Results : 1) Muscle activity of gluteus medius muscle was the highest D1 before wearing single strap hemisling. 2) Muscle activity of hamstring muscle was the highest D3 after wearing single strap hemisling. 3) Muscle activity of quadriceps muscle was the highest D5 after wearing single strap hemisling. 4) Muscle activity of tibialis anterior muscle was the highest D1 after wearing single strap hemisling. 5) Muscle activity of soleus muscle was the highest D2 before wearing single strap hemisling. Conclusion : Wearing single strap hemisling of hemiplegic patients had effect on muscle activity of gluteus medius but didn't effect gluteus medius, hamstring, quadriceps, tibialis anterior muscle and soleus muscle.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of aquatic gait training on plantar foot pressure, foot kinesiology and gait speed in right hemiplegic patients. The subject were 20 stroke patients who elapsed from 12 month to 24 month after stroke(aquatic gait training group(n=10), land gait training group(n=10)). This study measured plantar foot pressure, toe out angle, subtalar joint angle, gait speed from data of gate on 2m long measuring apparatus for RS-scan system(RS scan Ltd. German). This experiment performed in twice, before and after the aquatic gait training and land gait training. Collected data were statistically analyzed by SPSS Ver. 12.0 using descriptive statistics, paired t-test. Aquatic gait training group had more variety pressure area on their foot such as T1(Toe 1), HM(Heel medial), and HL(Heel lateral). But motion of subtalar joint flexibility and toe out angle decreased considerably and gate speed also increased. According to the result, aquatic gait training is considered as more effective way in foot stability and normal gait pattern than land gait training.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze and to compare the difference and the change between dynamic balance exercise group and dynamic balance exercise with core program exercise group. Also, based on this data, to prescribe effective exercises for hemiplegic patients and the pubis in order to achieve more effective dynamic balance exercise rehabilitation and better dynamic balance exercise in the field of therapeutical exercise. Methods : Twenty subjects(Core program exercise plus Dynamic balance exercise group, CP: 10, Dynamic balance exercise group, NCP: 10) were chosen among hemiplegic patients. Measurements of dynamic balance were evaluated at initial presentation(pretest) and after 4, 8, 12 weeks'. Paired t-test and Repeated measured ANOVA was utilized to detect the mean difference between the groups. Results : Firstly, after 4 weeks' and 8 weeks' and 12 weeks' CP exercise and NCP exercise, there were all significant difference to increase dynamic balance (p<0.05). secondly, after 4 weeks' and 8 weeks' and 12 weeks' CP and NCP exercise, there was significant difference to increase dynamic balance more CP group than NCP group. Lastly, among 4 weeks' and 8 weeks' and 12 weeks' CP exercise, there was progressively significant difference to increase dynamic balance(p<0.05). Conclusions : This study showed that dynamic balance exercise with core program exercise is an effective treatment strategy for hemiplegic patients than dynamic balance exercise rehabilitation.

The objectives of this study was to investigate the incidence and any correction between hemiplegia with pusher syndrome and neuropsychological symptoms such as hemineglect and anosognosia. Pusher syndrome defines that the patient leans toward the hemiplegic side regardless of the position that patient was placed on and resists any attempt for passive correction of posture that would move his weight toward the midline of the body. The subjects of this study were 69 acute hemiplegia who had been rehabilitated at department of rehabilitation medicine, Asan Medical Center from May 1. 1999 through July 31. 1999. The data were analyzed by researchers who were trained for assessment of anosognosia and hemineglect. 12 subjects were excluded for confusion. The method of statistical analysis used for our study was Fisher's exact test. Results of the study disclosed 21 hemiplegia(38.6%) with pusher syndrome. In conclusion, these hemiplegic patients with pusher syndrome did not have any correlation with hemineglect and anosognosia and also had no preference of stroke side.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change of functional ambulation profile(FAP) and temporal-spatial gait parameters in hemiplegic patient by forceful respiratory exercise. 28 Hemiplegic patients due to stroke was randomized in 3 groups, forceful expiratory training(FET), forceful inspiratory training(FIT) and control group. In the experimental groups, ordinary physical therapy with forceful expiratory training and forceful inspiratory training for 20 minutes duration 3 times per week for 6 weeks were respectively performed. In the control group, only ordinary physical therapy was done. FAP and temporal-spatial gait parameters was measured at before and after experiments. The results of this experimental study were as follows : 1. In comparison of FAP before and after experiment, the FAP was significantly increased in the FET and FIT group (p<.01). In comparison of difference of FAP among 3 groups, there was the significant difference between the FIT group and the control group (p<.05). 