청소년 흡연자의 전자담배 사용 빈도와 흡연 관련 특성 간의 연관성 (Associations between the Frequency of Electronic Cigarette Use and Smoking-related Characteristics among Adolescent Smokers)

  • Purpose: We aimed to identify associations between the frequency of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use and smoking-related characteristics among adolescent smokers. Methods: We used data from the 14th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The participants were 3,722 smokers who had smoked cigarettes on at least one day during the past 30 days. The frequency of e-cigarette use was defined as the number of days that participants used e-cigarettes during the past 30 days, and was divided into four categories: 0, 1~2, 3~9, and ${\geq}10$ days. We used the $x^2$ test and multinomial logistic regression to examine the associations between the frequency of e-cigarette use and smoking-related characteristics. Results: Those who attempted to quit smoking, had used a heated tobacco product (HTP) at least once, or initiated e-cigarette use before middle school were more likely to use e-cigarettes for 3~9 days in the past 30 days. More frequent e-cigarette use (${\geq}10$ days) was associated with a higher frequency and greater amount of cigarette use, lifetime HTP use, and earlier initiation of e-cigarette use. Conclusion: Smoking-related characteristics differed by the frequency of e-cigarette use. Therefore, intervention programs targeting adolescent smokers should consider differences in smoking-related characteristics based on the frequency of e-cigarette use.

청소년의 액상형 전자담배 흡연과 알레르기비염과의 관계에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Relationship between Liquid Electronic Cigarette Use and Allergic Rhinitis in South Korean Adolescents)

  • Background: The prevalence of allergic rhinitis in South Korean adolescents is increasing. Adolescents in South Korea currently use liquid electronic cigarettes more than heated tobacco products. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the association between the use of liquid electronic cigarettes and allergic rhinitis diagnoses among South Korean adolescents. Methods: This study used data from the 17th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey in 2021. Out of a total of 59,066 students, data from 18,869 students who had experience with liquid electronic cigarettes were used in the final analyses. Diagnoses of allergic rhinitis by medical doctors were self-reported as outcome variables. Results: For females, when comparing 'daily users' and 'current users' with 'never users', the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for 'allergic rhinitis' were 2.20 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.00~4.84) and 1.49 (95% CI, 1.07~2.09), respectively. For males, when comparing 'daily users' and 'current users' with 'never users', the adjusted ORs for 'allergic rhinitis' were 1.42 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.91~2.22) and 1.41 (95% CI, 1.08~1.84), respectively. Conclusions: The use of liquid electronic cigarettes was statistically significantly associated with increased odds of allergic rhinitis, especially for females. The results of this study will provide a useful scientific basis for establishing public health policy and using the educational data related to the use of liquid electronic cigarettes in the future.

Tobacco mitochondrial small heat shock protein NtHSP24.6 adopts a dimeric configuration and has a broad range of substrates

  • There is a broad range of different small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) that have diverse structural and functional characteristics. To better understand the functional role of mitochondrial sHSP, NtHSP24.6 was expressed in Escherichia coli with a hexahistidine tag and purified. The protein was analyzed by non-denaturing PAGE, chemical cross-linking and size exclusion chromatography and the $H_6NtHSP24.6$ protein was found to form a dimer in solution. The in vitro functional analysis of $H_6NtHSP24.6$ using firefly luciferase and citrate synthase demonstrated that this protein displays typical molecular chaperone activity. When cell lysates of E. coli were heated after the addition of $H_6NtHSP24.6$, a broad range of proteins from 10 to 160 kD in size remained in the soluble state. These results suggest that NtHSP24.6 forms a dimer and can function as a molecular chaperone to protect a diverse range of proteins from thermal aggregation.

고려인삼에 있어서의 페놀 산화효소의 항산화물질 (PHENOLOXIDASE AND ANTIOXIDANT IN KOREAN GINSENG)

  • Enzymatic browning is considered desirable in tea and tobacco processing but undesirable in many fruits processing at the present time. It is necessary to understand the nature of the enzyme, phenoloxidase, in order to control browning reactions, and extend its effects to formation of browning products as antioxidants in ginseng. Ginseng exhibits antioxidant activity when incorporated with turkey dark meat patties. The activity in red ginseng showed about two times stronger than white ginseng. One of the phenolic antioxidants from fresh, white and reprocessed white ginseng was identified as phenol 2.6 Bis(1.1 dimethyl ethyl) 4-methyl among several unknown compounds by GC/mass spectrometer. In red ginseng, no phenol 2.6 Bis (1.1 dimethyl ethyl) 4-methyl was detected, the compound may be polymerized by phenoloxidase and form some higher molecular compounds which may possess high antioxidant activity. Phenoloxidase isozymes in fresh Korean ginseng (panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) were extracted with phosphate buffer at pH 7.3. The isozymes were purified through ammonium sulfate fractionation, dialysis and chromatography on a DEAE-cellulose column. Two groups of phenoloxidase were shown to be present, one in the floating agglomerated group and the other in the precipitate. group from the 0.85 saturation ammonium sulfate. The DEAE-cellulose column chromatography, the phenoloxidase isozyme present in the precipitate appears as the first peak (I), and that in the agglomerate in the second peak (II). Isozyme I showed higher activity with catechin and catechal, and isozyme II showed higher activity with p-cresol. The isozyme showed two optimum pH activity one at pH 4.5 and the other at 8.5 with catechin as substrate. Korean ginseng phenoloxidase has high heat stability. When heated at $75^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, its activity remained $90\%\;and\;80\%$ on phenoloxidase I and II respectively. Phenoloxidase I was most active on (+) catechin followed by p-cresal, catechol and epicatechin. Phenoloxidase II was most active on p-cresal followed by (+) catechin, catechol, p-coumanic acid and epicatechin. Sodium bisulfite, sodium cyanide, ascorbic acid glutachion in the oxidized form, sodium diethyl dithiocarbomate and ethylendiamine tetra acetate (EDTA) acted as inhibitors. Red ginseng color development was initiated by phenoloxidase and finished by a followed sun drying process. The antiaging activity of ginseng may be initiated by the antioxidant in the ginseng.

