This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of different levels of shading (0, 35, 55, 75, 95% to incident sunlight) on the growth of Hedera rhombea Bean and Pachysandra terminalis Sieb. et Zucc. in order to determine optimum light intensity for ground cover plants. H. rhombea showed a upright growth type under 95% shading and P. terminalis was highest under 35% shading. Number of branches was not significantly affected by shading levels. Stem diameter and length were reduced under shading from 35% to 95%. Leaf growth was vigorous under 35% and 55% shade condition. Leaves became longer with decreasing light intensity, but shorter in 95% shading than control. There was a slight trend that total chlorophyll and chlorophyll a, b contents increased with decreasing light intensity, and so did chlorophyll a/b ratio. Fresh and dry weight of both plants were higher under 35, 55, and 75% shading than control and 95% shading. Specific leaf weight tended to decrease with reduction of light intensity. Thus, optimum light intensity for growth of them may be 35 and 55% shading of incident sunlight. In addition, it is possible to grow them under even 75% shading of incident sunlight.
The aim of this study was to investigate the flora and distribution of evergreen plants in Busan from February 2003 to September 2004. A total of 68 evergreen plant taxa belonging to 33 families, 51 genera, 60 species, and 8 varieties were recognized in Busan. 9 species was included in evergreen plant taxa such as Akebia quinata, Rosa wichuraiana, Osmanthus heterophyllus, Lonicera japonica, Lonicera japonica var. repens, and Carex boottiana. In the forests of evergreen, the canopy consisted of tall trees such as Pinus thunbergii, and understatum trees such as Eurya japonica, Elaegnus macrophylla, and Euonymus japonica. Herb layer consisted of Rubus hirsutus, Hedera rhombea, and Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium. In addition to evergreen plant communities, the patchy spaced communities occurred Neolitsea sericea-Cinnamomum japonicum community, Ficus erecta community, Hedera rhombea-Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium community, Ardisia japonica community, Gleichenia dichotoma community, and G. Japonica community. For rate of appearance of species in 23 sites, 13 species was appeared more than 50% and 29 species less than 10%. There was marked a decrease in the number (density) of evergreen according to the geographic distances from seaside to inland.

Green areas and the area of available horizontal surfaces are gradually decreasing due to the overcrowding of buildings. It is adversely affecting the urban climate and ecosystem. However, the recognition of the importance of green areas is gradually increasing. As a result, the importance of wall greening using vertical surfaces is growing. However, despite the fact that domestic wall greening guidelines and institutions related to orientations restrict planting. there was no study to determine whether there were actual differences in plant growth due to orientations. Therefore, this study compared and analyzed the plant growth characteristics by orientations to apply actual wall greening to cities. The experiment was conducted from May to September 2020. First of all, three octave walls were constructed to measure the temperature, the illumination, and the length of the plants once a week. The plants included Parthenocissus tricuspidata, Hedera rhombea, and Euonymus radicans cv. Aueonmarinata Rehd plants. As a result of the study, Parthenocissus tricuspidata was prolific in the north, and Hedera rhombea, and Euonymus radicans cv. Aueonmarinata Rehd plants were prolific in the south. All three types of plants were prolific in June-July, and the Parthenocissus tricuspidata was prolific in grass-growing, and in August, all the walls were 100% covered. Hedera rhombea had the lowest rate of herbaceous growth, and the vertical coverate was also lower at an average of 45%, but among the three plants, the sheath of the horizontal surface coverate was the highest. Euonymus radicans cv. Aueonmarinata Rehd was low in the speed of herbaceous growth, and finally, the walls were 100% covered except for the north and northwest directions. It was found that not all plants used for wall greening show the same growth, and the difference in growth varies more depending on plants than the effect of orientations. Therefore, it is better to identify the characteristics of plant growth and plant suitable plants for each directions.
In order to acquire information on chloroplast DNA markers to evaluate the genetic diversity of evergreen broad leaved plants, we investigated the intraspecific variation of cpDNA in eight non-coding regions of nine species commonly distributed in East Asia. Although no variations were detected in psbA-trnH, rpoB-trnC, rpl16 and atpB-rbcL regions, a relatively large amount of intraspecific variations was detected in the psbC-trnS, rps16 and trnL-F regions. These results suggested that these three cpDNA markers are suitable to assess genetic diversity of the species investigated in this study. In contrast, intraspecific variations were detected in seven taxa except Hedera rhombea and Neolitsea aciculata. Neolitsea sericea and the taxa of Quercus had many polymorphic sites.
The vegetation of Odongdo island was surveyed over twenty-nine times from April, 1982 to August, 1983. This island is located at 127。46'05'∼127。39'37'E. longitude and 34。40'20'∼34。48'14'N. latitude. The vegetation of this island consisted of 94 families, 261 genera, 314 species, 53 varieties and 6 formae. And among them were 170 species of woody plants and 203 species of herbs. The community of evergreen broad-leaved trees comprised a total of 44 species including Sasa coreana Nakai and camellia japonica L. and the distribution of evergreen broad-leaved trees was good in this island as a whole. Sasa coreana Nakai, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii Nakai, Ficus erecta Thunb., Ficus nipponica Fr. et Sav, Stauntonia hexaphylla (Thunb.) Decne, Cinnamomum japonicum Sieb., Machilus thunbergii S. et Z., Lozoste lancifolia (S. et Z.) Bl., Ilex intergra Thunb., Camellia japonica Thunb., Hedera rhombea Bean and Ardisia japonica Bl. etc. in this island were autochthonous flora and their preservation is required.