2. The results of temporal-spatial gait parameters are as follows : 1) In comparison of gait velocity before and after experiment, the gait velocity was significantly increased in the FET and FIT group (p<.05). In comparison of difference of the gait velocity among 3 groups, there was the significantly difference between the FIT group and the control group (p<.05). 2) In comparison of gait cadence before and after experiment, the gait cadence was significantly increased in FIT group (p<.05). In comparison of the difference of the gait cadence among 3 groups, there was no significant difference between the FIT group and the control group (p>.05). Based on these results, it is concluded that the forced respiratory exercise program for 6 weeks can be improve the FAP and temporal-spatial gait parameters in hemiplegic patients. Therefore, the forced respiratory exercise is useful to improve the walking ability in hemiplegic patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of hand acupoint massages on ADL ability and grip strength of stroke patients. Method: This study was designed as a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group for pre and post-test. Twenty-eight patients were assigned to the experimental group and thirty to the control group. The hand acupoint massage was applied to both hands of the experimental group for sixteen minutes each time, a total of 15 times during five weeks. The patient's ADL ability and grip strength were measured before and after the program. The data were analyzed with mean. percent, chi-square, a paired t-test and t-test. Result: The level of ADL ability was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group. Also, the level of grip strength was significantly higher in the experimental group of the plegic side than in the control group, but not in the normal side. Conclusion: We have found that the hand acupoint massage helps the stroke patients improve their ADL ability and grip strength. Through this result, the hand acupoint massage could be considered as an effective application for rehabilitation of hemiplegic patients after stroke.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of performing a dual task on gait velocity, temporospatial variables, and symmetry in subjects with subacute stroke. Methods: The study included 14 independent community ambulators with gait velocity of 0.8m/s. The Korean mini-mental state examination, the Berg balance scale, the Trunk impairment scale, and the Fugl-Meyer assessment scale were used to recruit homogeneous subjects. Subjects performed a single task (10m ambulation at a comfortable speed) and a dual task (10m ambulation at a comfortable speed while carrying a water-filled glass). Gait variables were examined with the OptoGait system. Results: The findings of this study were as follows: 1) Gait velocity decreased significantly in the dual-task condition as compared to the single task condition. 2) There were no significant differences between the paretic and non-paretic stances. 3) Paretic swing decreased significantly in the dual-task condition as compared to the single task condition. 4) The non-paretic, double-limb support phase increased significantly in the dual-task condition as compared to the single- task condition. 5) There was no significant difference in temporal symmetry. 6) Non-paretic step length decreased significantly in the dual-task condition as compared to the single-task condition. 7) There was no significant difference in spatial symmetry. Conclusion: Performing dual tasks decreases gait velocity, paretic swing phase, and non-paretic step length, while it increases non-paretic double limb support. In addition, although there is no difference in temporospatial symmetry, there is high inter-subject variability in temporospatial symmetry. Thus, dual tasks should be selected in accordance with the functional level of the hemiplegic patient, and inter-subject variability of the individual should be considered when dual tasks are considered for gait-training of hemiplegic patients.
Objective: Mirror therapy is one of the promising methods suggested for the upper limb rehabilitation of stroke patients. While mirror therapy was presented to be effective in improving motor function of stroke patients, problems were raised as preceding studies had various methods in applying mirror therapy. Some studies even reported no effect in mirror therapy. Our supposition for the reason of such problems was a decrease of attention on the illusive image during mirror therapy of stroke patients, and we aimed to observe this. Design: A cross-sectional preliminary study. Methods: Three hemiplegic acute patients were recruited for the traditional mirror therapy. It lasted for 30 minutes, and 12 different tasks were asked to perform. All procedures were video-recorded, and Observer XT was used to analyse mirror-gazing time, gaze-distracted time, preparation time, frequency of mirror gazing, frequency of distraction, frequency of preparation for treatment. Results: Subjects spent an average of 4-5 minutes having instructions about the mirror therapy intervention (preparation duration), an average of 11 minutes watching the mirror during therapy (mirror-gazing duration), and the rest of 14-15 minutes looking around the environment (gaze-distracted duration). During the mirror therapy, the number of distracted moments (frequency of distraction) was eight times more than focusing on the mirror (frequency of mirror gazing). Conclusions: Once the patient looks at the mirror, it only lasts about 5 seconds on average. Thus, we confirmed that patients could not concentrate on the illusion during the session and therefore it may have affected the effectiveness of the therapy.
