosh computer. The contraction forces by injection of norephinephrine in isolated abdominal aorta and femoral artery were significantly decreased in each concentration of SMS treatment compared with control. rCBF was increased by SMS in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that SMS causes a diverse response of rCBF and arterial diameter. These mechanism in rCBF increase may be mediated by prostaglandis, cyclic GMP and adrenergic $\beta-receptor$. Also mechanism in artery contraction decrease is also mediated by prostaglandis and cyclic GMP. These results indicate that SMS can be nsed as a safe and clinically applicable as a supplementation of diet therapy for cerebral cardiovascular disease patients.
I In the rearch of the principle of herb classification based on constitution I have recognised Lee Jae Ma(李濟馬)'s medical thought on the herb. He had believed that herb must be used when needed, also had opposed taking overdose of medicine. And he had prescribed to a patient based on constitution. The results were summerized as follow; 1. In the classification of herb according to constitution, Although Gimilon(氣味論) that empasized in the herbal medicine have had reference value but cannot be absolute classific standard. The medicinal portion of herb was not significant. And through research the past prescription that were qouted by Lee Jae Ma cannot find a meaningful result. 2. Lee Jae Ma denied the tradtional GuiKyung(歸經) theory, and classified into Iung(肺), spleen(脾), liver(肝), kidney(腎). And when he gave medical teatment, he has used the methods of the supplement to weakned organ. 3. On the principle of herb classification based on constitution, Lee Jae Ma had presented general rule that are fragrance(馨), odor(臭), liquid(液), taste(味). Although it had suitable tendency but cannot complitely coinside with the actual. Therefore I interpreted fragrance(馨), odor(臭), liquid(液), taste(味) into the symbol that represent the chief effect. On these conception it's necessary more study.
In the present study, we assessed the effect of the PPA (Polygala japonica Houtt., Polygala tenuifolia WILLD. and Acorus gramineus SOLAND. mixed preparation), a traditional herbal prescription, on the learning and memory impairments induced by scopolamine. The cognition-enhancing effect of PPA was investigated using a passive avoidance test, Y-maze test and the Morris water maze test in mice. Drug-induced amnesia was induced by treating animals with scopolamine (1 mg/kg, i.p.). A single PPA (400 and 800 (mg/kg)) administration significantly reversed the scopolamine-induced cognitive impairments in the passive avoidance test (P<0.05). On the Y-maze test, PPA (400 and 800 (mg/kg)) also significantly reversed scopolamine-induced cognitive impairments in mice (P<0.05). PPA also improved escape latencies in training trials and increased swimming times and distances within the target zone of the Morris water maze (P<0.05). These results suggest that PPA attenuates amnesic state induced by scopolamine and that these Effect are mediated by enhancing the cholinergic dysfunction.
Objectives : This report describes 75 studies related to the use of Zingiberis siccatum Rhizoma mainly blended from Dongeuibogam. Methods : The 75 Prescriptions of Consumptive part in DonguiBogam analysed frequency of basic prescriptions, symptoms of prescriptions and the pathology. Results : Prescriptions that Zingiberis siccatum Rhizoma was taken as a monarch drug are utilized for 25 therapeutic purposes, for example, cold disease, stool disease, cough disease. In particular, 16.0% of prescriptions appear in the chapter of cold. Prescriptions that utilize Zingiberis siccatum Rhizoma as the main component are used in the treatment of cold, stool and cough disease. Zingiberis siccatum Rhizoma is used in pathogenic factors such as weakness cold and cold strength and used in pathology related to the spleen and stomach system. The dosage of Zingiberis siccatum Rhizoma is 5pun(about 1.88g) to 4nyang(about 150.4g), however 1don(about 3.75g) has been taken the most for clinical application. Ijungtang is the most useful base prescriptions which use the Zingiberis siccatum Rhizoma as the main ingredient. Conclusions : As a result of Study on Analysis all Prescriptions of Zingiberis siccatum Rhizoma in DonguiBogam. We can understand more about basic prescriptions, symptoms of prescriptions and the pathology that are using for Zingiberis siccatum Rhizoma.
We investigated the inhibitory effect of an oral administration of a Sophora flavescens Aiton ethanol extract (SFE) on the development of atopic dermatitis (AD) by using NC/Nga model mice. The induction of atopic dermatitis-like lesion was conducted by the removal of the back hairs and topical application of a mite antigen (Dermatophagoides farinae, Df) on to the back skin twice a week for 8 weeks. SFE was orally administered at a different doses (100-400 mg/kg). Atopic dermatitis-like skin lesions were evaluated by dermatitis scores, skin histology and immunological parameters (serum levels of IgE, TARC/CCL17, MDC/CCL22, and CTACK/CCL27). Oral administration of SFE significantly inhibited the clinical sign of Df-induced atopic dermatitis, including dermatitis score and leukocyte infiltration. Moreover, SFE suppressed significantly the serum IgE and Th2 chemokine (TARC/CCL17, MDC/CCL22, and CTACK/CCL27) levels in a concentration dependent manner. These results suggest that oral administration of SFE could reduce significantly the clinical signs and Th2 chemokines in Df-induced atopic dermatitis model mice. Therefore, SFE may be effective substances for the management of AD in human.