The purpose of this study is to examine vegetation of the outer walls of the Jeongyi Town Wall in Jeju and analyze the characteristics and problems identified, for suggesting preliminary data for selecting species of plants appropriate for the greening of the walls in the southern temperate climate region, including Jeju. The result of this study is as follows. The number of plants growing naturally around the walls of the town was identified to be 52 taxa. Based on the list of naturalized plants, there are 5 taxa; Sonchus oleraceus, Houttuynia cordata, Crassocephalum crepidioides, Erigeron annuus and Lamium purpureum. The number of species by district was from 3 to 14 taxa with 7.1 taxa on average. Analyzing by the constancy class, plants in class III included Sedum bulbiferum, Trichosanthes kirilowii, Hedera rhombea and Boehmeria nivea. Manipulation of the species composition table shows that the number of plant species growing naturally around the walls of Jeongyi Town Wall is a total of 52 taxa, including 11 taxa by differential species of community and 41 taxa by companion species. The types of plants very useful for the covering of the walls are evergreen climbing vine, such as Hedera rhombea, Ficus thunbergii and Euonymus fortunei and deciduous climbing vine, such as Parthenocissus tricuspidata, Trichosanthes kirilowii and Paederia scandens. In addition, Ficus stipulata is identified as a vegetation more appropriate for the southern-ward lattice-blocked walls. Woody plants, such as Akebia quinata, Celastrus flagellaris, Ampelopsis brevipedunculata for. citrulloides, Rubus hirsutus, Clematis apiifolia and herbaceous plants, such as Dioscorea tenuipes, D. quinqueloba, D. nipponica, Cayatia japonica and Paederia scandens var. angustifolia are highly useful materials for climbing plants for covering the walls of the southern province. Pteridophyte, such as Lemmaphyllum microphyllum, Pteris multifida, Cyrtomium falcatum and Lygodium japonicumare suggested as very useful for increasing unique regional characteristics of the southern province, including Jeju.

This research is to propose a rational criterion of the selection and the management f the roadside trees, and to establish the planting design and system with the objective of improving the roadside environment. All of the roadside trees in each objective courses in Kangnung, and the soil disposition, hardness of the soil in the planting areas have been investigated. Also, we have surveyed the kinds of the trees which kandgnung inhabitants want. The conclusion is as follows Most of roadsides have trees, but they need the introduction of shrubs or ground covering plants according to the locations and the environmental conditions. We have selected nineteen species in regard to the roadside tree criterion and the growing conditions living in Kangnung. It is desirable that we make banding style planting space between each roadside tree to improve the low ratio of green coverage. We have found out that Ligustrum obtusifolium, Buxus micropnylla, Euonymus japonica, Rhododendron schlippenbachii, Phyllostachys nigro and Rosa rugosa, ect. are suitable. In order to soften and weaken the rigidity of the hard substances on a paved roadside, the climbers such as the perennial herbaceous flowering and hedera rhombea should be preferred rather than annual herbaceous flowering because of curtailment of expenditure. To posses a systematical greenery frame in kangnung, we have planned a planting design system that would expand the greenery space every year. Moreover, we have to make a plan to overcome space restrictions. We have established a flexible plan considering the roadside conditions and the improved standard planting methods with an ultimate aim to create a special roadside view.

The objective of this study is on suggesting the simulation model of 10 selected plants for the traffic noise barrier through field experiment by computer. The field experiment was carried out at the traffic noise barrier of Honam highway. The results are as follows. 1. It was identified that Paederia scandens, Celastrus Orbiculatus, Lonicera japonica, Wisteria floribunda, Parthenocissus tricuspidata and Parthenocissus quinquefolia grows well vertically and takes 3 years in covering completely. 2. It was identified that Trachelospermum asiaticum and Hedera rhombea, evergreen Climber(vine), grows slowly in comparative with other deciduous Climbers(vine), but give drivers good landscapes in winter. So those have considerable value in the south region of Taejeon. 3. It was identified that Wisteria jl.oribunda, Lonicera japonica, Paederia scandens, Clematis mandschurica and Campsis grandijlora showed good view in flowering period. 4. It was identified that auxiliary materials for inducing growth were needed in other plants except Parthenocissus tricuspidata, Parthenocissus quinquefolia. 5. It was identified that subsequent research about the auxiliary materials for inducing growth and adequate planting distance of each plants is needed for actual application.
