A Survey of Dung Beetles Infected with Larval Nematodes with Particular Note on Copris lunaris Beetles as a Vector for Gongylonema sp. in Iran

  • Dung beetles (family Scarabaeidae) are one of the largest families of beetles worldwide. Due to biological behavior of these arthropods, they are considered to play an important role in the life cycle of some helminths. In the present study, dung beetles collected from cattle pastures in rural areas of Ardabil province, north-west of Iran were examined for infection with larval stages of helminths. According to the results, nematodes of 2 genera were identified including Rhabditis and Gongylonema. The more common species was Rhabditis sp. which was found in 9 species of beetles. Out of 15 different species of dung beetles, Copris lunaris was the only scarabaeid to be found naturally infected with the larval stages of Gongylonema sp. Our new findings introduce C. lunaris as a potential biological vector for transmission of Gongylonema sp. to vertebrates in the surveyed region.

라오스 메콩강 유역 Pakse 지역 주민의 장내 윤충류 감염률 조사 (A small-scale survey of intestinal helminthic infections among the residents near Pakse, Laos)

  • 라오스 남부의 메콩강 유역에서 위치한 Pakes 지역 주민의 장내 윤충류 감염 상황을 조사하였다. 대상 인원은 현지 보건소 직원 및 가족 등 성인 90명과 초등학교 학생 47명으로 모두 137명이었다. 검사방법으로는 Kato-Katz 셀로판후층도말법을 이용하였고, 1인당 1회 검사하였다. 검사 결과, 총 충란 양성률은 75.9%로 매우 높았고, 검출된 윤층은 Opisthorchis viverrini (평균 양성률 43.8%), 회충 (26.3%), 편충 (19.0%), 구충 (19.0%), 분선층 (2.2%), 유. 무구조충 (0.7%) 및 메콩주협흡충 (Schistosoma mekongi) (1.5%)이었다. O. viverrini 충란 양성자 3인으로부터 충체를 회수하고자 프라지콴텔로 치료하고 하제를 부여한 바 설사변에서 O. viverrini 성충 5, 10 및 395마리를 각각 회수할 수 있었다. 이상의 결과로 라오스의 Pakse 지역은 O. viverrini 및 토양매개성 윤충 감염이 농후하며, 메콩주혈흡충의 생활사가 이루어지고 있을 것으로 추측되었다.

Morphological and Molecular Diagnosis of Necator americanus and Ancylostoma ceylanicum Recovered from Villagers in Northern Cambodia

  • Human hookworm infections caused by adult Ancylostoma spp. and Necator americanus are one of the most important tropical diseases. We performed a survey of intestinal helminths using the Kato-Katz fecal examination technique targeting 1,156 villagers residing in 2 northern provinces (Preah Vihear and Stung Treng) of Cambodia in 2018. The results revealed a high overall egg positive rate of intestinal helminths (61.9%), and the egg positive rate of hookworms was 11.6%. Nine of the hookworm egg positive cases in Preah Vihear Province were treated with 5-10 mg/kg pyrantel pamoate followed by purging with magnesium salts, and a total of 65 adult hookworms were expelled in diarrheic stools. The adult hookworms were analyzed morphologically and molecularly to confirm the species. The morphologies of the buccal cavity and dorsal rays on the costa were observed with a light microscope, and the nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene were analyzed. The majority of the hookworm adults (90.7%) were N. americanus, whereas the remaining 9.3% were Ancylostoma ceylanicum, a rare hookworm species infecting humans. The results revealed a high prevalence of hookworm infections among people in a northern part of Cambodia, suggesting the necessity of a sustained survey combined with control measures against hookworm infections.

Equine helminths: prevalence and associated risk factors in Gamo Gofa Zone, Ethiopia

  • Importance: Equines are indispensable in reducing the huge burden on children and women and income generation. On the other hand, minimal attention is given to improving their health and welfare. Objective: This study examined the prevalence and associated risk factors of helminth parasites of equine in the Gamo Gofa Zone. Methods: A cross-sectional study was employed from June 2019 to March 2020. The study districts and Kebeles were selected purposively based on agroecology whereas selection of study households and animals were performed based on simple random sampling techniques. Identification of nematode, trematode parasite ova and larvae of D. arnfieldi were done by floatation, sedimentation, and Baermann techniques respectively. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression was applied to estimate the prevalence and association of risk factors with helminth parasites. Results: The overall helminth parasite prevalence in the study area was 90.4%, 425/470 (95% [CI], 87.16-92.9). The prevalence of Strongyle, Fasciola, O. equi, P. equorum, D. arnfieldi, and mixed parasite infections were 65.1%, 21.7%, 17.4%, 34%, 34%, and 58.1%, respectively. Infections from Fasciola species and D. arnfieldi infection were four ([AOR], 4.4; 95% CI, 2-9.4) and two times (AOR, 2; 95% CI, 1.1-3.6) respectively more likely occur in donkeys than in mules. The occurrence of Strongyle species in midland agroecology was two times (AOR, 2.6; 95% CI, 1.4-4.7) more likely than lowland agroecology. Conclusions and Relevance: The present study identified diverse species of equine helminth parasites that necessitate urgent disease control and prevention measures.

