Titanium's importance as a mineral resource is increasing, but the Korean industry depends on imports. Ilmenite is the principal titanium ore. However, research and development from raw materials have not been investigated yet in detail. Hence, measures to secure a stable titanium supply chain are urgently needed. Accordingly, through beneficiation technology, we evaluated the possibility of technological application for the efficient recovery of valuable minerals. As a result of the experiments, we confirmed that mineral particles existed as fine particles due to weathering, making recovery through classification difficult. Consequently, applying beneficiation technologies, i.e., specific gravity separation, magnetic separation, and flotation, makes it possible to recover valuable minerals such as hematite and rutile. However, there are limitations in increasing the quality and yield of TiO2 due to the mineralogical characteristic of the hematite and rutile contained in titanium ore. Hametite is combined with rutile even at fine particles. Therefore, it is essential to develop mineral processing routes, to recover iron, vanadium, and rare earth elements as resources. On that account, we used grinding technology that improves group separation between constituent minerals and magnetic separation technology that utilizes the difference in magnetic sensitivity between fine mineral particles. The development of beneficiation technology that can secure the economic feasibility of valuable materials after reforming iron oxide and titanium oxide components is necessary.
We are conducting research and development of magnetic filters for magnetic separation targeting paramagnetic materials. In order to develop a new magnetic filter with a large magnetic gradient, stainless fiber (SUS430, 120 mm × 3 mm) with a triangular cross section was sintered with a high void ratio (~ 70%) and the magnetic filter (20 mm × 2 mm) was created. When this magnetic filter was used to perform magnetic separation of hematite (particle size 50 ㎛) under a maximum magnetic flux density of 1.49 T, high separation rates were obtained.

Hematite reduction using hydrogen was conducted and the various process parameters were closely observed. A lab scale fluidized bed unit was designed especially for this study. The optimal values of the gas velocity, reduction time and temperature were evaluated. The values which indicated the highest reduction rate were set as fixed parameters for the following tests starting with the reduction time of 30 minutes and 750 ℃ of temperature. Among these variables the one with the highest interest was the gas specific consumption. It will tell the amount of the gas which is required to achieve a reduction rate of over 90% at the optimal conditions. This parameter is important for the scale up of the lab scale unit. 1,500 Nm3/ton-ore was found to be the optimal specific gas consumption rate at which the reduction rates exhibit the highest values for hematite.
Needle-like $\alpha-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ particles as precursor for magnetic recording media were prepared directly from amorphous ferric hydroxide in the aqueous solution by hydrothermal reaction. Ellipsoidal or rectangular $\alpha-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ particles were formed in the range of pH 10.75~11.75. The length and acicularity of $\alpha-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ particles were decreased gradually with increasing of citric acid concentration. The formation of needle-like $\alpha-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ particles was inhibited above citric acid concentration of $1.5{\times}10^{-4}\;mol$. We can synthesize $\alpha-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ particles with the most superior acicularity at $140^{\circ}C$ and can not expect a good needle-like particles above $220^{\circ}C$.

