It is difficult to apply a conventional selection guide for diffusers when the diffuser is installed in a perimeter zone, because the ADPI(Air Diffusion Performance Index) vs. T/L(Throw/Length) curve listed in conventional guide does not consider the perimetric heating load. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of the perimetric heating load on the ADPI and to propose a selection guide for proper diffuser when perimetric heating load exists. The velocity and temperature distributions and the ADPI value are obtained numerically with various heat load ratios and air flow rates. The ADPI values by numerical result were compared with existing experimental data to verify the method for evaluation of ADPI proposed in present study. In case of a high side wall diffuser, the ADPI decreased with increases of the flow rate on every heat load ratio of present study except 0.75. Also, the ADPI vs. T/L curves have been proposed for the heat load ratios of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 to guarantee comport thermal environment when diffusers are installed in perimeter zone.
Experimental investigations have been made to study the double-diffusive nature of convection of an initially stratified salt-water solution due to heating from below in a rotating cylindrical cavity. The objective is to examine the flow phenomena and the heat transfer characteristics according to the changes in temperature gradient, concentration gradient and rotating velocity of cavity. Thermal and solutal boundary conditions at side wall are adiabatic and impermeable, respectively. The top and bottom plate are maintained each at constant temperature and concentration. The cavity is put into a state of solid body rotation. Like the stationary case, the types of initially-formed flow pattern are classified into three regimes depending on the effective Rayleigh number and Taylor number; stagnant flow regime, single mixed-layer flow regime and successively formed multi-mixed layer flow regime. At the same effective Rayleigh number, the number of initially-formed mixed layer and its growth rate decrease as the effect of rotation increases. The temperature and concentration profiles are both uniform in each layer due to convective mixing in the layered-flow regime, but look both liner in stagnant flow regime and single mixed-layer flow regime. At the interface between adjacent layers, the temperature changes smoothly but the concentration changes rapidly.
Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of strongly-heated air flows moving upward in a vertical tube has been conducted to investigate the effect of gas property variations on turbulence modification. Three heating conditions(q$_1$$^{+}$=0.0045, 0.0035 and 0.0018) are selected to reflect the experiment of Shehata and McEligot (1998) at the inlet bulk Reynolds numbers of 4300 and 6000. At these conditions, the flow inside the heated tube remains turbululent or undergoes a transition to subturbulent or laminarizing flow. Consequently, a significant impairment of heat transfer occurs due to the reduction of flow turbulence. The predictions of integral parameters and mean profiles such as velocity and temperature distributions are in excellent agreement with the experiment. The computed turbulence data indicate that a reduction of flow turbulence occurs mainly due to strong flow acceleration effects for strongly-heated internal gas flows. Thus, buoyancy influences are secondary but not negligible especially for turbulent flow at low heating condition. Digital flow visualization also shows that vortical structures rapidly decay as the heating increases.s.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the enhancement of heat transfer without additional external power in the case of rectangular air jet impinging vertically on the flat heating surface. In an attempt to enhance the heat transfer rate in two-dimensional impinging jet, the technique used in the present study was placement of square rod bundles as a turbluence promoter in front of the heat transfer surface. The effects of the clearance between the flat plate and square rod, and the nozzle exit velocity on the heat transfer characteristics have been investigated experimentally. The results obtained through this study were summerized as follows. High heat transfer enhancement was achived by means of flow acceleration and thinning of boundary layer by inserting rods in front of the heating flat plate. The smaller the clearance between rod and heating plate was, the larger heat transfer effect became. Average Nusselt number reached maximum at $Re=5.76{\times}10^4$ and C=1㎜ and the enhancement rate of heat transfer became maxium at this condition with the enhancement ratio as high as about 1.427 when normalized by the flat plate value. The correlating equation of average Nusselt number and Reynolds number was obtained, which is $\bar{N}uo=1.324{\cdot}Re^{0.459}{\cdot}(C/A)^{-0.034}$.

