  • Objectives: This case study reports on the effects of Korean medicine on a corticobasal syndrome with apraxia. Methods: We used acupuncture, bee-venom, pharmaco-acupuncture and herbal medicine to treat a corticobasal syndrome patient during hospitalization for 32 days. We observed changes in the UPDRS score, hand movement by opening and closing of hands, the making of a tower with 10 blocks and writing. Results: The hand movement count was improved from 2 to 10. The time needed for making a tower with 10 blocks decreased from 68 to 50 sec, and the number of stroke when writing the Korean word '철' decreased. In addition, the UPDRS score was decreased after treatment from 27 to 24. Conclusion: This clinical case study suggests that Korean medicine treatment could be used in the treatment of corticobasal syndrome.

The treatment effect was evaluated by Numerical Rating Scale(NRS), Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory(NPSI), and 36-item Short-form Health Survey(SF-36). ■ Results After the treatment, the NRS score of pain intensity was reduced from moderate to mild degree. The total NPSI score and subscores also decreased, as the various features of the pain were relieved. The SF-36 score increased, as the patient's quality of life improved. ■ Conclusion This case study suggests that Gami SSanghwa-tang, could be effective in reducing pain and improving quality of life of patients suffering from central post-stroke pain.

  • In an effort to expand working opportunities for women and encourage childbirth, the government of Korea introduced the free infant care policy in 2013. This policy, however, was controversial with regard to issues, such as budget shortages and dissatisfaction based on socioeconomic status. In addition, the lack of evidence-based data regarding adequate age criteria for the entry of children into childcare facilities was noted as a challenge. As child development professionals who are concerned with mental health issues, we investigated the influence and challenges of the free infant care policy with regard to infant mental health. In this review, we examined the policies enacted by developed countries, such as the United Kingdom (UK), and compared them with those in Korea. The childcare systems in Korea and the UK differ historically and socially, but show some similarities, such as maternal responsibility for parenting and household issues. Like Korea, the need for UK childcare facilities increased in the 1990's in response to market recovery and associated increase in female employment. Among the new policies in the UK, the Sure Start program has begun to provide integrated services for infants, particularly to those 0-4 years of age, who are vulnerable to social exclusion. Similar to the Dream Start program in Korea, it has been successful in providing family-related services, resulting in improvements in problematic behaviors of children, enhanced parenting skills, and decreased rates of severely injured children.

  • Objectives: This clinical study reports the effects of Cheonggansoyo-san (CSS) on three patients with glossodynia. Methods: Three patients with glossodynia were treated with CSS (i.e., an herbal medicine) and acupuncture. Numeric rating scales (NRSs) for glossodynia and dry mouth and hwa-byung questionnaire scores were evaluated, and the results from heart rate variability (HRV) evaluations were analyzed. Results: After treatment with CSS, three patients' glossodynia symptoms, such as burning sensations, tingling, and numbness of the tongue, were improved. NRS ratings for glossodynia and dry mouth and the hwa-byung questionnaire scores also improved, and HRV parameters were closer to the normal range. Conclusion: Cheonggansoyo-san could be used to treat glossodynia.

  • Objective: This clinical study reports on the effect of traditional Korean medicine on a patient with generalized anxiety disorder.Method: A patient who suffered from generalized anxiety disorder was treated with herbal medicine (Guibiondamtang-gami), acupuncture, moxibustion, and pharmacopuncture. We assessed the changes of anxiety-related symptoms with the state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) score, the Beck anxiety inventory (BAI) score, a heart rate variability (HRV) test, and a second derivative of photoplethymogram waveform (SDPTG) test. Results: After taking Guibiondamtang-gami for 22 days, the patient’s STAI score, BAI score, and LF/HF (low-frequency/high-frequency heart rate variability) ratio decreased, while the differential pulse wave index and stress power in the SDPTG test increased. Conclusion: This clinical case study has demonstrated that traditional Korean medicine may be an effective option for treating generalized anxiety disorder.
