  • As a result of climate change, the heatwave and urban heat island phenomena have become more common, and the frequency of heatwaves is expected to increase by two to six times by the year 2050. In particular, the heat sensation index felt by workers at construction sites during a heatwave is very high, and the sensation index becomes even higher if the urban heat island phenomenon is considered. The construction site environment and the situations of construction workers vulnerable to heat are not improving, and it is now imperative to respond effectively to reduce such damage. In this study, satellite imagery, land surface temperatures (LST), and long short-term memory (LSTM) were applied to analyze areas above 33 ℃, with the most vulnerable areas with increased synergistic damage from heat waves and the urban heat island phenomena then predicted. It is expected that the prediction results will ensure the safety of construction workers and will serve as the basis for a construction site early-warning system.

  • Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is an important environmental indicator that affects climate coupling systems around the world. In particular, coastal regions suffer from abnormal SST resulting in huge socio-economic damage. This study used Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and Convolutional Long Short Term Memory (ConvLSTM) to predict SST up to 7 days in the south sea region in South Korea. The results showed that the ConvLSTM model outperformed the LSTM model, resulting in a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.33℃ and a mean difference of -0.0098℃. Seasonal comparison also showed the superiority of ConvLSTM to LSTM for all seasons. However, in summer, the prediction accuracy for both models with all lead times dramatically decreased, resulting in RMSEs of 0.48℃ and 0.27℃ for LSTM and ConvLSTM, respectively. This study also examined the prediction of abnormally high SST based on three ocean heatwave categories (i.e., warning, caution, and attention) with the lead time from one to seven days for an ocean heatwave case in summer 2017. ConvLSTM was able to successfully predict ocean heatwave five days in advance.

  • According to a NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies report, temperatures have risen by approximately 1℃ so far, based on temperatures recorded in 1880. The 2003 heatwave in Europe affected approximately 35,000 people across Europe. In this study, a cooling fog, which is used in smart cities, was designed to efficiently reduce the temperature during a heatwave and its pilot test results were interpreted. A model experiment of the cooling fog was conducted using a chamber, in which nano mist spray instruments and spray nozzles were installed. The designed cooling fog chamber model showed a temperature reduction of up to 13.8℃ for artificial pavement and up to 8.0℃ for green surfaces. However, this model was limited by constant wind speed in the experiment. Moreover, if the cooling fog is used when the wind speed is more than 3m/s in the active green zone, the temperature reduction felt by humans is expected to be even greater. As a second study, the effect of cooling fog on temperature reduction was analyzed by installing a pilot test inside the Land Housing Institute (LHI). The data gathered in this research can be useful for the study of heat reduction techniques in urban areas.

  • Heat waves are not new, but due to climate change, the probability of occurrence and severity of heat waves increases, which results in more adverse impacts and damages on local community. Accordingly, the need to tackle heat waves in a more comprehensive and precautionary manner increases. Our study therefore lays emphasis on 1) a long-term plan which not only includes short-term plans in response to the observed damages, but also incorporates relevant sectors to deal with potential impacts in longer term perspective; and 2) a mechanism to manage and adjust the plan in a sustainable manner. In doing so, it examines the impacts of heatwaves and existing plans to tackle them. Based on that, two key conceptual frameworks, namely policy integration and adaptive management, are applied to provide strategies for the development and management of a long-term adapting heatwave plan addressing climate change.

  • Objectives: The objective of study was to calculate the municipal level environmental burden of disease (EBD) due to heat wave. Methods: The data used were Korea National Health Insurance 2011 claim data and 2011 death registry. Heatwave related diseases included hypertensive heart diseases, ischemic heart diseases, cerebrovascular disease, and heat related illness. According to the method that WHO proposed, the study computed population-attributable fraction with relative risk which come from previous study and proportion of exposure which the study calculated with historical meteorology data. Results: The Average of 251 municipal EBD was 2.11 per thousand persons. The value of years lost due to disability was 11 times higher than that of years of life lost. On average EBD of county and southern geographical areas tended to be higher than those of District or city areas. The relationship between municipal deprivation index (composite deprivation index) and EBD showed the positive association, which means that the worse deprived municipal is, the higher EBD takes. Conclusions: Climate change is getting one of the major risk factors of cardio-cerebrovascular disease, which is the second leading cause of death. The study results suggested the urgent policy planning and reaction of climate change adaptation.

  • Outdoor sports activities have been restricted by serious air pollution, such as fine dust and yellow dust, and abnormal meteorological change, such as heatwave and heavy snow. These environmental problems have rapidly increased the demand for indoor sports activities. Virtual sports, such as virtual golf, virtual baseball, virtual soccer, etc., allow playing various sports games without going outdoors. Indoor sports industries and markets have seen rapid growth since the advent of virtual sports. Most virtual sports platforms use screen-based virtual reality techniques, which are why they are called screen sports. However, these platforms cannot support various sports games, especially virtual match games, such as squash, boxing, and so on, because existing screen-based virtual reality sports techniques use real balls and players. This article presents screen-based haptic-augmented reality technologies for a new virtual sports platform. The new platform does not use real balls and players to solve the limitations of previous platforms. Here, various technologies, including human motion tracking, human action recognition, haptic feedback, screen-based augmented-reality systems, and augmented-reality sports content, are unified for the new virtual sports platform. From these haptic-augmented reality technologies, the proposed platform supports sports games, including indoor virtual matches, that existing virtual sports platforms cannot support.