전남 소록도 주민의 장내기생충 감염실태 및 조충의 치료성적 (A Study on the Intestinal Helminths of the Patients in a Leprosarium in Korea)

  • A total of 2,026 leprosy patients of the National Sorokdo Hospital was examined their infestparasites by cellophane thick smear method in January, 1983. The egg positive cases of Taenia spp. were treated with bithionol and the segments of Taenia were collected for species identification. The results were as follows: 1. Total egg Positive rate of any kind helminth was 78.2% and cumulative total was 85.2%. The egg positive rate for each helminth was as follow; Taenia spp. 3.4%, Ascaris lumbricoides 4.5%, Trichuris trichiura 72.1%, Clonorchis sinensis 2.8% and other 0.05%. 2. A total of 66 Taenia eggpPositive cases was treated; out of them proglottids of Taenia were collected from 26 cases. All of the collected worms were identified as T. saginata. The results revealed signiBicantly high egg positive rate of T. trichiura. However, A. lumbricoides was found to be controlled considerably by repeated chemotherapy during past 3 years. If chromotherapeutic agent is replaced with oxantel-pyrantel tablet, better result is expected. No clue was found for prevalence of T. sodium from both human and the pig in the island.

  • 강원도 화천군에 위치한 한 군부대 장병 113명의 대변을 검사하여 간흡충(6.2%) Metnonsmw spy.(2.7%). 람블편모충(3.5%)의 감염자를 찾을 수 있었다. 이 중에서 간흡충 감염자 7명 중 6명이 경상남도 출신이었다. 경상남도 출신 16명 중 6명이 양성으로(37.5%) 다른 지역 출신(1.0%) 보다 높은 양성률을 보이는 것을 보아, 입대전에 감염되었을 것으로 추정 한다.

  • The NGO program of "intestinal parasite Control among primary Schoolchildren of Lao PDR", supported by KOICA and implemented by KAHP, has started in 1999 and will be executed until 2004. Under cooperation of the LAo Ministry of Health, WHO, Korean Embassy and KOCIA, for the last 4 years, KHIP has conducted parasitological survey throughout the country, supply of medical equipment and anti-helminthics and treatment of positive people. The results of the survey is as below : A total of 29,846 stool specimens were collected from primary schoolchildren from May 2000 to June 2002 and examined once with the cellphone thick smear. By species, the rate for Ascaris lumbricoides was 34.9%, hookworm 19.1%, Trichuris trihiura 25.8%, Opisthorchis iverrini 10.9%, Taenia spp. 0.6% and Hymenolepis spp. 0.1%. The northern mountainous regions showed a higher prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths. The regions along the Mekong River such as Khammuane, Saravane or Svannakhet Province showed a higher prevalence of fish-borne parasites.

Trematodes of the family Opisthorchiidae: a minireview

  • Examination of the original descriptions of genera placed within the family Oposthorchiidae has revealed that only 33 of the original 43 genera are valid members of this family Further study of these descriptions should also reveal that many of the subfamilies are also invalid. With reference to the original descriptions of these genera, and subsequent literature, a brief survey of the family has been compiled. Information on the spectrum of definitive hosts that these helminths parasitize is provided, as well as information on the life cycles, geographic distribution, and socioeconomic impacts of the family. More in-depth information is given on those species that are of particular medical importance; namely, Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis viverrini and O. felineus. The final aims of this review are to provide information on the entire genera of the family Opisthorchiidae, which will aid understanding of the phylogenetic relationships not only within the family, but also within the Class Trematoda.

춘천에서 잡은 시궁쥐(Rattus norvegicus)의 윤충 감염 (Helminths in Rattus norvegicus captured in Chunchon, Korea)

  • 1994년 4월 부터 10월까지 춘천시내 한 동물농장에서 시궁쥐를 잡아 간파 장에서 윤충의 감염상 태를 조사하였다. 모두 43마리 가운데서 간모세선충 11예 축소조충 14예 고양이조충의 조충애벌레(metacestode)가 28예에서 발견되었다. 이 시궁쥐들은 조사 지역의 인수공통감염증의 원천이 될 수 있다.

Regulation of Th2 Cell Immunity by Dendritic Cells

  • Th2 cell immunity is required for host defense against helminths, but it is detrimental in allergic diseases in humans. Unlike Th1 cell and Th17 cell subsets, the mechanism by which dendritic cells modulate Th2 cell responses has been obscure, in part because of the inability of dendritic cells to provide IL-4, which is indispensable for Th2 cell lineage commitment. In this regard, immune cells other than dendritic cells, such as basophils and innate lymphoid cells, have been suggested as Th2 cell inducers. More recently, multiple independent researchers have shown that specialized subsets of dendritic cells mediate Th2 cell responses. This review will discuss the current understanding related to the regulation of Th2 cell responses by dendritic cells and other immune cells.
