  • Histopathological changes of gills and caudal fins isolated from fishes, Cyprinus carpio, Carassius auratus, and Hernibarbus labeo, which were killed by oxygen deficiency or toxic chemicals, were studied. The toxic chemicals were HCl, NaOH, chloroform, benzene, heavy metals(Cu, Cr, Zn, Pb, Hg), and o-dichlorobenzene. The exposure level was enough to kill the fishes within 30 minutes. Oxygen deficient water was prepared by aeration of nitrogen gas and the oxygen concentration was less than l ppm. Cryocutting was used for the rapid preparation of tissue slides and the tissues were stained by hematoxylin/eosin. In the fishes killed by hazardous chemicals, congestion and/or hyperplasia of secondary lamella and erosion of fin were found as the major histopathological changes. Whereas, these characteristics were not observed in gills or caudal fins of fishes killed by oxygen deficiency. These different bioindications appeared in the fishes killed by toxic substances or natural causes, can be used for the rapid identification of the causes of fish kills.

  • DTBP (dimethyl 3,3`-dithiobispropionimidate) was applied to collagen and gelatin coating on BCP granules and a crosslinking agent. The DTBP crosslinking was done for decreasing the solubility of the coating and hence increasing the stability. The nanostructure of collagen and gelatin coating surfaces were observed by SEM technique. Based on the DSC thermograms and FT-IR spectrums, the crosslinkings were confirmed between collagen molecules and gelatin molecules. The compressive strength was measured before crosslinking and after that. In-vitro study was carried out by measuring cell viability and observing cell morphology after DTBP crosslinking. Moreover, the proliferation ability of MG-63 osteoblast-like cells on the crosslinked BCP granules was evaluated by Western blot assay. The BCP granules were implanted into rabbit femur for 4 weeks and 12 weeks. The bone tissue formation was analyzed with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and histological analysis was also carried out by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining for visualization of cells.

  • The author has studied histochemically on the giant cells appeqring in the 10 giant cell lesions which had been collected from the biopsies at the deaprtment of oral pathology, college of dentistry, Seoul national university and dental sections of several hospitals in Seoul. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The giant cells varied in size had 2 to 10 nuclei without any mitotic figures. 2. The giant cells showed high granularity in cytoplasm, extreme irregularity in outline of nuclear and cytoplasmic membrane, and very large and prominent nucleoli. 3. The giant cells were reacted moderately by Periodic Acid-Schiffraction. 4. The chtoplams of giant cells were stained moderately of deeply with Pyronin, and their nuclei with Methyl green. 5. In the sections stained with Iron-Hematoxylin, the giant cells showed microvacules and fine granular type mitochondria aggregated close to nuclei but not phagocytosed materials.

  • Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NS) which mimics malignancy both clinically and histopathologically is an uncommon benign, self-limiting inflammatory disease of the mucus-secreting minor salivary glands. The lesion is believed to be the result of vascular ischemia that may be initiated by trauma. Till date, the diagnosis of NS remains a challenge. This report demonstrates a case of NS in a 73-year-old male patient who presented with an ulcerative lesion in his palate. He had a history of local trauma and was long-term user of salbutamol inhaler. An incisional biopsy was carried out and the diagnosis was established through history, clinical examination, histopathology using Hematoxylin and Eosin stain. The patient was given symptomatic treatment and the lesion healed in about 7 weeks.

  • An oval-shaped mass with a smooth surface was found in the ear canal of a 22-month-old male infant. Although the mass appeared to be almost entirely blocking the ear canal, it was successfully removed under a surgical microscope without general anesthesia at the outpatient department. Under an optical microscope with hematoxylin and eosin staining, the specimen was observed to have a cuticle with a serrated surface and a pore canal, as well as parts of the capitulum, salivary glands, muscles, midgut, and the legs. The specimen was identified as a hard tick of the family Ixodidae, based on gross and histological findings. This paper is the first report in Korea on the diagnosis and treatment of a tick bite in the ear canal.

  • A total of 77 Black Bengal goats (67 females and 10 males) of 3.5 to 5.0 years old between 18 and 20 kg liveweights were used in this study. The whole liver with gall-bladder from respective carcass was collected at slaughter following fecal and postmortem examinations. Tissue sections of all lobes of each liver were prepared and stained with hematoxylin and eosin following a standard procedure. Results confirmed the presence of flukes surrounded by fibrous capsule in the liver. All the animals were suffering from chronic Fasciola gigantica infections. The blood vessels in most of the liver tissue were thickened due to proliferation of fibrous tissue around them. Focal infiltration of lymphocytes in the lobules, patches of focal accumulation of neutrophils and eosinophils were found in all the liver tissue. Proliferations of new bile ductules in the hepatic trinity around the bile ducts that were clogged by the flukes were also observed in most tissue sections.

  • The tegument of tapeworms is known to be composed of an outer syncytial cytoplasm layer which includes microtriches and cytoplasmic organelles (= syncytial layer), and a parenchymatous cytoplasm layer that contains subtegumental cell nuclei (= subtegumental layer) and organelles. In the present study, separation of the syncytial layer of the sparganum, the plerocercoid stage of Spirometra mansoni, was tried using urea as the chemical reagent. Histological sections were prepared to visualize the status of separation after staining with hematoxylin and eosin. The results showed that the syncytial layer of the sparganum tegument which includes microtriches and cytoplasmic organelles were successfully separated from the parenchyma using 3 M urea.
