Objectives: The most commonly detected heavy metals in rocks and soils, including Pb, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn and As, are representative pollutants discharged from abandoned mines and have been listed as potential sources of contamination in drinking water. This study focused on increasing the removal efficiency of heavy metals from drinking water resources by surface modification of natural adsorbents to reduce potential health risks. Methods: Iron oxide coating and graft polymerization with zeolites and talc was conducted for bipolar surface modification to increase the combining capacity of heavy metals for their removal from water. The removal efficiency of heavy metals was measured before and after the surface modification. Results: The removal efficiency of Pb, Cu, and Cd by surface modified zeolite showed 100, 92, and 61.5%, respectively, increases compared to 64, 64, and 38% for non-modified zeolite. This implies that bipolar surface modified natural adsorbents have a good potential use in heavy metal removal. The more interesting finding is the removal increase for As, which has both cation and anion characteristics showing 27% removal efficiency where as non-modified zeolite showed only 2% removal. Conclusions: Zeolite is one of the most widely used adsorptive materials in water treatment processes and bipolar surface modification of zeolite increases its applicability in the removal of heavy metals, especially As.
Mesoporous silicas for heavy metals adsorption were prepared by co-condensation of surfactant as a template and Ludox HS-40 as a silica precursor. Various mesoporous silicas with the introduction of chelating ligands (mercaptopropyl and aminopropyl groups) were synthesized to remove heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. The surface modification was conducted with a co-condensation process using the sequential or simultaneous addition of mesoporous silica and high concentration of the organosilane(3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane). These materials have been characterized by elemental analysis, XRD, SEM and TEM analysis. Adsorbents synthesized with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane shows a high loading capacity for Hg(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and anion Cr(VI). Especially the one synthesized with a mercaptopropyl function has the highest adsorption capacity for Hg(II) and Cd(II).
This study has been performed to evaluate the possibility of utilizing stone powder sludges from stone quarry and manufacturing plant as adsorbents for heavy metals in industrial wastewater. The stone powder sludges from stone quarry (IS-01) have the most effective adsorption capacity (above 95% of initial concentrations) under the given experimental conditions of reaction times (Pb : 15 min, Cu : 2 hr, Zn : 48 hr), initial acidity of solution (pH>3) and dosage (sludge/liquid ratio : 0.02). The stone powder sludges from manufacturing plant (CW-01) show relatively high adsorption capacity (about 95% of initial concentrations) only for Pb with a reaction times of 12 hours, initial acidity of solution (pH>3) and dosage (sludge/liquid ratio : 0.02). The stone powder sludges (IS-01) from stone quarry having relatively excellent adsorption capacity under the given experimental conditions show their potential utilization as heavy metal adsorbents.

The adsorption of heavy metals in the waste water carried out on the various domestic clays and waste pottery. The effect of parameters such as pH, temperature, adsorption time and coexisting cations on the adsorption ability and characteristics were investigated to find out whether the clays could be used as adsorbents. Adsorption equilibrium was reached within 20 minutes on all the clays. The optimum pH was found to be above 5. When other cations such as Cu(II) or Zn(II) coexisted with Pb(II), the adsorption amount of Pb(II) decreased because of competing adsorption.
Yellow loess, Tidal plat sediment, and mud are blown to be high in adsorption though they have great distinction according to the ratio of clay minerals content and their kinds. Thus one of the samples for this study can be obtained by drying of Yellow loess, Tidal plat sediment, and the mud which is semifinished products that are from the progress of heat treatment and making homogeneity which can be found everywhere in our county. Another sample can be prepared by reducing pollutants with the adsorbent and by homing heavy metals of their on. With the samples, noxious heavy metals such as Pb, Cd, and essential trace elements such as Cu, Fe, Mn by each concentration is tested for adsorption according to pH, the kinds of adsorbents and the amount of injection. With the help of these steps, this study shows that the adsorbents, which are green, reducing the additional pollution and low in price, can be found. It also shows that the optimal condition for removing pollutants can be found and the basic materials for treating water can be offered. The results were as follows ; Yellow loess shows the rates of adsorption by more than 50% and Tidal plat sediment and Mud show it by more than 90%. Thus Tidal plat sediment and Mud are higher than Yellow loess the rates of adsorption. The pH should be treated in natural condition because the rates of adsorption of Pb, Cd, Cu, Mn excepting Fe in mud is higher in pH 7 than in pH 3 of Yellow loess, Tidal plat sediment, and Mud. The drying adsorbents are good to use because the rates of adsorption of heavy metals has tendency to be higher in the drying method than in the burning method. It is considered that the more the mont of the injection of the adsorbent is , the higher the rates of adsorption is, and one gram is reasonable for the amount of the injection of Tidal plat sediment and mud. Yellow loess is suitable for the treatment of the water that includes low concentration of heavy metals because it has the lower rate of adsorption as the concentration of noxious heavy metals is higher. It is thought that Tidal plat sediment and Mud is proper for the treatment of the water that includes high concentration of heavy metals because the rates of adsorption has not been changed as the concentration of heavy metals increases.