Mill scale, an iron waste, was used to separate magnetite particles for the adsorption of phosphate from aqueous solution. Mill scale has a layered structure composed of wustite (FeO), magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$), and hematite ($Fe_2O_3$). Because magnetite shows the highest magnetic property among these iron oxides, it can be easily separated from the crushed mill scale particles. Several techniques were employed to characterize the separated particles. Mill scale-derived magnetite particles exhibited a strong uptake affinity to phosphate in a wide pH range of 3-7, with the maximum adsorptive removal of 100%, at the dosage of 1 g/L, pH 3-5. Langmuir isotherm model well described the equilibrium data, exhibiting maximum adsorption capacities for phosphate up to 4.95 and 8.79 mg/g at 298 and 308 K, respectively. From continuous operation of the packed-bed column reactor operated with different EBCT (empty bed contact time) and adsorbent particle size, the breakthrough of phosphate started after 8-22 days of operation. After regeneration of the column reactor with 0.1N NaOH solution, 95-98% of adsorbed phosphate could be detached from the column reactor.
Wood-based nanocomposite electrode materials were synthesized for application in supercapacitors by mixing nanostructured hematite (Fe2O3) with highly porous activated carbon (AC) produced from the wood-waste of Pinus roxburghii. The AC was characterized using various instrumental techniques and the results showed admirable electrochemical properties, such as high surface area and reasonable porosity. Firstly, AC was tested as an electrode material for supercapacitors and it showed a specific capacitance of 59.02 Fg-1 at a current density of 1 Ag-1, cycle life of 84.2% after 1,000 cycles (at a current density of 3 Ag-1), and energy density of 5.1 Wh/kg at a power density of 135 Wkg-1. However, when the AC was composited with different ratios of Fe2O3 (1:1, 2:1, and 1:2), there was an overall improvement in its electrochemical performance. Among the 3 ratios, 2:1 (AC:Fe2O3) had the best specific capacitance of 102.42 Fg-1 at 1 Ag-1, cycle life of 94.4% capacitance after 1,000 cycles (at a current density of 3 Ag-1), and energy density of 8.34 Wh/kg at a power density of 395.15 Wkg-1 in 6 M KOH electrolyte in a 3-electrode experimental setup with a high working voltage of 1.55 V. Furthermore, when Fe2O3 was doubled, 1:2 (AC:Fe2O3), the electrochemical capacitive performance of the electrode twisted and deteriorated due to either the accumulation of Fe2O3 particles within the composite or higher bulk resistance value of pure Fe2O3.
Barium ferrites (BaFe12O19) were synthesized at the various temperature by the coprecipitation-oxidation method. X-ray diffraction Rietveld analysis for barium ferrites were performed, their microstructures were observed and their magnetic properties were measured, in order to analyze the crystal structures and determine the optimal temperature of heat-treatment. The barium ferrite, its average particle size 80 nm, was formed at 600℃ through the hematite (α-Fe2O3), but the site occupations of the Fe's in tetrahedral and bipyramidal sites and of the Ba relatively low. Increasing the heating temperature, these occupations and the magnetization increased, and the crystal c-axis decreased. These changes were very small at the heat treatment of above 800℃, but the particles were rapidly grown. It is suggested that the optimal temperature of heat-treatment is 800℃, at which temperature crystal structure is relatively stable and the particles hardly ever grow.
The frictional properties of automotive brake pads with four different ceramic materials such as magnesia, hematite, alumina, and zircon were investigated. A Krauss type friction tester using gray iron disks was used to examine the friction coefficient, intensity of friction force oscillation, and the tribe-surfaces. Results showed that the friction coefficient increased as the hardness of abrasives increases. Friction oscillation was also increased with hardness of the abrasives. However, the friction materials containing less abrasive particles produced stable friction films on the sliding surface. The transition between two-body and three body abrasion during sliding also played a crucial role in destructing the friction film on the pad surface and in determining various frictional properties.

In steel factory, hot roller cleaning process produces a lot of iron oxide particles called as mill scale. Major components of these particles are wustite (FeO), magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$), and hematite ($Fe_2O_3$). In this study, we tried to produce pure magnetite from the mill scale because of the largest phosphate adsorption capacity of the magnetite. The mill scale was treated with acid (HCl+$H_2O_2$), base (NaOH), and acid-base ($H_2SO_4$+NaOH). Batch adsorption tests showed the acid and/or base treatment could increase the phosphate adsorption capacity of the iron oxides from 0.28 to over 3.11 mgP/g. Magnetite, which could be obtained by acid and base treatment of the mill scale, showed the best adsorption capacity. From the kinetic analysis, both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm well described the phosphate adsorption behavior of the magnetite. In Langmuir model, maximum phosphate adsorption capacity was found to be 5.1 mgP/g at $20^{\circ}C$.

There should not be ion exchange resin particles in S/G sludge. The suspicious spherical resin particles observed in S/G sludge sample were characterized for particle size distribution under optical microscope using the micro-technique, for element analysis by the electron probe micro analysis (EPMA), and for molecular identification by the IR spectroscopy The particle sizes are distributed from 1 to 200 ${\mu}m$ for the sludge, while 40 to 500 ${\mu}m$ for the spherical resin particles. The results of the elemental analysis showed different major impurities: Si, Al, Mn, Cr, Ni, Zn and Ti for the sludge particles, while Si, Cu, Zn for the spherical resin particles. However, both particles contain Fe as a matrix of hematite ($Fe_{3}O_4$). IR spectrum of the spherical particles was quite different from that of ion exchange resins used in S/G system. These results indicate that the spherical particles are not related to ion exchange resin particles and formed by the process of the sludge formation.
