  • Numerical analysis of aerodynamic heating for KPSAM is performed using aerodynamic heating model suitable to KPSAM, which has complex flow field resulting from the spike attached to the dome, such as large separation area and the strong shock/boundary layer interaction region around reattachment point on the dome. The aerodynamic heating model is validated and modified through the comparison between the flight test measurement and the thermal analysis results. TFD temperature sensors are installed on the dome to measure surface temperature during the flight. Computation results, obtained from the heat transfer analysis on the sensors, agree well with flight test data. The aerodynamic heating model provides heat transfer rate into surface as a boundary condition of unsteady 1D/axisymmetric thermal analysis on the missile structure. The axisymmetric thermal analysis using FLUENT is more versatile than the 1D analysis and can be applied to the heating problem related with complex structures and multi-dimensional heat transfer problems such as prediction of temperature rise at contact surface of different materials.

  • By describing the floor slab of a radiant heating system as a one dimensional transient heat exchanger problem, a dynamic analysis model to incorperate with TRNSYS program was developed and their results were compared with experimental results. Results showed that the both of TPOC(Two Parameter On-off Control) and TPSC(Two Parameter Switching Control) method using room air temperature and floor surface temperature as the control parameters does not maintain room air and floor surface temperature exactly at the setting temperatures. But TPSC method is a better candidate for the temperature regulations of room air and floor surface temperature than TPOC method which can keep on the upper and lower limit temperature according to outside temeperature and wall structure etc. And better thermal circumstance can be given by TPSC method than On-off and TPOC method and the overheating which can be occured at the radiant floor heating system with on-off heating control will be reduced.

  • Adsorption of toluene by activated carbon fiber (ACF) coated with dielectric heating element and desorption by applying microwave were investigated. In order to prepare adsorbent so that VOC can be desorbed by microwave heating, fine dielectric heating element with nano size was coated on the surface of the ACF using hybrid binder. Eight adsorbents (ACF-DHE, Activated Carbon Fiber coated with Dielectric Heating Element) were prepared with different amount of dielectric heating element, kinds of hybrid binder, and solvent. In order to investigate adsorption characteristics, BET surface area, pore volume, and average pore size were measured for each adsorbent including ACF. Breakthrough experiments with toluene concentration, flow rate, bed length using fixed bed reactor were performed to investigate adsorbality of adsorbent, and results were compared with that of the ACF. Desorption reactor was constructed with modified microwave oven to investigate heating effect on ACF-DHE by applying microwave power. Each adsorbent saturated with toluene were put into desorption reactor. Composition of desorbed gas generated by applying controlled microwave power to reactor was measured. Up to now, hot air desorption method has been used. Experimental results showed that desorption method with new adsorbent prepared by coating dielectric heating element on ACF can be used for industrial application.

  • Rapid mold heating has been recent issue to enable the injection molding of thin-walled parts or micro/nano structures. High-frequency induction is an efficient way to heat mold surface by electromagnetic induction in a non-contact manner, and has been recently applied to the injection molding due to its capability of rapid heating and cooling of mold surface. The present study covers a three-dimensional finite element analysis to investigate heating efficiency and structural safety of the induction heating process of an injection mold. To simulate the induction heating process, an integrated simulation method is proposed by effectively connecting an electromagnetic field analysis, a transient heat transfer analysis and a thermal stress analysis. The estimated temperature changes are compared with experimental measurements for various types of induction coil, from which heating efficiency according to the coil shape is discussed. The resulting thermal stress distributions of the mold plate for various types of induction coils are also evaluated and discussed in terms of the structural safety.

  • Digital variable structure controller(DVSC) is implemented to control the temperature for the hot water heating circulating pump control system. For the DVSC, a control algorithm is suggested, which using a nonlinear sliding surface and a PID sliding surface outside and inside of steady state error boundary layer, respectively. Smith predictor algorithm is used for the compensation of long dead time. The DVSC of the suggested algorithm yields improved control performance compared with the one of existing algorithm. The system responses with the suggested DVSC shows good responses without overshoot and steady state error inspite of heating load change. By decreasing sampling time, dead time and rise time are increasing, and system output noise by flow dynamics is amplified.

  • In this work, phenolic resins containing conductive carbon fillers, such as, petroleum coke, carbon black, and graphite, were used to improve the surface heating elements by impregnating a pitch-based carbon paper. The influence of conductive carbon fillers on physicochemical properties of the carbon paper was investigated through electrical resistance measurement and thermal analysis. As a result, the surface resistance and interfacial contact resistivity of the carbon paper were decreased linearly by impregnating the carbon fillers with phenol resins. The increase of carbon filler contents led to the improvement of electrical and thermal conductivity of the carbon paper. Also, the heating characteristics of the surface heating element were examined through the applied voltage of 1~5 V. With the applied voltage, it was confirmed that the surface heating element exhibited a maximum heating characteristic of about $125.01^{\circ}C$(5 V). These results were attributed to the formation of electrical networks by filled micropore between the carbon fibers, which led to the improvement of electrical and thermal properties of the carbon paper.

  • In the present study, an evaluation technology for heating channel layout was investigated in SMC molding system design. Conventional design rules of cooling channel in injection molding process were applied to the present work. Finite element thermal analysis with ANSYSTM was performed to evaluate the temperature distribution of mold surface. SMC mold was manufactured to test the effect of a proposed heating channel layout system on the temperature distribution of mold surface and infrared camera was applied to a measurement of temperature. It was shown that infrared camera application was possible in a measurement of temperature distribution on mold surface.

  • In this paper, a mold temperature control method for injection molding is proposed. The inner surface of mold is locally heated by jet impingement to improve pattern transcription. Heating by hot jet is completed while the mold is open. An experimental system that realizes the proposed idea has been built, which includes mold, nozzle assembly and heater. Actual injection molding process including the proposed heating procedure has been conducted to verify the validity of the method. The process has been done for several conditions with different jet temperatures and duration of heating. The results from different conditions are compared.

  • The radiation heat-transfer coefficient is generally used to calculate radiant heat exchange of heating space. The coefficient is evenly adopted in most cases, but it is not correct in actual cases. The purpose of this paper is to grasp the changing aspect of radiation heat-transfer coefficient needed for heating load calculation of radiant heating space. Surface temperatures are measured in an Ondol space, and the coefficients are derived and examined. Gebhart's Absorption Factor Method is used for the calculations of the rates of instantaneous radiant exchange in the room. As the result, it is confirmed that the coefficients are variant according to surface temperatures, and proper coefficients are needed for each of conditions.

  • Heat transfer phenomena during melting process of the phase change material (ice) was studied by numerical analysis and experiments. In a horizontal ice storage tube, the natural convection caused an increase in melting rate. However, the reduction of the heating surface area caused a decrease in melting rate. Therefore, during the melting process of ice in a horizontal cylinder, the reduction of the heating surface area should be considered. Under the same heating wall and initial water temperature condition, the melting rate became higher for $V_s/V_tot/=0.545 \;than \;that\; for\; V_s/V_tot$/=1.00 due to the difference in the reduction of heating surface area. A modified melting model considering the equivalent thermal conductivity of liquid phase and volume reduction was proposed. The results of the model were compared with the measured values and found to be in good agreement.