Objectives : To develop a natural antioxidant and anti-hemolytic agents, we investigated the effects of ethanol extracts of Carpesii Fructus and Farfarae Flos. Methods : Aerial parts of Carpesii Fructus and Farfarae Flos were extracted with 80% ethanol. Antioxidant activity of Carpesii Fructus or Farfarae Flos extract was evaluated by employing three different assays, i.e., 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-suphonic acid) diammonium (ABTS) scavenging and reducing power activities. Also, anti-hemolytic activity of Carpesii Fructus or Farfarae Flos extract was determined using [2,2'-azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH)]-induced hemolysis, glutathione (GSH) depletion and malondialdehyde (MDA) formation in normal rat red blood cells (RBC) or plasma. Results : The extracts obtained from Carpesii Fructus and Farfarae Flos dose-dependently increased the scavenging activity on DPPH- or ABTS-induced radicals and the reducing power activities. Carpesii Fructus and Farfarae Flos were similar to the scavenging activity and the reducing power of butylated hydroxy anisole effect at high concentration ($1,000{\mu}g/mL$). RBC oxidative hemolysis and plasma MDA formation induced by AAPH were significantly suppressed by the extracts of Carpesii Fructus and Farfarae Flos in a dose-dependent manner. Also, Carpesii Fructus and Farfarae Flos extracts prevented the depletion of cystosolic antioxidant GSH in RBCs. Carpesii Fructus generally had better than the free radical scavenging activity, the reducing power and anti-hemolytic effects of Farfarae Flos. Conclusions : These results suggest that Carpesii Fructus and Farfarae Flos may have value as the potential antioxidant and anti-hemolytic medicinal plant.
Bojungikki-tang-gamibang is a widely used herbal prescription in traditional medicine in Korea. The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of Bojungikki-tang-gamibang for patients who have pontine stroke. They have problems with type of Qi deficiency(氣虛) in the rehabilitation stage. The type of Qi deficiency caused the dizziness and ataxia for the patients. In this study there are two types of patients. The first case is a patient with dizziness and ataxia because of potine hemorrhage. The second case is a patient who has the same symptoms as the first one but caused by pontine infraction. We treated the two patients with Bojungikki-tang-gamibang. The Improvement of symptom was evaluated by Korean vestibular disorders activities of daily living scale(K-VADL). As a result the degree of dizziness decreased noticeably while other symptoms improved as well. This study suggests that Bojungikki-tang-gamibang may be an effective treatment for patients who suffer stroke with type of Qi deficiency(氣虛) in the rehabilitations stage. However, more cases and methods of diagnosis are required to prove that the oriental medicine, Bojungikki-tang-gamibang can apply to patients universally.
Vascular inflammation is an important event in the development of vascular diseases such as tumor progression and atherosclerosis. This study was to investigate the inhibitory effects of WK-38, a new herbal prescription for the treatment of atherosclerosis, on vascular inflammation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). WK-38 is composed of Rhei Rhizoma, Magonoliae Cortex, Moutan Cortez Radicis. Pretreatment with WK-38 was significantly blocked TNF-$\alpha$-induced expression level of cell adhesion molecules such as vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and endothelial cell selectin (E-selectin) in a dose-dependent manner. TNF-$\alpha$-induced cell adhesion in co-cultured U937 and HUVEC was also blocked by pretreatment with WK-38. Moreover, WK-38 significantly suppressed p65 NF-${\kappa}B$ translocation into the nucleus by TNF-$\alpha$ as well as the phosphorylation and degradation of $I{\kappa}B-{\alpha}$. In conclusion, the present data suggested that WK-38 could suppress TNF-$\alpha$-induced vascular inflammatory process, though inhibition of NF-${\kappa}B$ activation in HUVEC.
The degree of KAP study on oriental traditional medicine was examined with some korean from July 1st to August 30th in 1996. The result of the study for predicting health and ill patterns runs as fellows. 1) It is too weak to understand and adertise oriental traditional medicine doctors and the curable disease; moreover cured diseases rather preponderate. 2) Although most patients go to oriental traditional medical clinic for the purpose of medical herbs in package and acupuncture, they think the medical fee a high expensive. 3) The 77.9% of respondents recognize oriental traditional medical doctors as a profession and others think them only abundant workers; therefore it is rather low to think oriental traditional doctors a profession. 4) Most respondents ink that oriental traditional medicine should improved in the inside; such as the expensive fee, scientific reinforcement of theory, lack of univerality, improvement and enlargement of insurance, unkindness, shortage of publicity, dropped equipment, system of medical specialist, lack of integration with western medicine, exact diagnosis and confidence of remedy and low efficacy, etc. 5) The struggle against the government (1995-1996 about herbal prescription right by western pharmacy) has taken the change of affirmative recognition. 6) The degree that acknowleges of oriental traditional medicine through these basic contents is average 61.65 mark. To be brief, although the step of recognition and attitude of oriental me야cine is very affirmative aspect, actually considerable difficult factors is in the last chosen step.
