  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to report the effect of complex Korean medicine treatments on Essential Tremor Plus (ET plus) patient aggravated by a traffic accident. Methods: We treated an ET plus patient with complex Korean medicine. The patient's resting tremor and kinetic tremor in both hands intensified after experiencing a traffic accident, with tremor in the left hand being worse than that in the right hand. Effect of complex Korean medicine treatment was evaluated using Fahn-Tolosa-Marin Tremor Rating Scale (FTMTRS), Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Results: After 26 weeks of treatments (acupuncture, pharmacupuncture, cupping, Iigyeungbyunqi-therapy, and herbal medicine), the FTMTRS decreased from 38 to 15. NRS of Lt. upper limb pain decreased from NRS 9 to 0. BAI score also decreased from 31 to 17. Conclusions: Complex Korean medicine could be used to treat patients with ET plus aggravated by a traffic accident.

  • Conventional pharmacology has followed the notion of the reductionist 'single target selective drug paradigm'. Network pharmacology has made conventional pharmacology newer while meeting the challenges of this era. Conventional pharmacological methods have not solved the problems of Korean Medicine. For this reason, Network pharmaco- logy needs urgently and desperately for Korean medicine research. However, the information on drug interactions in herbal medicines is complex and less known. There are still some hurdles before network pharmacology emerges, one factor which constitutes Korean medicine research. There is a need to look for solutions other than inheriting the network pharmacology to solve problems that Korean medicine has before. The way of 'in silico' research should be the best to meet this challenge. With the help of 'in silico' research, there might have been emerged new findings of experimental data in Korean Medicine. If 'herbalomics' has been close to foundation through the 'in silico' method, it will contribute to the formation of modern Korean medicine and, simultaneously, come to a foundation for revitalizing exchanges with orthodox Western medicine. Eventually, it ends with a significant profitable and healthy result for the patients.

Methods : Domestic theses, published since 2001, mentioning anti-inflammation or pain relief, obesity, or safety of herbal acupuncture therapy were reviewed and analyzed. These theses were then classified by university, year, and subject. Results : The following results were obtained in this study. 1. Among published theses related to anti-inflammation effects of herbal-acupuncture, studies about arthritis comprised the most part, 52. In theses relating to causes of arthritis, 16 were about adjuvant, which was the most, followed by Type II collagen, LPS and carrageenan. Blood test, reactions of inflammation and revelation of cytokine and immune cellswere methods for evaluating anti-inflammation effect. The tendency of experimental methods was to focus on molecular biologic method. 2. In theses related to pain relief, many clinical attempts with herbal injection were carried out, and Carthami Flos and Scolopendrawere used most. Observing reduction of pain inducing factor and checking behavioral change were methods for evaluating pain relief. 3. In theses related to obesity, research focused on effects in association with spots on the body suitable for acupuncture. There were also attempts comparing effectiveness between single injections and complex injections. Astraball Radix, Angelica Gigantis Radix, Coicis Semen and Taeumjowetang were used. Evaluation of anti-obesity effects were by weight loss, food efficiency, blood lipid profile and evaluation of liver function. 4. In theses related to safety of herbal-acupuncture, Herba Chelidonii Chaenonelis Fructus, Clematis Florida Thunb, Corydalidis Tuber, Paeoniae Radix, and Carthami Flos which marked 2 theses each were most studied. • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate influencing factors of using Korean medicine services (KMS) using the 2017 Korean Medicine Utilization Survey (KMUS). Methods: Demographic statistics of the survey were summarized and influencing factors of the KMS experience and the intention to visit KMS were analyzed using logistic regression model with complex sample design. Influencing factors were specified based on Andersen's behavioral model of health care utilization and factors associated with individual recognitions of KMS. Additionally, using the ordinary logistic regression model without complex sample design, the survey data were analyzed to compare the results. Results: In the logistic regression analysis, sex, age, health condition, presence of chronic disease, a degree of knowledge about Korean Medicine, and a view about herbal medicine safety were statistically significant both in the KMS experience, and the intention to visit KMS. Marital status was statistically significant in the KMS experience, while family income, a view about the cost of KMS were statistically significant in the intention to visit KMS. Conclusion: Individual recognitions of KMS and enabling components should be considered when establishing KMS policies. In addition, future studies analyzing KMUS need to take into account the complex sample design features of the survey to avoid statistically misleading results.

  • This report presents the clinical progress of a 50-year-old male diagnosed with a left acetabular fracture and left rib fracture after falling from a height of 3 m. The patient was treated nonsurgically and underwent complex traditional Korean medicine (TKM) treatment and rehabilitation, including acupuncture, electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture, bee venom, herbal medicine, physiotherapy, and moxibustion. Patient progress was assessed using the numerical rating scale (NRS), manual muscle test (MMT), and modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS). During 113 days of hospitalization, the NRS score decreased from 7 to 3, and the MMT grade increased to normal in the hip, knee, and ankle joints. The mHHS score increased from 26 to 99 points. Radiographs and computed tomography scans of the left acetabulum were obtained periodically, and fracture union was successfully achieved. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of complex TKM treatment and rehabilitation of acetabular fractures.
