  • Recently, Many people begin to be interested in aromatherapy and as the effects of aromatherapy(or essential oils) are being known widely. as aromatherapy is regarded as a new effective method of natural therapy in treatment of human Aromatherapy is defined, 'therapy that methods of inhalation, massage, drink is used, to medical effects, physical effects, psychologic effects.' In this paper, By investigating differences and commons between useful essential oils that are used frequently in children's aroma care and herb medicine, digesting several aromathrapy books and 'Boncho(Herbs)'books, I can obtain such conclusions. 1. Most essential oils mainly can cure skin trobles, psychological troubles. 2. Systemic curing ability of essential oils in human body are urination in reproductive system, sediation in psychological system, sweating in circulation system, anti-inflammation in respiratory system, tonic in digestive system, pain-killing in musclular system, stimulating-immunity in immune system, menstruation in OB & GY3. Herb medicine correspond to essential oils are Chamomile(母:菊: Moguk), Ginger(生畺: Saengang), Frankinsense(乳香: Yuhyang), Eucalyptus(按葉: Anyup), Rosemary(迷迭: Mizil), Rose(薔薇: Jangmi), Sandalwood(檀香: Danhyang), Thyme(麝香草: Sahyangcho) Ylang Ylang(依蘭: Eulan), Lemon(??皮: Ryungmongpi), Madarin(陣皮: Zinpi), Orange(枳殼: Zigak). 4. There are differences of curing ability in human between herb medicine and essential oils because of curing mechanism, but effect on human body are so simular.

  • Most of the herb residue producing from oriental medical clinics(OMC) and hospitals(OMH) is wasted in Korea. To develop of adsorbent for removing heavy metal from wastewater, the various pre-treatment methods of the herb residue were evaluated by potentiometric titration, Freundlich isotherm adsorption test and the kinetic adsorption test. The herb residue was pre-treated for increasing the adsorption capacity by cleaning with distilled water, 0.1 N HCl and 0.1 N NaOH and by heating at $370^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. It showed a typical weak acid-weak base titration curve and a short pH break like commercial activated carbon during photentiometric titration of pre-treated herb residue. The log-log plots in the Freundlich isotherm test were linear on the herb residue pre-treated with NaOH or HCl like commercial activated carbon. The adsorption capacity(qe) in the Freundlich isotherm test for $Cr^{6+}$ was 1.5 times higher in the pre-treated herb residue with HCl than in activated carbon. On the other hand the herb residue pre-treated with NaOH showed the good adsorption capacities for $Pb^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ and $Cd^{2+}$ even though those adsorption capacities were lower than that of activated carbon. In kinetic test, most of heavy metals removed within the first 10 min of contact and then approached to equilibrium with increasing contact time. The removal rate of heavy metals increased with an increase of the amount of adsorbent. Likewise, the removal rates of heavy metals were higher in the herb residue pre-treated with NaOH than in that pre-treated with HCl. The adsorption preference of herb residues pre-treated with NaOH or HCl was $Pb^{2+}>Cu^{2+}$ or $Cd^{2+}>Cr^{6+}$ in the order. Conclusively, the herb residue can be used as an alternative adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals depending on pr-treatment methods.

  • Objectives : We present some opinions to reduce the risk of herb-drug interactions through scanning "About Herbs" of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Website. Methods : We searched the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Website of About Herbs and investigated herb-drug interactions. Results : There are 237 herbs and 196 drugs on About Herbs. 81.1% of herbs have fewer than 2 interactions listed.: 86.3% of drugs fewer than 3 interactions. Especially, 13 herbs were reported to have interactions with inclusive chemoagents on About Herbs. Only L-theanine has positive interaction with inclusive chemoagents. The others have negative interactions with inclusive chemoagents. 12 single chemoagents were reported to have interactions with some herbs. Especially tamoxifen-black cohosh, methotrexate-glutamin and aldesleukin-Huang Chi have positive interactions to increase the effects of the chemoagent. Conclusions : We should urgently create a risk management system of herb-drug interactions and take note of the risk of herb-drug interactions. We should build up systemic, evidence-based informations on popular herbs used by Korean cancer patients and herb-drug interactions in oncology like About Herbs.

  • This study tried to integrate the traditional oriental medical theories and results of experimental studies of herbaceous plants on anti-diabetes. And I tried to analyze recent experimental study trend on the anti-diabetic herb. I searched anti-diabetic herb studies on 4 korean databases and 10 korean journals by keywords, 'diabetes', 'blood glucose', 'glycometabolism', 'pancreatic ${\beta}$-cell', etc. In order to see detail review, searching was performed from 2000 to 2010. And I searched 125 study cases concerning anti-diabetic herb and 72 varieties herbaceous plants used in study of anti-diabetes. and I analyzed the choice motives of each herb for anti-diabetic study, the extract methods and anti-diabetic evaluation contents. And I analyzed anti-diabetic herbs from a traditional oriental medical point of view. When the researchers chose herb for anti-diabetic experiment, just 8.8% of the choice was based on the oriental medical evidences. I found that 60.6% of the herb shown to be effective in diabetes experimentally had oriental medical theory-based Properties(性). There were studies with whole plants(16.8%), aqueous extract(45.6%), methanol extract(8.0%), ethanol extract(8.0%) and comparative studies of more than 2 types of extracts or various fractions(18.4%). The most frequent experimental diabetic models was diabetic mouse induced by streptozotocin(STZ)(87.8%). And there were db/db mouse(6.7%), ob/ob mouse(1.1%), etc. 33.6% of all studies just measured hematological indices of diabetes, and 66.4% researches analyzed details. To improve herbaceous plants study on diabetes, we oriental medical scientists have to integrate the oriental medical theories and results of experimental studies.

  • Cervus elaphus for herb-acupuncture solution(CEHAS) was tested for the effects of free radical generating enzyme and lipid peroxidation in rat's liver. In vitro, levels of lipid peroxide in tissues of liver were proportionally decreased to concentration of CEHAS. They were much more decreased. when lipid peroxidation was induced with ferrous iron $(Fe^{-2})$. Also, enzyme activities of xanthine oxidase were decreased. The ratio of type conversion of xanthine oxidase was lowered, too. But, here was not special changes on enzyme activities of aldehyde oxidase. These results suggest that CEHAS decrease the activities of free radical generating enzymes such as xanthine oxidase which form lipid peroxide.
