  • Combustion instability is one of the most difficult problems in the development of liquid rocket engines. One of the damping devices for combustion instability is helmholtz resonator. Orifice length is one of factors for designing it. In this study, effects of orifice length are investigated by an experimental tests and a linear acoustic analysis. Damping capacity was improved by the increase of the length of resonator. And the results of an experimental tests and a linear acoustic analysis are showed similar tendency. Also, effects of supplied SPL(sound pressure level) are investigated and the results show that nonlinear effects are increase by the increase of supplied SPL.

  • Buffeting noise through a rear window in an automobile is investigated by using lattice Boltzmann method. The generation mechanism of the buffeting noise can be understood as the resonance mechanism in a Helmholtz resonator, which is driven by the convecting vortex in a shear-layer flow over the neck of the resonator. Two methods to suppress the buffeting noise are proposed, and their effects are quantitatively assessed. Opening front window reduces the observed buffeting tonal noise by 25 dB and the overall SPL by 4 dB, and the installation of a Helmholtz resonator acting as a dynamic damper reduces the tonal component that by 35 dB and the overall SPL by 10 dB.

  • With the increased requirement for automobile noise, a design fo mufflers with higher performances becomes more important in recent days. For a design of some mufflers, it must satisfy both minimizing back pressure and maximizing sound attenuation in broad range of frequecny. Even for a simple Helmholtz resonator, an important element in a muffler, a resonator design with accurate resonant frequency is difficult if one want to consider standing waves within the cavity. In this paper, the genetic algorithm, one of the optimization technique with high capability of global fittest solution and robust convergence, is applied to the design process of mufflers. Results show that the genetic algorithm can be successfully and efficiently used to find the fittest model for both mufflers and Helmoltz resonators.

  • The volumetric efficiency is significantly affected by the behavior of pressure wave in induction system and exhaust pipe. By the motion of the piston, there exist pressure fluctuation in induction system which produce waves. Waves are propagated along a pipe bi-directional as they propagated through it, making compression wave and rare-faction(expansion) wave. These wave phenomena can affect to the volumetric efficiency. As a method of improvement of the volumetric efficiency, fuel economy and pollutant emission reduction particularly in low engine speeds, a side-branch additional tunable helmholtz resonator on the secondary pipe of intake system is proposed by use of their acoustic vibrations. Some of results are presented which deal with their physical phenomena for the wave action of intake system in a four-stroke three cylinders diesel engine.

  • The gaseous fuel injection(GFI) type of LPG fuel-supply system is more advantageous than liquefied fuel injection(LFI) from the viewpoint of durability and cost reduction. However, compared with LFI types of LPG fuel-supply systems, in the GFI systems it is difficult to achieve precision fuel metering because of the compressible characteristic of the gaseous fuel. In this study, a Helmholtz resonator is proposed as an appropriate system for precision fuel metering in GFI systems, and the effects of the Helmholtz resonator on the fuel metering are simulated by the commercial flow-network-analysis package Flowmaster.

  • Backhole, which is one of geometric parameters in swirl coaxial injectors, is found to affect the inner flow motion and the acoustic characteristics of the swirl injector. In order to analyze the effect of the backhole as a damping device such as acoustic cavities of the combustion chamber, it was regarded as a Helmholtz or Quarter-wave resonator. As a result, it is known that the swirl coaxial injector with the backhole may produce the resonant frequency coincided with the frequency of the combustion chamber.

  • Helmholtz resonator is used to reduce noise of the narrow frequency band. It has high transmission loss at its resonance frequency. The silencer that combines many resonators could control broadband noise at low frequency. To convey this rather simple idea, serial and parallel arrangement of resonators have been tested to obtain high transmission loss characteristics in the band of which are selects. Theoretical and experimental results explain these characteristics in the absence of mean flow. The change of acoustic characteristics by the resonance frequencies and resonators arrangement are explained by using the equivalent Impedance analysis that is defined in this paper. It shows that the transmission loss has a maximum value when the separation distance between each resonator is λ/4 of its wavelength.

  • This paper deals with transmission loss characteristics of the panel type silencer to control low frequency noise. The panel type silencer is composed of many Helmholtz resonators by side branch. Each resonator has high transmission loss on the narrow band of its resonance frequency. Direct arrangement of the resonators increases mainly the magnitude of transmission loss. If we arrange the resonators in a row, the peak and band of transmission loss are increased. This makes the resonator array to have high transmission loss in the broader band. Using this idea, we design a silencer that has broader band characteristics and smaller volume.

  • Helmholtz resonators have high transmission loss in a narrow band at the resonance frequency. The transmission loss characteristics of resonators at high sound pressure levels can change due to variations of the impedance as a result of nonlinear behavior. Different sound pressure levels are applied to each resonator when resonators were arranged along the path. Therefore, impedance variation due to incident sound pressure level should be considered in order to predict the transmission loss.

  • The purpose of the study is to identify a sound generating organ that has a major influence on the central frequency of the cicadas with the Helmholtz resonator structure for the first time. The sound of cicadas Cryptotympana atrata and Hyalessa fuscata were recorded and analyzed, then the motion of the tymbals was analyzed with a high-speed camera to compare the relationship between the frequency of sound and the motion of the tymbals. As a result, there was little difference in the frequency distribution of calling song and scream for two species. The tymbals of C. atrata oscillated in three vibration modes, while those of H. fuscata oscillated in one mode. There was no difference in the frequency of both tymbals of both cicadas, and three vibration modes of C. atrata generated sound with different frequency bands. The frequency band of tymbals and the central frequency band of calling song were very similar. In conclusion, it is presumed that the frequency of the cicadas with the Helmholtz resonator structure was determined by mode frequency of the tymbals than resonance condition of the abdomen.
