  • Background: Steam generator (SG) is one of the significant components in the nuclear steam supply system. A variety of SGs have been designed and used in nuclear reactor systems. Every SG has advantages and disadvantages. A brief account of some of the existing SG designs is presented in this study. A high surface to volume ratio of a SG is required in small modular reactors to occupy the least space. In this paper, performance improvement for SGs of integral small modular reactor is proposed. Aims/Methods: For this purpose, cross-grooved microfins have been incorporated on the inner surface of the helical tube to enhance heat transfer. The primary objective of this work is to investigate thermal-hydraulic behavior of the proposed improvements through modeling in RELAP5-3D. Results and Conclusions: The results are compared with helical-coiled SGs being used in IRIS (International Reactor Innovative and Secure). The results show that the tube length reduces up to 11.56% keeping thermal and hydraulic conditions fixed. In the case of fixed size, the steam outlet temperature increases from 590.1 K to 597.0 K and the capability of power transfer from primary to secondary also increases. However, these advantages are associated with some extra pressure drop, which has to be compensated.

  • The absorption of vapor involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the vapor/liquid system. In this paper, a numerical study for vapor absorption process into LIBr-H$_2$O solution film flowing over helical absorber has been carried out. Axisymmetric cylindrical coordinate system was adopted to model the helical tube and the transport equations were solved by the finite volume method. The effects of operating conditions, such as the cooling water temperature. the system pressure, the film Reynolds number and the solution inlet concentration have been investigated in view of the absorption mass flux and the total absorption mass flux and the total absorption rate. The results for the temperature and concentration profiles, as well as the local absorption mass flux at the helical absorber are presented. It is shown that solution inlet concentration affected other than operation conditions for a mass flux.

  • Boiling heat transfer characteristics of a two-phase closed thermosyphons with various helical grooves are studied experimentally and a mathematical correlation is developed to predict the performance of such thermosyphons. The study focuses on the boiling heat transfer characteristics of two-phase closed thermosyphons with copper tubes having 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 internal helical grooves. A two-phase closed thermosyphon with plain copper tube having the same inner and outer diameter as those of grooved tubes is also tested for comparison. Water, methanol and ethanol are used as working fluid. The effects of the number of grooves, various working fluids, operating temperature and heat flux are investigated experimentally. From these experimental results, a mathematical model is developed. In the present model, boiling of liquid pool in the evaporator is considered for the heat transfer mechanism of the thermosyphons. And also the effects of the number of grooves, the various working fluids, the operating temperature and the heat flux are brought into consideration. A good agreement between the boiling heat transfer coefficient of the thermosyphon estimated from experimental results and the predictions from the present mathematical correlation is obtained. The experimental results show that the number of grooves, the amount of the working fluid and the various working fluids are very important factors for the operation of thermosyphons. Also, the thermosyphons with internal helical grooves can be used to achieve some inexpensive and compact heat exchangers in low temperature.

  • In this study, three-dimensional numerical calculations are peformed to simulate the flow and heat transfer in helically coiled tube steam generator employing a commercial CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code. The problem considered herein includes the boiling phase change flow of tube side fluid and the single-phase counter-current flow of shell side hot fluid transferring heat to the tube side flow thru the tube wall. Detailed investigations are performed for both shell-side and tube-side flow fields in terms of density and volume fractions of each phase of fluids as well as for the tube wall heat transfer field in terms of heat transfer coefficients.

  • Experimental study on the fluidelastic instability (FEI) of a curved tube bundle in single phase downward cross flow is investigated for the design qualification and analysis input preparation of helical coiled steam generator tubing. A 6×9 normal square curved tube array with equal and different vertical/horizontal pitch-to-diameter ratio was under-tested up to 6 m/s in term of gap flow velocity to measure the critical velocity for FEI. The critical velocity for FEI was measured at the turning point from the vibration amplitude plot along the gap flow velocity. Our test results were compared with straight tube results and published data in the design guideline. The applicability of the current design guidelines to a curved tube bundle is also assessed. We found that introducing frequency difference in a curved tube array increases the critical velocity for fluidelastic instability.

  • This study concerns the performance of condensation heat transfer in plain and grooved thermosyphons. Distilled water, methanol, ethanol have been used as the working fluids. In the present work, a copper tube of the length of 1200mm and 14.28mm of inside diameter is used as the container of the thermosyphon. Each of the evaporator and the condenser section has a length of 550mm, while the remaining part of the thermosyphon tube is adiabatic section. A study was carried out with the characteristics of heat transfer of the thermosyphon 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 helical grooves in which boiling and condensation occur. The liquid filling as the ratio of working fluid volume to total volume of thermosyphon, the kinds of working fluid, the inclination angle, grooves and operating temperature have been used as the experimental parameters. The experimental results show that the number of grooves, the amount of the working fluid, the kind of working fluid, angle of inclination angle are very important factors for the operation of thermosyphon. The maximum heat transfer was obtained when the liquid fill was about 20 to 25 % of the thermosyphon volume. The relatively high rates of heat transfer have been achieved in the thermosyphon with grooves. The helical grooved thermosyphon having 70 to 80 grooves in water, 60 to 70 grooves in methanol and 70 to 80 grooves in ethanol shows the best heat transfer coefficient in both condensation.

  • Pressure drop at a helical square duct orifice is numerically evaluated. The orifice is installed at the entrance of a once-through steam generator tube to suppress flow instabilities. The calculated results are compared with the available experimental correlations, and showed good agreement. Effects of curvature ratio and characteristics of the secondary flow with Reynolds number are reported. Through the numerical simulations, pressure drop mechanisms were well understood inside the compact and complicated orifice geometry.

  • The spring back taking place after the coiling process of steam generator tube leads to the dimensional inaccuracy. In order to reduce the spring back, tension force was applied to the one end of the tube during forming. In this work, parametric study using FEM was performed to find the appropriate magnitude of tension force. The force that induces minimum spring back was found by simultaneously taking account if spring back amount, cross-sectional ovality, and thickness of the tube wall after deformation. In addition, stress relieving by heat treatment was also simulated as an alternative to the former method. The latter was found to be more effective under the given constraints.

  • The cooling heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of $CO_2$(R-744) in helical coil copper tubes were investigated experimentally The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter. a pre-heater and a inclined helical coil type gas cooler (test section). The test section consists of a smooth copper tube of 2.45 and 4.55mm inner diameter The refrigerant mass fluxes were varied from 200 to $600 [kg/m^2s]$ and the inlet pressures of 9as cooler were 7.5 to 10.0 [MPa]. The heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ in helical coil tubes increase with the increase of mass flux and gas cooling pressure of $CO_2$. The pressure drop of $CO_2$ in the gas cooler shows a relatively food agreement with those Predicted by Ito's correlation developed for single-phase in helical coil tubes. Though a few correlation available with the data. the local heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ agrees well with those presented by Pitla et al. among the predictions. However at the region near pseudo-critical temperature. the experiment data indicate higher values than the Pitla et al. correlation.