In the present paper, we study the entropy analysis of boundary layer flow over a slender stretching sheet under the action of a non uniform magnetic field that is acting perpendicular to the flow direction. The effects of viscous dissipation and Joule heating are included in the energy equation. Using similarity transformation technique the momentum and thermal boundary layer equations to a system of nonlinear differential equations. Numerical solutions are obtained using the shooting and fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The expressions for the entropy generation number and Bejan number are also obtained using a suggested similarity transformation. The main objective of this article is to investigate the effects of different governing parameters such as the magnetic parameter ($M^2$), Prandtl number (Pr), Eckert number (Ec), velocity index parameter (m), wall thickness parameter (${\alpha}$), temperature difference parameter (${\Omega}$), entropy generation number (Ns) and Bejan number (Be). All these effects are portrayed graphically and discussed in detail. The analysis reveals that entropy generation reduces with decreasing wall thickness parameter and increasing temperature difference between the stretching sheet and the fluid outside the boundary layer. The viscous and magnetic irreversibilities are dominant in the vicinity of the stretching surface.
A study on in-mold punching technology for hole piercing during molding of hollow plastic parts was conducted. Considering the non-linearity of the HDPE plastic material, mechanical properties were obtained according to the change in temperature and load speed. A standard specimen for the in-mold punching test was designed to implement the in-mold punching process, and the specimen was obtained through injection molding. In order to analyze the influence of process variables during in-mold punching, an in-mold punching mold capable of controlling variables such as temperature and support pressure of the specimen was designed and manufactured. Mold heating characteristics were confirmed through finite element analysis, and punching simulations for changes in process conditions were performed to analyze punching characteristics and reflected in the experiment. Through simulations and experiments, it was found that the heating temperature, punch shape, punching speed, and pressure of the back side of the specimen were very important during in-mold punching of HDPE materials, and optimal conditions were acquired within a given range.
An experimental study for the two types of burners used in the non-oxidizing direct fired furnaces of the heat treatment process for the cold rolled plate has been carried out to investigate the combustion characteristics and the oxidization of the surface of steel plate. A steep temperature gradient and entrainment of residual oxygen were found near the heating surface in the flame of the nozzle mixing burner which has strong swirl velocity component. It was concluded that the elimination of the residual oxygen and the increase of the temperature of combustion gas on the heating surface are needed to enhance the performance of the burners for application to the non-oxidizing direct fired furnaces.
The transfer of air pollutants between passenger room and service room in train are investigated by the computational analysis. The effects of service room temperature, inlet velocity, initial concentration and heating are studied. The flow induced by the difference of density between two rooms is found to take the major role in transfer of polluted air. Low temperature of service room enhances the polluted air flow into passenger room along the floor. Exhaust fan above the door between two rooms is not effective for this case. Strong inlet flow is found to suppress polluted air flow from service room. The heating of passenger room can promote air pollution.
In a residential complex case, the efficiency of land use are maximized, but a variation of external condition such as load in-equality, the increase in wind velocity and solar radiation by a height causes increasing energy in a building. Besides, because of increasing window size for a lighting and a view, it comes heating load in winter and cooling load in summer. A choice of cooling-system is important for this reason. Recently an internal high-rise residential complex installs an air-cooling system and operates individual heating. However, this study applies water-cooling used one public cooling-tower instead of an air-cooling system, also with an efficiency test of an air and a water-cooling system, consider an internal applicability.
The boundary layer of a two-dimensional forced convective flow along a persistent moving horizontal needle in an electrically conducting magnetohydrodynamic dissipative nanofluid was numerically investigated. The energy equation was constructed with Joule heating, viscous dissipation, uneven heat source/sink, and thermal radiation effects. We analyzed the boundary layer behavior of a continuously moving needle in Blasius (moving fluid) and Sakiadis (quiescent fluid) flows. We considered Cu nanoparticles embedded in methanol. The reduced system of governing Partial differential equations (PDEs) was solved by employing the Runge-Kutta-based shooting process. Computational outcomes of the rate of heat transfer and friction factors were tabulated and discussed. Velocity and temperature descriptions were examined with the assistance of graphical illustrations. Increasing the needle size did not have a significant influence on the Blasius flow. The heat transfer rate in the Sakiadis flow was high compared with that in the Blasius flow.
