Evaluation on the suspended solids and heavy metals removal mechanisms in bioretention systems

  • Application of bioretention systems in Korea is highly considered due to its minimal space requirements, appropriateness as small landscape areas and good pollutant removal and peak hydraulic flow reduction efficiency. In this study, the efficiency of two lab-scale bioretention types having different physical properties, media configuration and planted with different shrubs and perennials was investigated in reducing heavy metal pollutants in stormwater runoff. Type A bioretention systems were planted with shrubs whereas type B were planted with perennials. Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum (A-CL) and Aquilegia flabellata var. pumila (A-AP) respectively were planted in each type A bioretention reactors while Rhododendron indicum linnaeus (B-RL) and Spiraea japonica (B-SJ), respectively were planted in each type B bioretention reactors. Results revealed that the four lab-scale bioretention reactors significantly reduced the influent total suspended load by about 89 to 94% (p<0.01). Type B-RL and B-SJ reactors reduced soluble Cr, Cu, Zn, and Pb by 28 to 45% that were 15 to 35% greater than the soluble metal reduction of type A-CL and A-AP reactors, respectively. Among the pollutants, total Cr attained the greatest discharged fraction of 0.52-0.81. Excluding the effect of soil media, total Pb attained the greatest retention fraction in the bioretention systems amounting to 0.15-0.34. Considering the least discharge fraction of heavy metal in the bioretention system, it was observed that the bioretention systems achieved effectual reduction in terms of total Cu, Zn and Pb. These findings were associated with the poor adsorption capacity of the soil used in each bioretention system. The results of this study may be used for estimating the maintenance requirements of bioretention systems.

LCA를 적용한 하천환경영향평가 방법 (A Method of River Environmental Impact Assessment using LCA)

  • In this research LCA methodology was adapted and analyzed in quantifying estimation of estuarine environment. The analysed objects of estuarine environment were construction methods, facility, and input material into water, and estuarine ecosystem. In this research the function of LCA of estuarine environment was river with the view of controling water, utilizing water, and hydrophilic function. According to the result of research, environmental damage indicator of facility was decreased 346 Pt from 453 Pt at pre-maintenance to 107 pt at post-maintenance. Among raw and subsidiary materials, remicon, stone-netting bag, and pebbles were showing heavy environmental load in the order. Evironmental impact of input material into water system was analyzed from 1,827 Pt environmental load before construction to 1,080 Pt of post-maintenance, and damage indicator was improved at 747 Pt. Water quality was improved from 1,827 Pt (before construction) to 1,080 Pt(after construction), and ecosystem was improved after maintenance. Environmental indicator in ecosystem was analyzed 427 Pt(before construction) to 348 Pt(after construction), and damage indicator of Sumnjingang riverine system was improved as much as 79 Pt. In the conclusion, estuarine environmental monitoring through LCA in the area of facility, input material into water and ecosystem showed that close-to-nature stream was 1,172 Pt better than artificial stream in environmental aspects.

Analysis of acoustic emission signals during fatigue testing of a M36 bolt using the Hilbert-Huang spectrum

  • One of the most important aspects in structural health monitoring is the detection of fatigue damage. Structural components such as heavy-duty bolts work under high dynamic loads, and thus are prone to accumulate fatigue damage and cracks may originate. Those heavy-duty bolts are used, for example, in wind power generation and mining equipment. Therefore, the investigation of new and more effective monitoring technologies attracts a great interest. In this study the acoustic emission (AE) technology was employed to detect incipient damage during fatigue testing of a M36 bolt. Initial results showed that the AE signals have a high level of background noise due to how the load is applied by the fatigue testing machine. Thus, an advanced signal processing method in the time-frequency domain, the Hilbert-Huang Spectrum (HHS), was applied to reveal AE components buried in background noise in form of high-frequency peaks that can be associated with damage progression. Accordingly, the main contribution of the present study is providing insights regarding the detection of incipient damage during fatigue testing using AE signals and providing recommendations for further research.

석탄 보일러에서 회분 부착성향 예측 접근 방법에 대한 고찰 (Consideration on the Prediction Approach of Ash Deposition Propensity in Coal-fired Boilers)

  • Various approaches have been proposed to predict the ash deposition (slagging and fouling) propensity of coal, which is essential in maintaining high efficiency and preventing corrosion/damage of a coal-fired boiler. The common method is to establish an index of the ash deposition propensity based on elementary coal composition and advanced characterization of ash properties, which is readily applicable to design, operation and maintenance of coal-fired boilers. Although many indexes have been developed for this purpose, their validity is still not satisfactory in actual applications to particular coal types or operating conditions. This paper reviews the status of predictive approaches for the ash deposition propensity, and assesses the performance of existing indexes by comparing the results for selected coals. This work will contribute to the development of a comprehensive and practical method for prediction of the ash deposition propensity.

롤러전압콘크리트 기층의 누적피로손상을 고려한 중하중 도로의 복합포장 두께 설계 (Thickness Design of Composite Pavement for Heavy-Duty Roads Considering Cumulative Fatigue Damage in Roller-Compacted Concrete Base)

  • 중하중의 교통하중은 포장체에 과도한 응력과 변형을 발생시키므로 이에 대응할 수 있는 포장 단면 설계가 중요하다. 항만 배후도로와 산업도로는 일반도로에 비해 중하중 교통의 비율이 높아 포장의 조기 파손으로 인한 문제가 다수 발생되고 있다. 국외의 경우 중차량의 통행이 많은 도로의 포장설계는 복합포장을 많이 적용하고 있다. 복합포장은 기존 포장의 설계수명을 2배 이상 증대시켜 보수비용 및 사용자 비용을 절감할 수 있는 경제적 포장 형식으로 인식되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 중하중 교통의 비율이 높은 산업도로와 항만 배후도로의 포장 장기 공용성을 확보할 수 있도록 롤러전압콘크리트 기층을 활용한 복합포장의 두께 설계 방안을 제안하고자 한다. 3차원 유한요소해석을 이용하여 포장의 재료물성 변화에 따른 역학적 거동과 장기 공용성을 검토하였으며, 계절별 컨테이너 트레일러에 의해 발생되는 롤러전압콘크리트 기층의 누적피로손상도을 고려하여 사용자가 쉽게 사용할 수 있는 카탈로그 설계를 제안하였다.