Polysaccharides are very effective adsorbents for heavy metals. In this study, the adsorption characteristics of various polysaccharides for heavy metal adsorption were investigated. Tested polysaccharides were homogeneous polysaccharides such as curdlan, chitin, starch, cellulose, Avicel, and Solka floc and heterogeneous polysaccharides such as zooglan, locust bean gum, ghatti gum, pectin, and xylan. Lead(II) adsoption characteristic on these polysaccharides followed Freundlich isotherm and the isotherm parameters were calculated. For adsorption of lead(ll), Avicel, starch, and zooglan were found to be good adsorbents.
Industrialization and modern developments have led to an influx of toxic heavy metals into the aquatic environment, and the accumulation of heavy metals has serious adverse effects on humans. Among the various heavy metal treatment methods, adsorption is very useful and frequently used. Plastic materials, such as polypropylene and polyethylene, have been widely used as filter media due to their mechanical and chemical stability. However, the surface of plastic material is inert and therefore the adsorption capability of heavy metals is very limited. In this study, granular media and fiber media composed of polypropylene and polyethylene are used, and the surface modification was conducted in order to increase adsorption capability toward heavy metals. Oxygen plasma generated hydroxyl groups on the surface of the media to activate the surface, and then acrylic acid was synthesized on the surface. The grafted carboxyl group was confirmed by FT-IR and SEM. Heavy metal adsorption capability of pristine and surface modified adsorbents was also evaluated. Overall, heavy metal adsorption capability was increased by surface modification due to electrostatic interaction between the carboxyl groups and heavy metal ions. Fibrous PP/PE showed lower improvement compared to granular PP media because pore blockage occurred by the surface modification step, thereby inhibiting mass transfer.
This study was performed to investigate the possible uses of waste sludge for the removal of heavy metal ions. The adsorption experiments were conducted with wastes such as sewage treatment sludge, water treatment sludge and oyster shell to evaluate their sorption characteristics. Heavy metals selected were cadmium, copper and lead. in the sorption experiments on the sewage treatment sludge, water treatment sludge, oyster shell and soil, sorption occurred in the beginning and it reached equilibrium after 40 minutes on the oyster shell and 4 hour on the sewage treatment sludge and water treatment sludge. Results of Freundlich isotherms indicated that sewage treatment sludge could be properly used as an adsorbent for heavy metals and sorption strength of heavy metals was in the order of Pb > Cu > Cd. In the influence of pH on the adsorbents, sorption rate was more than 80% in pH 4 and most of heavy metals were adsorbed in pH 9. Adsorption rate of Cd decreased with decreasing pH and then adsorption rate of Cu was lower in soil.
Heavy metal removal by using porous mineral adsorbents bears a great potential to decontaminate sludge compost, and natural zeolite (NZ), artificial zeolite (AZ), and expanded perlite (EP) seem to be possible candidates for this purpose. A composting experiment was conducted to compare the efficiency of those adsorbents for removal of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb) from sewage sludge compost with no adsorbent amendment. For this purpose, 10 g of NZ and AZ and 5 g of EP was filled in a small bag made from non-biodegradable synthetic textile and was separately mixed in composting piles. The bags were separated from compost samples at the end of the experiment. AZ and NZ exhibited different reduction potentials depending on the type of heavy metal. AZ significantly reduced Cr (43.7%), Mn (35.8%), and Fe (29.9%), while NZ more efficiently reduced Cu (24.5%), Ni (22.2%), Zn (22.1%), and Pb (21.2%). The removal efficiency of EP was smaller than both AZ and NZ. The results of this simultaneous composting and metal removing study suggest that AZ and NZ can efficiently bind metal during composting process.

In order to investigate a practical application of fibrous adsorbents to heavy metal ions, amidoxime fibers, as a particular class of solid chelate agents, were prepared by hydroxylamine treatment for acrylic fibers in a recipe of neutralization. Among the important problems from plant effluents are toxic concentrations of heavy metals such as copper. Accordingly, the properties of Cu (II) adsorption and its chelates were studied. The results obtained are as follows; The fibrous adsorbents have the property of increasing the swelling volumes by amidoximation. The adsorption of Cu (II) ion is characterized by an endothermic reaction, which is estimated as the plus values in the enthalpy change ($\delta$H=1.30 Kcal/mol. and 3.14 Kcal/mol.). The Cu (II) ions are adsorbed in the range of pH $3\~8$ and the maximum adsorptions are occurred about pH 8. Owing to the anions $(NO_3^-,\;Cl^-)$ of copper salts, amidoxime fibers form 1:1 and 2:1 (ligand: metal) chelating complexes with Cu (II). The nitrate anion chelates to amide I (NH) of amidoxime groups and the chlorine anion does to nitrosyl (NO). These effects relate to the crystallization of the complex and the thermal property.