쑥의 건조방법(乾燥方法)에 따른 지방산(脂肪酸) 변화(變化)에 관하여 (Changes in Compositions of Fatty Acids According to Drying Methods of Mugwort (Artemisia asiatica Nakai))

  • 생쑥의 건조방법에 따른 지방산 변화를 검토하기 위하여 강화도산 생쑥을 양건(陽乾), 음건(陰乾), 열풍건조(熱風乾燥) 및 냉동건조(冷凍乾燥)시켜 ethyl ether extract함량과 그 구성 지방산의 함량 변화를 조사하였다. 1. Ethyl ether extract의 함량은 냉동건조(冷凍乾燥)된 쑥이 5.68%로 가장 높았고 열풍건조(熱風乾燥)된 쑥이 2.45%로 가장 낮았다. 2. GLC에 의한 지방산 분석 결과 11종의 지방산 중 주된 지방산은 필수 지방산인 linoleic acid와 linolenic acid외에 palmitic acid가 다량 함유되어 식품 영양학적인 면에서 고무적인 것으로 사료된다. 3. 건조 방법에 따른 건조쑥의 지방산의 종류에는 차이가 없었으나 그 조성은 상이하였다. 즉 냉동건조(冷凍乾燥)된 쑥은 산화(酸化)되기 쉬운 고도(高度) 불포화지방산(不飽和脂肪酸)$(C_{18:2}+C_{18:3})$의 함량이 높을 뿐만 아니라 저비점지방산(低沸點脂肪酸)들의 감소가 가장 적었다. 한편 열풍건조(熱風乾燥)된 쑥은 저비점지방산(低沸點脂肪酸)들이 상당량 감소되었으나 고도(高度) 불포화지방산(不飽和脂肪酸)은 음건(陰乾) 및 양건(陽乾)시킨 쑥보다 다소 안정하였으며 양건(陽乾)시킨 쑥의 변화가 가장 현저하였다.

농산부산물(農産副産物)을 이용(利用)한 식용(食用)버섯 재배(栽培) (Mushroom Production Technology with Crop Residues)

  • 양송이 재배(栽培)에 있에서 볏짚을 주재료(主材料)로 사용(使用)할때의 퇴비재료(堆肥材料)의 배합(配合), 야외퇴적(野外堆積) 및 후발효(後醱酵)에 관(關)한 시험(試驗)과 볏짚을 이용(利用)한 느타리버섯 재배(栽培)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究)를 수행(遂行)한 바 그 결과(結果)를 요약(要約)하변 다음과 같다. 가) 합성퇴비배지(合成堆肥培地)의 탄소원(炭素源)으로서 볏짚은 보리짚과 밀짚보다 발효(醱酵)가 신속(迅速)하고 퇴비(堆肥)의 전질소함량(全窒素含量)이 높으며, 배지(培地)의 질(質)이 양호(良好)하여 양송이 자실체수량(子實體收量)이 현저(顯著)히 높았다. 나) 보리짚퇴비(堆肥)는 볏짚퇴비(堆肥)보다 생산성(生産性)이 낮으나 보리짚과 볏짚을 50:50으로 혼합(混合)하면 볏짚과 대등(對等)한 수량(收量)을 얻을 수 있었다. 다) 퇴비배지(堆肥培地)의 전유기태질소(全有機態窒素)와 자실체수량간(子實體收量間)에는 정(正)의 상관(相關)이 있으나 암모니아태질소(態窒素)와는 균사생장(菌絲生長) 및 자실체수량(子實體收量)에 부(負)의 상관(相關)이 있었다. 라) 볏짚을 주재료(主材料)로 사용(使用)할때 무기태질소원(無機態窒素源)으로서 요소(尿素)가 가장 좋았고 유안(硫安)과 석회질소(石灰窒素)는 부적당(不適當)하였다. 요소(尿素)는 3회(回) 분시(分施)할때 손실(損失)이 감소(減少)되었고, 퇴비(堆肥)의 질소함량(窒素含量)이 증가(增加)하였다. 마) 유기태영양원중(有機態營養源中) 들깨묵, 참깨묵, 밀기울, 계분등(鷄糞等)의 첨가(添加)는 퇴비(堆肥)의 발효(醱酵)를 양호(良好)하게 하고 자실체수량(子實體收量)을 증가(增加)시켰다. 바) 양송이 볏짚퇴비(堆肥)를 제조(製造)할때 터널기계화(機械化)하므로 수량(收量)이 13 % 증수(增收)되었고,생산비(生産費)가 34 % 절감(節減)되었다. 사) 볏짚과 밀짚을 이용(利用)하여 느타리버섯 재배(栽培)가 가능(可能)하고 자실체수량(子實體收量)을 뱃짚구(區)에서 높았다. 아) 느타리버섯 볏짚배지(培地)를 $60^{\circ}C$로 6시간(時間) 열처리(熱處理)하므로서 균사생장(菌絲生長)이 양호(良好)하였고 자실체수량(子實體收量)이 높았다.