표면처리방법에 따른 강교용 일반중방식도장계의 열화진행수명 평가 (Evaluation of Deterioration Propagation Life of Steel Bridge Paints According to Surface Treatment Methods and Heavy-Duty Painting Types)

  • 본 연구에서는 강교량용 일반중방식 도장계열의 신설 도장계 및 재도장계의 내구수명 예측과 도막 열화곡선을 검토하기 위하여 표면처리방법과 도장 종류를 변수로 총 12종류의 도장 시험편에 대하여 실내 부식촉진시험을 실시하였다. 표면처리는 신설(공장도장)과 재도장(현장도장)에 따라 수공구 (SSPC SP-2), 동력공구 (SP-3), 블라스트 처리(SP-10)를 적용하였다. 도장 시험편은 ISO 20340 부식환경 조건에서 실시하였으며, 각 도장계별 열화곡선은 초기결함으로부터 발생된 부풂 및 녹 면적을 기준으로 평가되었다. 또한 대기 부식성 범주와 강재 내구 성능평가 기준을 이용하여 신설 및 보수 도장계의 내구수명을 실험적으로 평가하였다. 그 결과 표면처리 방법에 따른 신설 도장계와 재도장계의 내구수명을 정량적으로 평가하였으며, 대기부식성 등급 C4에서 일반중방식 신설 도장계의 내구수명은 18 ~ 21년, 재도장계는 5.3 ~ 8.0년으로 추정된다.

  • 방사성폐기물을 저장하는 시설은 부지선정에 상당한 어려움과 많은 시간이 소요되고 있으며, 이러한 문제로 인하여 발전소내의 부지에 방사성폐기물의 수용용량을 증가시키는 방법이 단기적인 해결방안으로 고려되고 있다. 캐나다에서 개발한 사용후 핵연료 건식저장시스템을 국내에 도입하려는 노력이 진행중이다. 본 연구에서는 유한요소해석을 통하여 사용후 핵연료 건식저장시스템의 비정상운영 조건인 사용후 핵연료 이송차량의 충돌사고와 핵연료를 운반하는 플라스크 낙하사고에 대한 구조적 안전성을 검토하였다.

  • This paper presented a case study on the application of on-line wear monitoring technique to a high duty air-turbo-compressor system. Main objects monitored were a gear unit and metal bearings, both shown frequent troubles due to the severe operation conditions at heavy dynamic load. The air-turbo-compressor system needs secure condition monitoring because it is one of the main utilities in steel making industry. Temperature and vibration characteristics have been mainly on-line monitored in this system for a predictive maintenance; however, it has been shown that they are not fairly good enough to give an early warning prior to the machine failure. In this work, an on-line Opto Magnetic Detector(OMD) was implemented for an on-line wear monitoring, which quantitatively measured the contamination level of both ferrous and non-ferrous wear particles by detecting the change in optical density of used oil. Results showed that the application of on-line OMD system was satisfactory in diagnosis of the machine system.

Modal parameters identification of heavy-haul railway RC bridges - experience acquired

  • Traditionally, it is not easy to carry out tests to identify modal parameters from existing railway bridges because of the testing conditions and complicated nature of civil structures. A six year (2007-2012) research program was conducted to monitor a group of 25 railway bridges. One of the tasks was to devise guidelines for identifying their modal parameters. This paper presents the experience acquired from such identification. The modal analysis of four representative bridges of this group is reported, which include B5, B15, B20 and B58A, crossing the Caraj$\acute{a}$s railway in northern Brazil using three different excitations sources: drop weight, free vibration after train passage, and ambient conditions. To extract the dynamic parameters from the recorded data, Stochastic Subspace Identification and Frequency Domain Decomposition methods were used. Finite-element models were constructed to facilitate the dynamic measurements. The results show good agreement between the measured and computed natural frequencies and mode shapes. The findings provide some guidelines on methods of excitation, record length of time, methods of modal analysis including the use of projected channel and harmonic detection, helping researchers and maintenance teams obtain good dynamic characteristics from measurement data.

국내 도로교량 바닥판 열화모델 제안 및 교체 수요 예측 (Proposal of Domestic Road Bridge Deck Deterioration Models and Forecast of Replacement Demand)

  • 교량 바닥판은 대형 차량 및 제설제와 같은 다양한 환경 요인으로 인해 급속히 악화되는 부재이다. 한국에 건설된 교량의 수명이 길어짐에 따라 교량 바닥판의 교체 수요가 증가 할 것으로 예상된다. 다른 국가에서는 프리 캐스트 바닥판을 이용한 급속 교량 건설 기술이 열화된 교량 바닥판의 교체 수요 대응을 위해 적극적으로 사용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 국내 교량 바닥판의 상태평가 데이터를 수집 및 분석하여 교량 바닥판 열화 모델을 제안 하였다. 또한 교량 규모의 관점에서 열화된 교량 바닥판의 미래 대체 수요를 예측하였다.
